The win gave Toms River East the first Handchen Cup title in its 14-year history. No. 4 TH North I No. 2 CBA River Dell scored 11 seconds after the opening face-off and amassed a 4-1 lead in the second period.

"They beat us to every loose puck in the first period," said Toms River East coach Dick Strada. "Slowly we recovered and started to play our game." The Raiders scored three unanswered goals in the span of four minutes in the second period, beginning with a short-handed goal by Jeff Roth-man. Senior Steve Green added two goals to lead the Raiders. O'Leary scored the game winner on a power play with slightly more than four minutes remaining in regulation. CBA's attempt to force an overtime was thwarted by Tyler, whose size and aggressiveness caused CBA sophomore guard Todd Billet (the brother of Rutgers guard Geoff Billet) to abort a baseline drive with four seconds left Tashawne Corbett moved in to tie up Billet with two seconds remaining, with the possession arrow favoring Long Branch.

CBA opened the game with a zone defense but a pair of 3-point field goals by Wheeler and another by Walden sent the Green Wave to a 13-4 lead.

The Colts switched to a man-to-man defense and eventually went on a 14-3 run that gave them a 28-21 halftime lead. Until scoring the final points, Long Branch did not have the lead after Sheehy's putback lifted CBA to a 23-21 edge with 2:03 left in the second quarter, A 3-point field goal by Billet (12 points) gave CBA a 40-33 lead with 7:15 left in the game. Long Branch's closing 11-2 run included five points by Walden and a basket by Wheeler. CBA coach Ed Wicelinski said, "I have no regrets. I'm really proud of the kids and the effort they made.

We played a good team really close. Maybe our shot selection wasn't that patient, but a loose ball here, a rebound there, and it could have gone our way." "We have so much respect for CBA," Covin said. "This was the game people wanted to see all year." Mobil'8 said. "On those two baskets, we went too far out against (Tashawne) Corbett in the corner. That gave them room for the easy entrance pass.

But we adjusted quickly after that." Just as they adjusted to the Long Branch defense by finding ways to get 'the ball to Kevin Sheehy cutting to the basket. It was usually Pat Delany doing that. His passing was on target most of the day and kept the CBA attack on the move. Sheehy not only scored, but managed to block one of Walden's drives in the third period. "That fired me up," Walden said.

"Today was the first time we've asked him to go down low like that," Covin said. "I never thought we were going to need that against CBA "Luckily, E.G. and the rest of them were up to the challenge," Covin said. So was CBA, even in a losing effort. "Somebody has to lose," Wicelinski said.

"But I think we snowed a few people we belonged on the floor with them."
