The Mustangs lost the South Jersey Group IV match 31-28. By SCOn STUMP STAFF WRITER With no Shore Conference wrestling teams advancing to Championship Saturday for the second straight season, the focus has now turned to the district tournaments that begin Friday. In some districts, winning a title at certain weights will be almost as much of an accomplishment as winning a Region VI title because of the concen- tration of tal- N0TEB00K ent.

ihwbm Perhaps the most glaring example of this is in District 23, where 135 is one of the most stacked weights of any district. Included at this weight are Brick Memorial's Dave Rogers (20-2), Point Boro's Ryan Crannell (16-10), Point Beach's Ben Sirchio (17-6), Brick's Bobby Lusby (16-9), Long Branch's J.P. Swoope (14-7) and Wall's Ed Eulas (15-8). Rogers, a two-time District 23 champion, has to be considered the favorite. But he suffered an injury in a 30-30 tie with South Plainfield Feb.

8 and missed the Mustangs' loss to Washington Township Tuesday. He should be healthy by Friday. "We couldn't take a chance with Rogers (against Washington Township)," Mustangs coach Tony Caravella said. "He has a good chance in districts and regions, so we didn't want to aggravate (the injury)." Swoope battled Rogers before losing a close bout early in the season and could be a surprise. Crannell and Sirchio each have some quality wins but neither one has been wrestling well of late.

Crannell has lost his last two bouts and was pinned by Eulas two weeks ago. Sirchio also has lost his last two bouts. Thirteen of Eulas'. 15 wins have come by pin, usually as a result of an excellent cradle, which he used to pin Crannell. Eulas could be dangerous if he gets on a roll.

Lusby is probably the biggest underdog, but will not be an easy victory for whomever he faces. Turning the corner Under new coach Adam Le-wandoski, Freehold is on the verge of its first winning season since 1985. Last Saturday's win and tie, plus a win over St. Rose Wednesday ran its record to 7-8-2. Freehold has won four out of its last five matches after only winning two last season.

The Colonials have a tri-meet with Red Bank Catholic and Rumson-Fair Haven today, so they will have to wrestle their best to have a shot, especially against the Bulldogs. "I think that since the begin-ing of the season we have just gotten a lot better as a team," said John James, Freehold's 171-pound junior. "Everyone wants to win and coach has really pushed us hard. He pushes us all the time." "The one thing is that they believe in the program and they believe in me and what I teach," Lewandoski said. "They have a great work ethic and a great attitude.

Right now everything is working. We have not had one down moment this season. We all believe in what we are doing." Still got it Tony Caravella and his staff at Brick Memorial showed why they are one of the best groups around Tuesday as they engineered a near upset in a 31-28 loss to Washington Township in the South Jersey Group IV semifinals. With starting 135-pounder Dave Rogers out with an injury and starting 215-pounder John Palmisano gone because of dis ciplinary reasons, Caravella had Drew Duddy cut to 119 and bumped Marc Rosenfeld up to 125. Both won to get the Mustangs back into the match.

Had Kasey Stahlin been able to pull off a decision at 135, after wrestling up two weights, Memorial had a good shot at advancing against a team that mauled a talented Lenape team in the quarterfinals. Backup Nick Tinker only trailed Mike D'Andrea 6-3 at 215, but ended up getting pinned to tie the match in Memorial's last real chance to catcha break. The Minutemen moved on to give Absegami a test in a 35-24 loss in the final to prove their win was no fluke. "You can't use the injuries as an excuse. We just came up a little short," Caravella said.

Hall of Fame The New Jersey chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame has honored eight men in its first year, including Ernie Finizio, the assistant director of the New Jersey State Interscho-lastic Athletic Association and state tournament director for 23 years, and former state runner-up Tom Seitz from Red Bank Catholic. Also being honored are four- time state runner-up Sam Cour-sen, former state champion and chief official Sam Crosby, Princeton coach Johnny Johnson, former Bound Brook coach Mike Schibanoff, former Paul-sboro coach and current Courier-Post of Cherry Hill assistant sports editor John Vogeding and three-time NCAA champion Mike Caruso, a St. Benedict's Prep graduate. Keep your eye on With the dual meet season all but over, there are a few young teams that should be ones to watch next season. Three are in Class A North as Middletown North, Howell and Manalapan all will return almost their entire starting lineups next season.

Howell in particular might have enough firepower to break into the elite top four in the Shore as seen in their recent narrow loss to Southern. However, the Rams also will bring back almost everyone. Finally, Brick can hang with a majority of the teams in the conference up to 152. Although not yet on the level of division rivals Brick Memorial and Toms River East, Brick could be a force if its young upper weights improve with a season of experience under their belts.
