413 OCEAN MARTHA SEARLES, 71, LAKEWOOD, died yesterday at home. She was a homemaker and a communicant of St. Dominic's Roman Catholic Church, Brick. Born in Brooklyn, she lived in Flemington before moving to Lakewood five years ago. Surviving are her husband, Raymond C.

Searles; three daughters, Mary Ann Clark of Sanatoga, Kristian Patron of Skillman, and Kerry Phillips of Coral Springs, a son, Raymond C. Searles Jr. of Limerick, two brothers, Richard A. McAuley Sr. of Dunellen, and Archibald McAuley of Green Brook; three sisters, Mary Coffin of Palm Beach, Veronica Honecker of Brick, and Joan McAuley of West Palm Beach, and four grandchildren.

She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Fort Myers, and a life member of Union Church, Seaside Park. Formerly of Seaside Park, she lived in Fort Myers since 1983. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis H. Sprague in 1990; and a son, Francis Sprague Jr. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, James L.

and Beverly Sprague of Seaside Park, and John R. and Judy Sprague of Stuart, three daughters and a sonin-law, Kathryn Smith of Fort Myers, Doris Virgilio of Piscataway, and Agnes and William Polhemus of Seaside Park; a sister-in-law, Joyce Sprague of Fort Myers; 23 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. He attained the rank of lance corporal. He was employed at Tingley Rubber, South Plainfield, for the past nine years. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Keyport, and Knights of Columbus. He this a loving, devoted husband and father and a guiding light to his siblings.

Born in Jersey City, he lived in South Brunswick before moving to Keyport in 1986. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Rose. Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Joan Mary; a son and daughterin-law, Kenneth Jr. and Donna of Old Bridge; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleene and Fred Castellano of Atlantic Highlands; five brothers and four sisters-in-law, Robert of Flemington, George and Kim, John and Marie, and Russell and Tracy, all of Middletown, and Gary and Michelle of Brick; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Elaine and Ted Gillett of Tampa, Maryanne Slovitsky, Joanne and Dennis Williams, all of Atlantic Highlands, and Jill and Kevin Karnes of New Smyrna Beach, several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends. He was a clerk in the maintenance department of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was a former communicant of St. Steven's Roman Catholic Church, Perth Amboy, and an veteran of World War II. Born in Perth Amboy, he lived there most of his life before moving to Freehold 14 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Marie Ludwigsen Kseniak; a daughter, Diane Canto of Freehold; two brothers, Lewis Kseniak of Toms River, and Edward Kseniak of Muncie, a sister, Mary Czech of Perth Amboy; and three grandchildren, Kyle, Kevin and Kristin Canto; and many nieces and nephews.

DONALD "CATFISH" LEWIS, 72, of FREEHOLD, died yesterday at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. He was a maintenance mechanic for Nestle, Freehold Township, for 38 years, retiring in 1990.

He was a Navy veteran. He was an ex-captain and exempt member of Goodwill Hook Ladder Company of the Freehold Fire Department and a member of the Freehold Fin, Fur, and Feather Club. He was also a former member of the Marlboro Fire Department. Born in Freehold, he was raised in Marlboro and returned to Freehold 50 years ago. He was predeceased by three brothers, Stanley, Myron and Raymond; and a sister, Thelma Borden.

DUERRLER, 90, of KEANSBURG, died yesterday at Beachview Immediate Care Facility, Keansburg. She was the of Mae and Harry's Taxi, Keansburg, for 25 years. She was a member of St. Ann's Church, Keansburg. She was a member Night Owls CB Radio Club, Middletown, and the Happy Go Lucky Social Club, Newark.

Born in Newark, she lived in Keansburg since 1944. Her husband, Emil "Harry" Duerrler, died in 1983; and a son, Emil "Harry" Duerrler died in 1991. She was a member of the Ocean Grove Auditorium Choir. She was a loving wife and mother. Born in Neptune, she was a lifelong resident of the Shore area. Her husband, Charles M. Egan, died in 1975.

He was a draftsman in New York with Local 28 for many years. He later worked for Ebasco, Stuart, retiring cousin, Patricia Pizzano of Iselin, Woodbridge; a niece, Cherie Zimmerman of Colonia, Woodbridge; and a nephew, Paul Pizzano of Iselin. Visitation will be held 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Lakewood Funeral Home, 6250 Route 9, Howell.

WILLIS L. SHIRLEY, 83, of Wanamassa, OCEAN TOWN- SHIP, died Saturday at Laurelton Village Rehabilitation Center, Brick. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and later worked for the federal government. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign War Post 2226, Oakhurst, Ocean Township. Born in Rochester, N.Y., he lived in Wanamassa for many years.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lilian; two daughters, Carol and Joan; and two granddaughters, Robyn and Deanna. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church of Oakhurst. ELSEWHERE JEAN-PIERRE AUMONT, a French actor who brought continental charm to the romantic roles he played on stage and in film during a career that spanned seven decades, died yesterday. He was 90.

Mr. Aumont died at his home in the French Riviera resort of St. Tropez, city officials said. No cause of death was immediately given. Born Jean-Pierre Salomons in Paris, Mr.

Aumont appeared in more than 60 films and television series. He began his career on the French stage in the early 1930s before switching to film and television. He also served with distinction the early days of World War II, earning both the Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre. He then emigrated to the United States, where he was signed by MGM and made his Hollywood debut in 'Assignment in Brittany" in 1943. Mr.

Aumont co-starred with Leslie Caron and Mel Ferrer in "Lili," and on Broadway he costarred with Vivien Leigh in "Tovarich" and Al Pacino in "Camino Real." His last performance came in 1998, in a TV miniseries adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas novel "The Count of Monte Cristo." Mr. Aumont himself took note of his long career in accepting an honorary award at the 1991 Cesars, the French equivalent of the Academy Awards. "For some days now, I have been wondering why I would be chosen for this award. And then I believe I found the answer: It's to compensate me for my longevity," he said. Among his other films are "Day for Night" by Francois Truffaut in 1973; "The Song of Scheherazade" in 1947; "The Seven Deadly Sins" in 1962; and "The Happy Hooker" in 1975.

autobiography, "Sun and Shadow," was published in 1976. The Associated Press CURT BLEFARY, of POMPANO BEACH, the 1965 American League Rookie of the Year, died Sunday. He was 57. Mr. Blefary played eight seasons in the major leagues with the Orioles (1965-68), Houston Astros (1969), New York Yankees (1971-72) and San Diego Padres (1972).

He won the AL Rookie of the Year Award after hitting .260 with 22 home runs and 70 RBIs. On April 27, 1968, Mr. Blefary caught Tom Phoebus' no-hitter. Blaming his offensive decline on the constant defensive shuffling at Baltimore, he was traded to Houston in 1969 in a deal that sent Mike Cuellar to the Orioles. After retiring, the Brooklynborn Blefary's love of baseball kept him close to the game.

He was a volunteer coach for Northeast High School in Fort Lauderdale. The Associated Press TOM LEA, a West Texas artist whose landscape paintings are displayed in national galleries and numerous private collections, died Monday. He was 93, Mr. Lea had won acclaim beginning in the 1930s as a landscape painter, muralist and writer as well as his work as a World War II correspondent for Life Magazine. But it was Mr.

Lea's recognition by then Texas Gov. George W. Bush that gained him renewed popularity. Bush ended his speech last August at the Republican National Convention by quoting Mr. Lea's 1968 book, "A Picture Gallery." Bush, who owns some of Mr.

Lea's artwork, said Mr. Lea "captured the way I feel about our great land, a land I love." Mr. Lea, whose works hang at The Smithsonian Institution, did murals in the 1930s for the Benjamin Franklin Post Office in Washington, D.C., the West Texas Room of the Hall of State in Dallas and El Paso's federal building. He also illustrated "The Longhorns" by J. Frank Dobie.

Lea also wrote and illustrated "The Brave Bulls" and "The Wonderful Country." Other works include "In the Crucible of the Sun," "A Picture Gallery," and "The Hands of Cantu." The Associated Press STEPHEN MALCOLM. a Jamaican soccer player, killed in a car crash Sunday just hours after playing in an exhibition game against Bulgaria. He was 30. The defender, nicknamed "Shorty," made his 91st international appearance in Sunday's scoreless tie. He was on the roster of the Reggae Boyz at the 1998 World Cup and started against Argentina and Japan.

The Associated Press DANIEL PERSICO, of AM- STERDAM, N.Y., a retired sailor who was one of the last living survivors of a daring submarine rescue mission off the New Hampshire coast in 1939, died Friday. He was 82. Mr. Persico was aboard USS Squalus when it sank in the Atlantic Ocean about 15 miles offshore. Twenty-six of the submarine's 59-member crew died; 33 others had to wait until a Navy diving bell could be lowered 240 feet to rescue them.

Mr. Persico spent his entire naval career in submarines, retiring in 1956. He was awarded a Bronze Star. Mr. Persico founded the Carfel Supply Co.

in 1978 and served as its chief executive officer until his death. The Associated Press JOSEPH RICCI, the millionaire race track owner who founded a drug treatment center and twice ran unsuccessfully for Maine governor, died Monday of cancer. He was 54. Mr. Ricci was best known as owner of the Scarborough Downs harness-racing track, but he also worked in politics, where he was not afraid to knock the establishment.

He was quick to go to court when he believed he was wronged and was rewarded with a $15 million judgment against one of the state's biggest banks after it cut off his line of credit.
