PAGE H10 ASBURY PARK PRESS SUNDAY, FEB. 18, 2001 COLLEGE FOOTBALL RALLY EXTRA NJSIAA BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIPS Central 2nd by five pins; Arlale 5ii Response good on Junior Day By MATT KRAUTHEIM STAFF WRITER NORTH BRUNSWICK Five pins. That's all that separated Central Regional's girls bowling team from the GIRLS state title, as the mhm Golden Eagles finished second to Woodbridge yesterday at the NJSIAA Championships at Carol ier Lanes. Central, led by senior Heather Iannaccio's 607 series and junior Lauren Dawkins' 602, came from fourth place after the second game to finish with a 2,648 pinfall. Woodbridge finished with 2,653.

The Eagles had been fourth after the first game and re (159-438), Jacque Sandfort (154-449) and senior Erin Carroll (179-497) each bowled at or near their high games late for the Panthers. Howell (2,429) was seventh, paced by Lisa Friscioni (224-551), Emerald Platzer (183-522) and Liz Carragher (189-480), and Tara Slocum (206-523) and Melissa Long (158-452) helped Jackson finish ninth. Sophomore Diane Raimann of Toms River South (204-566) finished in the top 10 series on the day. Kendall Thomas of Manchester (186-496) and Michelle Muzyka of Middletown South (181-474) also competed individually. Memorial sixth; Velez 5th WRESTLING eventually can compete for a national championship.

Yesterday's prospects included such blue-chippers as quarterback Chris Olsen of Wayne Hills, tight end Anthony Fa-sano of Verona, defensive end Tamba Hali of Teaneck, tight end Freddy Rivera of Paterson Catholic, defensive end Melic Brown of Woodrow Wilson in Camden and two-way lineman Jason Alford of Orange. Olsen, who has visited Boston College, Penn State and Miami with a visit to Virginia planned next week, said, "Bringing in a coach like Greg Schiano from a big program like Miami is making the difference. Rutgers is definitely a possibility for me now." That sentiment was echoed by Fasano, who was coming off visits to BC and Penn State and a trip to Syracuse last fall. He said how Rutgers does in its first season under Schiano will be important to him. Elizabeth High School linebackers Ibrahim Helsey, Akeem Jackson and Mike Bruscianelli sat together during the game, with Rutgers linebacker Raheem Orr, who spoke yesterday.

"Raheem has been chauf-feuring us around, giving us the tour, and coach Schiano is a very inspiring speaker," said Helsey. "He's said a lot of things that really touched me. At first I wasn't really looking at Rutgers that much. But he's got a lot of great athletes and he's doing a lot of good things with the program so far.which is really impressing me." High school football prospects react favorably to Rutgers and coach Greg Schiano, By GENE RACZ STAFF WRITER PISCATAWAY With 15:43 to go in the first half of the Rutgers-Georgetown men's basketball game yesterday, a throng of football prospects high school juniors and their families began filing up the bleachers behind one of the baskets. It happened during a break in the action, and the crowd of 7,302 applauded and then broke into the chant of "R-U! R-U!" The prospects had been invited by Rutgers coach Greg Schiano on Junior Day.

They showed up from all sections of the state, with some making the trip in from New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware. "We have to recruit the Stpte of Rutgers' in every grade," said Schiano, "so hether you're a freshman, a sophomore, a junior or going to be a senior, we're going to know where every prospect in the state is. We're going to be in every school in the state, every year. When you do that, you can track kids all he way in their whole careers." Schiano delivered his message yesterday, preaching partnership and trust and his mission to keep the best athletes in the state so Rutgers ft Flat Rate Phone ServiceUnlimited Talk Time $69 95 per month Mention this ad for '10 OFF per month! CALL FOR INFO: Congratulations For the second time in three days, Brick (2,553) beat Brick Memorial (2,545) by a few pins, but this time it was for third place. The Dragons were paced by Jill Britton (203-556) and Dawn Wasner (191-536), and got a clutch performance from substitute Melissa Musto, who had marked in the final six frames of a 224 game.

The Mustangs started slowly, but the day's fifth-best series by Dotti Artale (248-588) and contributions from Kelli Bamforth (180-499) and Jess Worsley (161-440) helped them climb back toward the top. Point Pleasant Boro rolled a 917 in its final game to claim sixth place. Jenn Cardiello (218-537), Kristine Bonham (205-537), Christina Rossetter NJSIAA WRESTLING Absegami wins state title Absegami High School, No. 2 in the Gannett New Jersey rankings, beat Phillipsburg 38-22 in the state Group IV team wrestling championships last night. It was Absega-mi's first state wrestling title.

Ray Lamb's pin at 160 pounds was pivotal. The teams had met Feb. 3, with Absegami (22-0) winning 34-21, but Lamb lost a 4-2 decision to Derek Schisler then. Lamb, who transferred from Millville before this season, pinned Schisler 27 seconds into overtime this time. Lamb trailed 6-5 as the clock ticked down the final seconds before scoring a takedown with four seconds left.

But then, for reasons only Lamb can understand, he jumped up in the final second and allowed Schisler an escape point. "I can't tell you the words I was thinking," said Absegami coach Gene Barber, who won his first state title in his 24 years of coaching. "But somebody has always stepped up. This was Ray's turn." Lamb tried to shake hands and get off the mat but overtime was held anyway. Who knew that Lamb would score a takedown 15 seconds into the period and then score the biggest pin of his life at Phillipsburg's run of state championships ended at six and Group IV titles ended at four.

GROUP Paulsboro won its 19th straight state Group I title, easily defeating Bound Brook 47-15 in the semifinals and Belvediere 63-9 in the final. Winning by pin in both matches for Paulsboro were Jeff Smith at 125 and James Funk at 189. Winning two matches on the day were Howard Loundsberry at 112, Ryan O'Hara at 119, Keros Cooper at 135, Trevor Suter at 140, Gregg Croce at 145, Tom Giorgianni at 152, Zack Garren at 160 and Mike Mendenhall at 215. GROUP II: After squeezing past Kingsway 30-26 in the semifinals, Kittatinny (21-1), the No. 1 team in the Gannett New Jersey rankings, walloped Delaware Valley 34-18 in the final after racing to a 24-0 lead.

Junior Matt Valenti (27-0) had a technical fall at 112 pounds and 27-2 Doug Morrow put the Cougars up 21-0 with a 10-4 win over Lance Thatcher at 130. The Cougars clinched the match at 171 when senior Dave Curtin held Terrier star Alex Shallop to a 6-2 decision. GROUP III: Third-ranked South Plainfield defeated High Point 45-21 in the final, as Rich Gebauer (26-0) won the first points for the Tigers at 112 pounds with a pin of Shane Swarts. Matt Anderson, undefeated at 119, wrestled at 125 and pinned Trevor Annuzzi at 3:10, and South Plainfield (16-1-1) would go on to earn a 42 3 lead by taking eight straight bouts from High Point (16-6-1). PAROCHIAL Camden Catholic's lightweights set the tone with five pins and one decision to lead the 13th-ranked Fighting Irish to a 56-17 victory over St.

Peter's Prep. Ryan McCormick, Ed Giosa, Mark Koszyk, Bob Stinson and Dennis Kelley all recorded pins as Camden Catholic took a 33-0 lead after the 135-pound bout. PAROCHIAL St. Aueustine junior Brandon Taylor won a 7-3 decision at heavyweight, giving the Hermits a 34-28 victory over Gloucester Catholic. Dawkins tripled, Heather tripled and Kathleen (Tuorto) had two strikes and a 9. "This was the first time we've had two girls get hot at the same time. We were hoping to peak out at the end of the season," he said. "It worked out well." Tuorto, a junior, bowled a 578 with a 204 in her third game, while Melissa Polio (156-447) and Debra Torres (180-414) contributed. 3. Athlete's Name (please print) Position Stars By MATT KRAUTHEIM STAFF WRITER NORTH BRUNSWICK Brick Memorial's boys bowling team gave its coach a great sendoff yesterday, even if it didn't go exactly as the BOYS bowlers had mmmmmmmm planned. Tom O'Rourke, the only coach in the 21-year history of the Mustang boys' program, will retire from both teaching and coaching after this season knowing that his final team put in its best effort in a return trip to the state finals that took 14 years to earn. The Mustangs finished with a pinfall of 2,826, sixth-best overall and best of the three Shore Conference boys teams at the NJSIAA Championships yesterday at Carolier Lanes. Seniors Rob Crane (184-530), Steve Woelfer (185-532) and Tom Hegedus (185-512), and freshman Jim Rogers put in one of the day's top series and high games (267-681) to lead the Mustangs.

"We weren't getting many breaks today," team captain Woelfer said. "A lot of tough splits and hooks." "This is a great group of, kids," O'Rourke said, "and they'll continue to have something special here after I am gone." Howell finished ninth, with a 2,789 pinfall, behind Jon Hoyt's 590 series and John Jackowski's 222 high game. Monmouth Regional the Central Jersey sectional champion, finished 10th, with Glenn Grob (235-566), Nick Russo (195-532), Bob Schafer (240-603) and Tim McEntee (181-507) contributing. Jason Cardamoni (210-541) started the morning in Pennsylvania with his family, but left before 6 a.m. to reach the tournament.

"It's a thrill being here, so it was worth it," he said. Individually, Mater Dei's Mike Velez rolled a 651 to finish fifth. "It was my goal all year just to be here," he said. "To finish fifth overall is just a great accomplishment for me, and a great way to end my four years." Central sophomores Travis Bara (212-569) and Billy Kulka III (218-592) finalized a season that culminated in a Shore Conference Tournament title.
