It was started some 18 months ago by a clutch of women who thought a garden club would be a great addition to the town.

Among them was Sandee Steckbeck, formerly president of the Bernardsville Garden Club, and president now of the Allen-hurst club. The other officers are Peggy DeMasi, first vice president; Pari Harrison, second vice president; Kathy Tomaino, treasurer; Sandra Sowis, recording secretary, and Cleo Boiko, corresponding secretary. They're all of Allenhurst with the exception of DeMasi, Ocean Township. Allenhurst Garden Club is now a member of the Garden Club of New Jersey and the membership has grown to 34. They meet once a month in a member's home and, in conjunction with the Allenhurst centennial now under way, have plans afoot (you'll pardon the expression) for a Porch and Garden Walk to take place from 1 to 5 p.m.

July 11, for which tickets are $8. The tour will feature nine homes, each decorated on a summer holiday theme, and St. Andrew's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, corner of Elberon and Norwood Avenues, which opened last Sunday for summer services. There will be a boutique at one of the tour homes that of Ivis Rachmelowitz and tea and dessert will be served all afternoon on Madeline Cumis-key's Victorian porch. Boiko, (732) 531-2505, and Lynn Gilman, (732) 531-1451, are chairing the tour and may be contacted for information or reservations.

Tickets will also be sold on tour day at the town's gazebo across from the Allenhurst train station. That's where, maps showing tour and colors. All that is required is to show the industry that you have paid your dues and have taken the time to train in the art. We offer professional acting workshops for beginners and advanced students. Funds for the projects came from the Borough of Allenhurst and the Property Owners Group as well as from fall sales of flower bulbs.
