He was an avionics instructor and procurement manager at Fort Dix for 30 years, retiring in 1992. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 13th Armored Division. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Carteret, where he was past secretary and president. He was named a Kentucky colonel in 1973. He attended St.

John's Roman Catholic Church, Lakehurst. Born in Newark, he lived in Linden before moving to Pine Lake 25 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Chris Brosky Philips; three sons, Philip Galletta of Manchester, Joseph Gal-letta of Jackson and Ted Galletta of Manchester; three daughters, Claire Bartolomeo of Keyport, Elaine Conte of Elizabeth and Deborah Galletta of Nebraska; a sister, Edna Hmeleski; 17 grandchildren; and a Mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Veronica's Roman Catholic Church, Howell.

ERNESTINE RUNGE, 91, of Cream Ridge, UPPER FREEHOLD, died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital of Burlington County, Mount Born in Elizabeth, she lived there, for 62 years before moving to Mil-: ford in 1970 and to Cream Ridge in 1990. She was predeceased by her husband, George F. Runge a George and her parents, Frank' and Meda Van Dyke. During World War II, she served as a nurse in the Woman's Army Corps, attaining the rank of first lieutenant. Born in New York City, she lived in Newark and in Hazlet for more than 30 years before moving to the West Keansburg section 14 years ago. Her husband, Karl, died in 1992; a daughter, Karen Murphy, died in 1988; and a daughter, Kathleen Crane, died in 1986. Surviving are two sons, Richard Egan of New Port Richey, and Michael Egan of Wichita Falls, Texas; four daughters, Mary Nicholl of Hazlet, Nancy Egan of New York City, Michele Weir of Hanau, Germany, and Renie Egan of West Keansburg; a sister, Elizabeth Uphoff of Morristown; and eight grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m.

She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1938 and received her medical degree five years later. She was a member of the Ridgewood Women's Club and was a an avid pianist. Born in Philadelphia, she lived in Waldwick and Lakehurst before moving to Whiting in 1992. Surviving are two sons, Robert White Beck of Whippany and Joseph Arnold Beck of Weston, two daughters, Marcia Salner of Springfield, 111., and Laura McGrath of Santa Fe, N.M.; and eight grandchildren. IDA M. SWANSON BONNING, 90, of POINT PLEASANT BEACH, died Monday at home. She was a clerical worker for the Fireman's Fund Insurance New York, for 30 years, retiring in 1970. She attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, Point Pleasant Beach. She was a member of the Roselle Park Seniors.

Born in Good-ridge, she lived in Roselle Park for many years before moving to Point Pleasant Beach two years ago. Her husband of 59 years, Henry, died in 1998. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Janice. Surviving are a son, Henry 0. of Point Pleasant Beach; four granchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m today at Laurelton Memorial Funeral Home, 109 Pier Ave. at Route 70, Brick. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Graceland Memorial Park, Kenilworth.

NICHOLAS CHAC0NIS 72, of BARNEGAT, died Saturday at home. He worked at Allegheny Steel in Wallingford, for 25 years, retiring in 1989. He was a 20-year Navy veteran, serving in World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the Compass Lodge 9 Free and Accepted Masons, Wallingford. Born in Long Island City, N.Y., he lived in Wallingford before mov- ing to Barnegat in 1990.

He was predeceased by his par-! ents, Emanuel and Mary Xenakis Chaconis; and his first wife, Jennie "Babe" Carlisi Chaconis. Surviving are his wife, Dolores DeFrancesco Chaconis; a son and daughter-in-i law, Nicholas Jr. and Kerry Corcoran Chaconis of Cheshire, three brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Judy Tirakes of Fair-lawn, Arthur "Duke" and Argy Chaconis of Barnegat, and Louis and Stephanie Chaconis of Lakewood; a sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Nikito Theocharides of Astoria, Queens; three grandchildren, Jennie G. He was a former leader of Boy Scouts Troop 43, Point Pleasant, and a sports booster at Point Pleasant Boro High School. He attended Rutgers University and Monmouth College. He was an avid fisherman and boater. Born in Neptune, he lived in Point Pleasant most of his life and had a home in Boynton Beach, Fla.

He was predeceased by a sister, Dottie Brandt; his father and stepmother, William and Dorothy Wright; and his stepfather, John Camisa. Surviving are his wife, Jean Wright; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bill Wright of Nevada, and Robert and Diane Wright of Toms River; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lisa and Kevin Farley of Brick, and Deborah Wright of Point Pleasant; his mother, Valarie Camisa of Lakewood; three sisters, Valerie Guancione of Cedar Grove, Cathy Bolen of West Orange and Mary Lou Mason of Brick; and seven grandchildren, Alyssa, Jordan, Madison, Christopher, Anto-nette, Christina and Antonio. He was labor relations department chief for Western Electric Kearny, now part of for 35 years. He retired in 1988. He served in the Army in the 1950s. He graduated from Fordham University, the Bronx, with a bachelor's degree in psychology, and attended Georgetown University. He was a member of the Verona High School Sports Boosters.

Born in Newark, he moved to Verona 42 years ago and had a summer home in West Allenhurst. Surviving are his wife, Tina DeL-uca Angelillo; three sons, Marc C. in of Skaneateles, N.Y., Joseph T. of Bloomfield and Gregg M. of Hoboken; three daughters, Tina Louise Wojtal of Ellicott City, Md Donna Marie Halpin of New Tripoli, and Barbara Jo O'Rourke 6f Hing-ham, a brother, Dr.

Born in Islip, N.Y., she lived in New York City and was a summer resident of the Shore before moving to Loch Arbour in the 1950s. Her husband, Conway Cohalan, died in 1994.

Surviving are three sons, Conway Cohalan Jr. of Leonardo, Middletown, Christopher Cohalan of Los Angeles, and Denis Cohalan of West Creek, Eagleswood; four daughters, Mary LaRue of West Long Branch, Louise Bosmans of Oakhurst, Ocean Township, Ellen Foley of Wanamassa, Ocean Township, and Catherine Cohalan of Loch Arbour; and 11 grandchildren. She was directory assistant and telephone operator at Bell Telephone, Communications Workers of America Local 1002, Morristown, for 25 years, retiring in 1986. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Parents Group, Toms River.

Born in Boga-lusa, she lived in Morristown for many years before moving to Toms River 14 years ago. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Frankosky; and a son, Daniel Frankosky. Surviving are two sons, Charles Carl Jr. of Franklin, N.C. and Timothy James of Stroudsburg, four daughters and a son-in-law, Mary and Michael Holland of Toms River, Heather Casella of Ortley Beach, Dover Township, Cynthia Lynn Daly of Texas and Terri Ann Gower of Po-cono Mountains, her stepmother, Zuelima Sullivan of Boga-lusa; a brother, Eddie Mae Fdrnea of Baton Rouge, three sisters, Julia Law and Dorothy Harris, both of Baton Rouge, and Ruthie Lee Brown of Long Beach, 11 grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.

Interment will follow at St. Theresa's Cemetery, Summit. RALPH P. LUCIGNAN0, of jack-son, died Tuesday at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. He was proprietor of Oak Tree Mobile Home Park, Jackson.

He had also been proprietor of Marathon Liquors, Marathon, Adam Bowling Lanes, Hoboken, and Variety Machine Shop, Jersey City. Born in Hoboken, he lived there for 40 years before moving to Jersey City. He later moved to Marathon and then last year to Jackson. He was predeceased by his first wife, Betty Huber Lucignano; two brothers, Nicholas and Joseph; and a sister, Helen Abbate. Surviving are his wife, Rose Russell Lucignano; a son, Ralph Jr.

of Marathon, a daughter, Joann Ozupka of Hazlet; a brother, Anthony of Hoboken; two sisters, Anna McCracken of North Bergen and Angela Fon-tana of Blakeslee, a grandson, Vito Giglio; and a great-granddaughter, Melissa. There will be a graveside service at 1 p.m. Friday at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. There is no visitation. Greenville Memorial Home, Jersey City, is in charge of arrangements.

ROBERTA "BESS" MICHAEL0WSKI, 81, a lifelong resident of Paterson, whose sisters live in OCEAN COUNTY, died yesterday at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. She was a nanny in Paterson for many years. During World War II, she helped assemble airplane engines for Curtiss-Wright Corp. in East Paterson. She loved athletics and played for the UAWCIO Local 669 team in the Wom- ens' Softball League, Paterson.

She was a communicant of St. Hyacinth Roman Catholic Church, Paterson. Surviving are three sisters, Clare Obremski of South Mantoloking, Brick, Jeanette Russell of Whiting, Manchester, and Bertha Maher of Los Angeles; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

She was a graduate of Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Newark, now associated with Bloomfield College, and Jersey City State College. Born in West Orange, she lived in Madison for 26 years before moving to Point Pleasant in 1984. She was predeceased by a brother, A. Pat; a son-in-law, Dome-nick Masotta; and a granddaughter, Alish Bourland.

Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Robert a son, James F. In 1973, he moved to Barnegat and Palm Bay, living six months of the year in each state. Surviving are a sister, Grace F. MABEL L. VINCEK, 70, of Forked River, LACEY, died yesterday at home. She was a devoted wife and mother. Born in Irvington, she lived in Mayville before moving to Forked River last year. Her husband, Fred, died in November.

Surviving are a son, Thomas of Beachwood; four daughters, Diane Ott of Margate, Debra Rosinko of Richmond, Texas, Gail Mattos of Merrimac, and Susan Burdette of Camarillo, a sister, Doris Klos of Brick; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at noon Friday at Layton's Home for Funerals, 250 West Lacey Road, Forked River. WARREN E. KR0NSTAD of cok-VALLIS, an Oregon State Uni-, versity professor who worked to in-, crease the world's food supply by developing 10 new crop varieties, died of pancreatic cancer Sunday. He was 68.

Mr. Kronstad, whose OSU career: spanned four decades, trained dozens of graduate students from 27, countries and traveled the world, teaching farmers how to improve; their harvests. The crops he developed included the Stephens strain of soft winter wheat. The high-yield, tant wheat soon became the most popular variety among Northwest growers. By some estimates, the, new varieties of wheat, oats anV barley he introduced have added $20 million a year to Oregon's economy.

In 1991, Mr. Krondstad received the Presidential End World Hunger Award for developing the International Wheat and Graduate Training Program. The Associated Press KERMIT LANSNER, of new" YORK, a former Newsweek editor who helped transform the magazine; in the 1960s, died Saturday of com-' plications from lung cancer. He was; 78. When Osborn Elliott became; Newsweek editor in 1961, he se-; lected Mr.

Lansner and Gordon: Manning as executive editors. The' three are credited with remaking, the magazine in the 1960s and early 1970s and shaping the direction of. weekly newsmagazines. Their ability to handle many edi- torial tasks at once earned them the; nickname the Flying Wallendas, a-reference to circus trapeze acts. The trio's primary innovation-was ending Newsweek's mimicry of; Time magazine, which at the time; featured unsigned articles and a no-; table conservative bias.
