gineers society Wednesday evening Public Is Aked lo Semi Commiltce Scurrilous Articles of Campaign WASHINGTON. (Ph-Politicians and public-spirited citizens were requested today to send all examples of "scurrilous and vicious campaign literature" used In this year election to the special senate committee appointed to police the national contests. Chairman Gillette (D-Iowai, issuing the request, said the material would be used to give the "American people a complete picture of this type of campaign methods." "Every campaign has developed some of this undercover material but this one apparently produced more than ever." the senator told reporters. "The committee will ask both national political headquarters to furnish copies of this scurrilous campaign literature." The senator said much of this "smear" material had been distributed by "undercover methods and late in the campaign so there was no chance for a fair answer to it." He said the senate committee also wanted to a-ssemble "advertisements and pamphlets designed to make special appeal to racial or religious prejudices." Altho the special senate group was requested to nake recommendations for remedial legislation, Senator Gillette said that the traditional "freedom of the press" would prevent enactment of "any law to cure this." "Every fair-minded citizen condemns this type of campaigning and our effort will be directed toward an enlightened citizenry which, after all. is the chief protection for the free ballot." Meanwhile, Senator Gillette said the full committee would assemble soon to "canvass the reports of our Investigat-B ors" on charges of alleged campaign and election violations of the law or Irregularities.

Find Cannon Near Arsenal DOVER. (P) Despite a realistic explanation by police, new tales of "Fifth Column" activity sprang up in this rural area today following the discovery of a German-made cannon "pointed at the Picatinny army arsenal." Besides the arsenal, a navy ammunition depot and a big private powder plant are located nearby. Natives are inclined to be bitter, therefore, at the slightest suggestion of subversive activities within their midst. Capt. William O.

Nicol. Morristown, commander of the northern New Jersey state police troop, said it was "exaggerated" to say the gun was aimed at the arsenal, since "there were at least five miles of distance and a small mountain Intervening." He said the three-inrh cannon had ten "standing 12 years" and had been impletely forgotten by the owner when was discovered in good working condition in a barn near Lake Swan-nanoa. A former Swiss collector of firearms had bought it from the Swiss government and amused himself by shooting Into the lake, Nlcol explained. Naval authorities, after obtaining the owner's consent, carted the gun to Lake Denmark on the theory "it was just as well not to leave it standing around." Registry of Labor Approved in Stale i TRENTON, UP) Members of organ-iPd labor in the building trades would Tegister with the state employment service division under a plan agreed to yesterday by the New Jersey Unemployment Compensation commission and the New Jersey Building Trades council. Similar agreements with other organized labor groups might be worked out in the future, a commission spokesman said.

He emphasized that non-union workers registered for jobs at the U. C. 26 local employment service offices would not be discriminated against as a result of such agreements. Under the plan, members of unions with which cooperative agreements were consummated would r-e required to register with the employment service. The commission spokesman said this would facilitate the filling of requests for union labor on construction jobs.

Executive Director Hirold G. Hoffman and Russell J. Elldredge, director of the employment service division, were authorized by the commission to consummate the agreement with organ-jtfitfd labor groups. the Sunset Cabin. An outline of basic training plans for men to be obtained thru the selective service program said the first recruits would be sandwiched inio regular army nd national guard units and efforts made to turn them quickly into "efficient, energetic, self reliant and physically hardened soldiers." The pioneer 400.000 of the conscription program are to be mobilized by March 15. Subsequent trainees will be put thru three months of Individual drill at replacement centers belore being traasferred to units in which most will serve the remainder of their one year's active duty. By mid-March, when it Is expected that 21 strategically located replacement centers will be ready, at least a million men will be in the army's olive drab uniform.

A record Influx of enlistments yesterday swelled regular army ranks past the original goal of 375.000 professional soldiers. One of the latest volunteers was Chan Chong Yuan. 35, Chinese laundry-man in New York who held the first, number drawn in the draft lottery and decided not to wait. He wants to be a machine gunner. Besides the regular army, the national guard, to be fully mobilized by February, now numbers about 225,000.

To these will be added the 400.000 to be called up by March 15 and a like number to be mobilized by June 15. In the outline of plans for training and housing selective service recruits, the war department said assignment of the first 400.000 to regular and national guard units would depend upon existing vacancies in those units, the need for men of specialized qualifications and the availability of shelter, food and equipment.
