Grand National victory, seen can go as fast as you want to at this place." The victory was Rutherford's first of the season on the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) circuit. Rutherford's McLaren team is one of the six CART teams told by the rival United States Auto Club that their entries had been refused for the May 27 Indianapolis 500.

And Rutherford said, "If Team McLaren doesn't to Indianapolis, then I'm not going either." After a caution period ended with 14 laps to go in the first race, Kunzman, in a Parnelli-Cosworth, jumped out front, but Rutherford closed on him and, with eight laps to go, the two began a six-lap duel. Rutherford won $23,978 and his average speeds, 157.758 mph in the first race and 166.259 mph in the second, were records at the track, a high-banked, 1.522-mile oval designed for stock car racing. He qualified on the pole at 201.693 mph for the first race and that victory gave him the pole for the second go-around. In four championship car starts here since 1965, Rutherford has three victories and a second place. His first career victory in championship car racing came here in 1965.

"You might say I like this place," Rutherford said. "This is a track drivers like if you like to go fast. You N. J5 TT ONE WAY IT II YY while Baker and leading and trying to put the fourth-place Waltrip a lap down. Both cars were able to continue without serious damage.

Waltrip, the pole position starter, rallied for third when James Hylton's surprisingly strong bid fell just five miles short due to a failing differential. Bobby Allison was fourth, penalized one lap while leading the 170th lap for passing the pace car on pit road earlier. Joe Millikan was fifth, followed by the disappointed Hylton. Petty led most of the race. Other leaders were Baker, Waltrip, Allison and Hylton.

Waltrip, who lost a lap early in the race while his crew tried to sort out the chassis on his new car, led the first 50 laps. Petty then went in front and traded the lead with Baker most of the rest of the race. Petty averaged a record 80.207 mph, and collected $26,700 for his 187th career Sale Colonial I'ine LampTable XhrC7Wart Tuniiturc Qallefies il MARTINSVILLE, Va. "Boy, this was a tough deal," Petty said wearily as he sat in his car in Victory Circle.

The 41-year-old Petty was administered oxygen by the Martinsville-Henry County Rescue Squad before he finished the post-race ceremonies. Refreshed, Petty continued, "I think it's been since 1975 that we won a race on a short track. That's a long time for us up here especially since we used to win here fairly consistently. "The car got loose early in the race, but then the crew was able to put some more wedge in the chassis, and we could run good after that." It was Petty's 15th victory at the Martinsville Speedway and his second on the circuit in nine starts this season. (AP) -Johnny Rutherford outdueled Lee Kunzman and outlasted Al Unser yesterday to become the first driver to sweep a championship car doubleheader, winning both 125 mile races of the $126,000 Gould Twin Dixie at Atlanta International Raceway. Rutherford, of Fort Worth, edged his McLaren-Cosworth past Kunzman with two laps to go in the first "race and won by eight-tenths of a second.
