Tim Burton should have kept his stinking paws off 'Apes' MOVIE REVIEW By ELEANOR O'SULLIVAN Movie Writer its own and certainly by comparison, Tim Burton's "Planet of the Apes" is a disappointment. Chiefly, you get the feeling this isn't a Tim Burton movie. It doesn't have the heart wit technological innovation or goofy humor Attacks!" "Peewee's Big of a Burton movie.

In fact, it's virtually personalityless. You're left wondering, why did he bother adapting a classic that doesn't fit his sensibility? Maybe because he grew up loving it. Burton, working with a screenplay by three writers, takes off from the 1968 original movie that starred Charlton Heston and was that unusual hybrid: both a big commercial hit and a cult favorite. It still plays well today. That version is about astronauts of the future whose ship crashes on an arid planet; they are then captured by the ruling class: apes.

The apes treat the "Mighty Joe Young," this isn't: Tim Roth plays an ape military leader who tries to subdue Mark Wahlberg. humans like, well, like humans treat apes like stupid animals. Heston is the man of reason who must convince the educated apes that he is rational and intelligent. The 1968 movie, though on the dinky side, gives you the creeps because of its existential angst and its desolate ending, which remains politically potent. Burton's movie, which retains the astronaut crash on the strange planet and the apes running the show theme, begins with a crucial mistake: the casting, in the Heston role, of Mark Wahlberg, a wonderful actor in the right role CRITICS ARE LAPPING IT UP! He lacks command and authority, and he's too diminutive to convince you he can lead a bunch of terrified, ignorant but beefy, strangers. It's like watching Mickey Rooney lead the charge of the brigade. Burton and the writers continue the miscue by scrapping the original movie's benchmarks and then not giving us anything of substance in their stead.

Wahlberg has no Earthly colleagues, so he has no one to bounce off; he doesn't suffer a throat injury, SO there's no buildup to his finally talking to the startled apes; he talks from the get-go but has nothing of interest to say. The villains are not wolves in eggheads' clothing, as was Maurice Evans in the original. They are -active monkeys who soar through the air, recalling, badly, the "Wizard of Oz" flying monkeys.

Tim Roth is the meanest villain; Paul Giamatti is the slyest (he's a slave trader with a Dickensian spin). Michael Clarke Duncan is the good guy-bad guy ape, a negligible role. Burton has decided to surrender the original movie's intellectual ambitions for action, so we have people constantly on the run, bashing each other at thundering decibel levels but with practically no thrills. We know Burton is capable of much better, more feeling work, so why has he contributed to what can only be seen as the degradation of the art of film? This movie appears to be made for very undiscriminating audiences or very young ones who don't know about the original movie. The great accomplishment of the 1968 "Planet of the Apes" was that heart and soul leached through the rubber ape masks and monklike costumes.

Moreover, Heston allowed himself to be humiliated and beaten, quite the change from "Ben Hur" and "The Ten Commandments," and we admired him for it. Tim Burton's "Planet of the Apes" is a soulless movie about movie love and not much else. A ravishing new film from the director of THE SCENT OF GREEN PAPAYA "MESMERIZING!" "SURREALLY BEAUTIFUL!"
