I page ce www.app.com SPORTS ASBURY PARK PRESS SATURDAY, APRIL 26, 2008 Hawks' rally comes up short wanted MAN: JGR star already has offers on table Stewart keeping cool NEC TOURNAMENT LACROSSE SACRED HEART 12 MONMOUTH 11 STAFF REPORT It was too little too late on Friday for the Monmouth University women's lacrosse team. The two-time defending Northeast Conference Tournament champions scored five consecutive goals in the final 6:29 but dropped a 12-11 decision to Sacred Heart in the semifinals of the NEC Tournament in Hamden, Conn. The outcome marks the first time since 2003 the Hawks (13-5) will not play in the NEC championship. The Hawks had won seven league games in a row since bowing 12-9 to the Pioneers (11-7) in their NEC opener on March 20. With under nine minutes left, senior Ashley Waldman (Shore Regional) was disqualified when she picked up her second yellow card, and Monmouth fell behind 12-6 with 7:04 remaining.

NEC granted access to playoffs By TONY GRAHAM STAFF WRITER According to Monmouth University football coach Kevin Callahan, NCAA approval of playoff expansion for the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) has been a long time coming. It was approved Thursday. "This playoff expansion and access to the playoffs has been our No. 1 agenda for the past five years," said Callahan, currently serving as president of the FCS Coaches Executive Committee. It provides the Northeast Conference access to the playoffs in 2008 and 2009 and grants it and the Big South an automatic bid in 2010.

At that time the playoff bracket will expand from 16 to 20 teams. In 2008 and 2009 the Foot UP 'v I Tauro Tony Stewart smiles before practice for Sunday's Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. (ap photo) THE ASSOCIATED PRESS TALLADEGA, Ala. So often tempestuous, Tony Stewart was the picture of perfect calm Friday as he strolled through the garage seemingly without a care. And why wouldn't he be at peace? NASCAR's two-time champion is back on top, soaking up the spotlight, not for winning races, but as a highly coveted free agent who has triggered a bidding war that could lure him away from Joe Gibbs Racing.

His contract with Gibbs doesn't even expire until after the 2009 season, but Stewart is fielding so many enticing offers, he likely can't keep them all straight. He said he was presented with another option Friday morning, giving him two new offers in the past 24 hours. "It's very humbling and I feel very honored to be in a position that we have that many organizations interested in me as a driver," Stewart said. But all the attention on Stewart has put his team under scrutiny, again, as it seeks its first victory at Talladega Superspeed-way. Stewart has finished second at the track a maddening six times, and Talladega remains one of just four tracks where the team has not won.

Crew chief Greg Zipadelli wants nothing more than to cross Talladega off the list on Sunday, but must do so as an entire industry wonders if the team can once again handle another drama created by Stewart. Zipadelli seemed confident the team he assembled 10 years ago is strong enough and has weathered enough to survive Stewart being pulled by outside interests. in 2002 and 2005 and more than $67 million in winnings. Stewart has at least one known offer, to purchase a portion of Haas CNC Racing. Although it's not clear if driving for that team is part of the equation, the team fields Chevrolets and Stewart is currently in a Toyota for JGR.

The conflict of interest would likely mean he'd have to choose between the two, and he admits his heart is with General Motors, which has supported him his entire Cup career and currently funds several of the open-wheel teams he owns. But the ownership aspect is what's intrigued Stewart, who has slowly built an empire of low-level race teams and tracks, including the famed Eldora "Dude, we've stuck with him through punched photographers, people being run over it is what it is," Zipadelli joked about Stewart's many transgressions. "Here's the deal, it's really simple: Home Depot. The 20 car. Tony Stewart.

Greg Zipadelli. We're here 'til 2009. "We've all had opportunities to go do things. I've had them, he's had them, he obviously has another one that sounds like a great opportunity for himself and his future. Much more than that, I'm not getting caught up in that stuff right now.

We've got a great team and a great opportunity to run good here this weekend and try to win a race. And that's what we're here for." Even so, the attention was squarely on Stewart and a team that could very well disband at the end of this season despite an enormously successful tenure together that has so far racked up 32 victories, championships came here and even since we've been here, she's had much more of a presence and has really been in control," said McGuire, a native of Matawan. "This was a little less overwhelming and being home probably has something to do with that. Yesterday (Thursday) she was great. That was something that juniors and seniors do in our program." Things have not been completely smooth for Tauro.

She endured a tough cross country season, while trying to get a grasp on college as a freshman and everything that goes along with that. "It's been a lot of ups and downs. Cross country season was a little rocky for me," Tauro said. "This is the first year I'm dealing with traveling on top of freshman year and first semester in college and school work. That was the biggest adjustment.

I've come a long way. I've been improving, so I hope to get close to where I was running in high school." Tauro, who won the U.S. Junior National Title at 1,500 meters in between her junior and senior years, looks like she has begun to turn the corner. Indoors, she earned All-America status in the DMR, while outdoors, she has already run an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying time of 2:09.34 in the 800. While it might have taken a little while for Tauro to really get going this year, her performance over two days at Penn reasserted her ability and what she is capable of.

"Danielle had experience here, but this is another level up and she'll tell you that in a New York minute," McGuire said. "If nothing else, it was a good baptism for the freshman." FROM PAGE CI component in both races, providing leads at the hand off both times, in helping the Wolverines win both in 10:49.58 and 17:28.98, respectively. The 10:49.58 is good for No. 2 all-time in the event at Penn and a school record by nine seconds. "I was really excited to be back," Tauro said after the DMR win on Thursday.

"My whole family and my high school teammates were here and I felt it the whole way around the track. It was really helpful. It's just great to be back here. I look forward to it every year and I'm just glad we were able to come out and run well." Tauro opened the DMR in 3:22.2 for 1,200 meters and after trailing late in the race, Nicole Edwards blew past Sarah Bowman of Tennessee for the win. There is some irony there as Tauro's last loss at Franklin Field was to Bowman in the girls high school mile in 2005 when Tauro was a sophomore.

Tauro's opening leg on Friday was clocked at 4:25.1 and she again handed off in the lead. The third leg saw Geena Gail take the lead around the final turn and hand off to Edwards who again held off Bowman. Listening to Michigan associate head coach Mike McGuire speak, he wouldn't hesitate to call this the best stretch Tauro has had since coming to Ann Arbor. Surely, being in a familiar environment had something to do with it "The last 10 days before we Speedway in Ohio. If he ultimately chooses to leave Gibbs, it most likely would be for a deal that includes a stake in the race team.

Scott in lead at Nelson after two rounds ball Championship Committee will award a guaranteed at-large position to any conference champion team that: Accrues at least eight Division I victories. Wins a minimum of two nonconference games against Division I teams from a league that has earned an automatic berth in that given year. Ranks 16th or higher in an average of the last regular season media, coaches andor computer polls. NEC teams are also eligible for at-large bids, minus the new criteria, though none has ever been granted to a member of the league. Monmouth opens its season Aug.

30 at Rhode Island and hosts Maine Sept. 6, both belonging to the Colonial Athletic Association which has an automatic bid. The No. 16 ranking would seem to be a tall order. "That's something we can't worry about," Callahan said.

"If we win each game we play, the polls will take care of themselves." Callahan said the current access and 2010 automatic bid should be a recruiting boost for NEC schools. "Not having access to the playoffs has been a point of contention in recruitment and something that other conferences have used against us," Callahan said. "That is no longer the case. "I can stand in front of our team on Monday and say we have a shot to get to the playoffs. What we do with that chance is up to us." Monmouth went 4-6 last season with a young team defensively, following a four-year run when it went 36-9 and won or shared three NEC titles.

It brings back the majority of its starters on both sides of the ball this fall, led by All-NEC quarterback Brett Burke, a Wall High School graduate. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Adam Scott returned to Australia after the Masters. It was a short visit. "I felt like I was still playing good and I shouldn't waste that at home," Scott said. GOLF ROUNDUP ers, that was enough to cement her status near the top of the leaderboard.

Only seven players were under par through two rounds, with Meena Lee (71), Mo-meko Ueda (72) and Kyeong Bae (71) at 1 under to round out that elite group. LIBERTY MUTUAL LEGENDS: Tom Watson and Andy North have been partners in victory before on the Champions Tour. This time, however, it means a lot more. Watson and North teamed to birdie the first seven holes en route to a better-ball 13-under 59 on Friday for a three-shot lead after the first round of the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf tournament at The Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Ga. ASIAN OPEN: Robert-Jan Derk-sen of the Netherlands and China's Zhang Lian-Wei both shot 3-under 69s on Friday for a share of the lead at the midway point of the Asian Open in Shanghai, China.

to give the only one of the world's top 10 players at the Nelson sole possession of the lead. STANFORD INTERNATIONAL PRO-AM: Annika Sorenstam has made no secret that she wasn't thrilled about the course setup this week at the Stanford International Pro-Am in Aventura, Fla. That doesn't mean she doesn't enjoy and thrive on demanding courses. Sorenstam shot a 4-under 67 on the Soffer course Friday, drawing her within one shot of Young Kim at the midway point of the inaugural event, being contested at Turnberry Isle. Kim also shot a 67, matching her first-round score on Turnberry's Miller track.

They'll enter the third round with a solid cushion over Paula Creamer (71) and Angela Stanford (70), both of whom were 2 under. Sorenstam's day began with three straight birdies, and on a day where par seemed like a mystifying score for most play "Hudity With An Erotic Message" Open 7 days a week Hwy. 35, Laurence Harbor, NJ 732-566-0080 www.ThcGoGoRama.com i So instead of staying home for a second week, Scott was a deadline entrant into the EDS Byron Nelson Championship, in Irving, Texas, where Friday he shot a second-round 67 to take the lead at 5-under 135. That was good for a one-stroke lead over fellow Aussies Mark Hensby (67) and Mathew Goggin (69), and Scott McCarron (66), who missed all of last season recovering from right elbow surgery. Scott began his round with four straight birdies.
