SATURDAY, NOV. 26, 2005 ASBURY PARK PRESS OUTDOORS BASEBALL www.app.com page C9 Word spreads quidc suf fish poung "They were in and out," Zappella said. "You couldn't predict You just had to JOHN GEISER Surf fishermen caught bass for the second day in a row Friday from Lavallette to Barn-egat Inlet, and they were hoping for continued action. Frank Zappella of Betty and Nick's Bait and Tackle, Seaside Park, said the word spread rapidly and surf fishermen were out in force. "They've been pouring down here all day," he said.

"It broke wide open at dawn, and the fish have been in and out since then." Zappella said he heard about the blitz at Lavallette, and got away from the counter at 8 a.m. only to find the fish were out of range. "They pushed out just before 8," he said. "They were just out beyond casting range." There were blitzes at Ortley Beach, Seaside Heights, Seaside Park, at the bathing beach at Island Beach, and at Gilligan's. Fish were caught on clams in the holes and cuts on incoming and high water, and on needlefish, swimming plugs and teasers, and metal and teasers on falling and low water.

"The island was packed with guys today, but you could find a place to fish," he said Friday. "There was a lot of bait in close a lot of sand eels, which is great. That should hold the bass. "This looks really good," he pointed out. "But my advice is don't wait, get out there and fish.

These fish are on the move in and out and you have to be there fishing when they come in." Zappella feels it is a late season, and his reports from New York and New England are that there are still fish stacked up that have not begun to move. "I heard there are still loads of peanut bunkers up in Rhode Island and they still have plenty of bass and blues; so there are fish to come," Zappella said. Grant Toman of The Reel Seat, Brielle, said beach fishermen and trailers caught bass Friday off Manasquan. The boaters caught bass up to 39 inches, that he heard of, and most of the beach fish were slots or fish under the minimum size. There were not a lot of bluefish caught by boaters, and very few by beach fishermen.

Bob Matthews of Capt. Bill's Bait and Tackle, Neptune, said he heard of very few bass caught in the surf between Shark River and Manasquan inlets, and there were only a handful of anglers trying at Ocean Grove and Asbury Park, and no fish were weighed in from that stretch. Mike Malek of The Dock Out fitters, Seaside Heights, said his reports from earlier included Phil Anderson, Seaside Heights, with a 13.1-pound bass on clams in Lavallette, and Mike Rum-mell had a 15.35-pound bass on clams in Seaside Park. Dave Porfirio of Dover caught short bass on plugs at Island Beach State Park, and Mark Brancoccio, Seaside Heights, had bass to 29 inches on plugs in the bay. Malek fished with Mike Tu-tela, president of the Berkeley Striper Club, and Frank Som-merer on The Jitterbug, and they caught bass from 20 inches to 35 inches while jigging buck-tails in 60 feet of water off Island Beach State Park.

They also had some 10-pound bluefish while trolling deep-diving plugs. Capt. Bob Bogan Gambler, Inlet Basin, Point Pleasant Beach, said Thanksgiving Day morning was slow for him on the grounds from Ortley Beach to Barnegat Inlet. "There was a lot of bait and bird life, but the fish were spread out, and it was not good jigging," he said. Capt.

John Brackett, Queen Mary, Point Pleasant Beach, found fish 30 minutes north of Manasquan Inlet, and encountered several schools that cooperated on his 15th annual Thanksgiving Day bass trip. Earlier Brackett had fast fishing for bass on three back-to-back trips. On one trip the boat catch totaled 81 bass with eight of them being bonus fish, the rest slots. The biggest fish was a 22-pound pool winner caught by Ed Comerford of Morris Plans. He had a dozen bass on the trip.

Brackett will continue to sail for striped bass through Dec. 4. be there, and the best time was at first light." Bill Doherty of Burlington had a typical catch for a few hours of effort: 10 bass to 26 inches. Zappella said some of the reports logged in were as high as 20 bass up to 24 inches. "I didn't hear of any big fish (Friday)," he said.

"But Lindsey Dwyer of Whiting (Manchester) had a 21-pound, 13-ounce bass (Thursday)." BASEBALL ROUNDUP Former BlueClaws skipper Manto in Pittsburgh Yankees will open next season in Oakland OFFERS: Mets talk to Bengie Molina, Ramon Hernandez Mets' GM Minaya focuses on catcher, bullpen help Goldschmidt for Hernandez are aware the intention is to illustrate the Mets' urgency. "Both are very good catchers," Minaya said. "But, we may go the trade route. We'll leave all our options open." Molina, 31, who earned $3 million last year in hitting .295 with 15 homers "I think and 69 RBI is I UIHM believed to we are a nave been of' fered around better ball the $7 mmion club today Will) CarlOS Lieberthal is Rawitch also confirmed that outfielder Jayson Werth underwent surgery last week to repair a torn ligament in his left wrist. Recovery time is up to five months, meaning Werth probably won't be ready at the beginning of spring training.

Werth was hit on the wrist by an A.J. Burnett pitch in the Dodgers' first exhibition game last spring, and missed the first 44 games of the regular season. NO GM, NO PROBLEM: The question is no longer whether the Boston Red Sox can find a general manager to replace Theo Epstein. It's whether they need to. Without a baseball boss since Epstein resigned on Halloween, the Red Sox finished up a major trade with the Florida Marlins on Thanksgiving, acquiring righthander Josh Beckett, third baseman Mike Lowell and reliever Guillermo Mota for four prospects.

The rudderless Red Sox sent four executives from the baseball operations department to the general managers' meetings in California. When the Marlins offered a deal involving Beckett and Lowell, the team picked Craig Shipley, a special assistant to the GM, to handle the negotiations. OTHER NEWS: Washington Nationals outfielder Jose Guillen should begin rehabilitating his left shoulder in a week and is expected to be ready for the regular season. Guillen should be able to start swinging a bat in about three months, Nationals spokesman John Dever said Friday. He hurt the shoulder on a headfirst slide in June, but never went on the disabled list John Hart has agreed to stay with the Texas Rangers as a consultant through 2013 and give up the opportunity to interview for general manager positions with other teams.

The Associated Press making, with Hernandez, Delgado. JeffManto, the Pittsburgh Pirates' roving minor league hitting coordinator the last three seasons, was hired Friday as new Pirates manager Jim Tracy's hitting coach. Manto joins a Pittsburgh staff that already includes bench coach Jim Lett, pitching coach Jim Col-born, first base coach John Shelby and bullpen coach Bobby Cuellar. Manto managed the Phillies' Class A Lakewood BlueClaws in the South Atlantic League in 2002. Originally from Bristol, Manto played nine seasons in the majors from 1990-2000 with the Indians, Phillies, Orioles, Red Sox, Mariners, Tigers, Yankees and Rockies.

He hit .230 with 31 homers and 97 RBI in 289 major league games after making the transition from pitcher to in-fielder while at Temple University. LA LOOKS AT MC LAREN: The Los Angeles Dodgers have received permission to interview Tampa Bay Devil Rays bench coach John McLaren for their vacant managerial job. Dodgers spokesman Josh Ra-witch said Friday he didn't know when McLaren would meet with new general manager Ned Col-letti. Rawitch also said Colletti planned to request permission to interview at least one other potential candidate who is under contract with another team. McLaren was a finalist for the Devil Rays managerial job, losing out to former Los Angeles Angels bench coach Joe Maddon earlier this month.

The only other known candidate for the Dodgers' job is former major league manager Jim Fregosi. Colletti met with Fregosi for about three hours in Tampa last weekend. McLaren spent the last 13 seasons as part of Lou Piniella's coaching staffs in Seattle and Tampa Bay. market with Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko still available. Once Konerko signed, Minaya believed there would be increased competition for Delgado.

Minaya also expects to hear from Billy Wagner's agent, Bean Stringfellow, next week with further negotiations expected to raise the Mets' initial three-year, $30 million offer up to four years and $40 million. Philadelphia reportedly offered three years at between $28 million and $32 million, but new general manager Pat Gillick has spoken with Stringfellow after Wagner's New York tour early this week. Gillick has more negotiating breathing room, having freed up $21.5 million by dealing Jim Thome to the White Sox. It is conceivable Minaya could have his off-season objectives of a power-hitting first baseman, closer and catcher wrapped up by the winter meetings. Minaya also said yesterday finding a second baseman isn't a priority, and as of today the position belongs to Kaz But, we're wh.

$13 million last sea- By JOHN DELCOS STAFF WRITER The Yankees announced Friday they will open the 2006 season at Oakland, April 3, with the Stadium opener April 11 against Kansas City. As usual, their 81-game home schedule features three appearances by American League East teams Boston (10 games), Baltimore, Toronto and Tampa Bay (nine games each), plus three against the Mets, June 30 and July 1-2. The Yankees' other interlea-gue opponents at the Stadium will be Florida and Atlanta, with games at Philadelphia and Washington. The Field Championship level box seats increased from $90 to $115 (depending on the location). These are the seats closest to the field.

The Main Championship seats increased by $5 from last year's prices of $70 and $75, while some Loge Championship seats increased from $90 to $95 and others from $95 to $100. Field box, main box and loge box seats increased by $5, from last year's prices ranging from $50 to $65. The Yankees say there are approximately 16,000 of these seats (29 percent of capacity) with the $5 increase, with another 3,000 seats having a $2 increase. There was no increase among main reserved seats (beginning at $35), tier reserved ($17) and bleacher seats By JOHN DELCOS STAFF WRITER Omar Minaya admits there will be fence mending with Carlos Delgado, but for now the Mets' general manager is focused on other construction projects. Speaking from the Dominican Republic yesterday on a conference call, Minaya said he would talk with Delgado about any lingering bruised feelings from last year's free-agent process before the slugger is introduced at a Shea Stadium press conference Monday, but his feeling is the issue is overblown and he's more concerned with adding catching and bullpen help.

"I think we are a better ball club today with Carlos Delgado," Minaya said. "But, we're not done yet as far as how this team is going to be Opening Day." Immediate speculation is getting Delgado means the Mets aren't interested in Manny Ramirez, but without mentioning the Boston slugger by name, Minaya said, "We're still going to try and improve the team if a player is out there, we're going to investigate it." That includes Florida catcher Paul Lo Duca, even though Minaya confirmed offers yesterday to free agents Bengie Molina and Ramon Hernandez. Having offers out to two players of the same position is not uncommon and both agents Alan Nero for Molina and Eric nOt QOne son while hit-vat ac far tin8 -290 with 12 JBl J5 lU homers and 58 as how this offered slightly more team IS because he's going to be Jr years youn" Opening Both offers ij.u are believed to be three years. Mets GM Minaya, who OmarMinaya expects responses from the agents early next week, wants to get this done quickly much like he did Delgado. "Left-handed power hitters don't come around often and when they do, you have to react," said Minaya, who didn't want Delgado to linger on the Reach John Delcos at jdelcosthejournalnews.com.
