Cristina Gacos are competing to replace Critchlow, 2007's All-Shore first-team goalie. Silva said the two could split halves or alternate games early on. In terms of field players, Wall, which returns 12 players with varsity experience, seems ready to reload rather than rebuild. Lisa Valenziano and Morgan Kennedy will play in the middle of Wall's four-back defense, with Kerrie Hartnett, Maddie Maurer and freshman Morgan Thomasian in the mix for the two outside positions. Senior Kyra Janeczek is being counted on to help replace Damurjian, who scored 24 goals, in the central midfield and Hartnett believes sophomore Sam Leyh can also be a similar player to Damurjian, who was accurate and could score from distance.

"We're trying to come together," said Wagner, who by all accounts is humble and a good teammate. "We have a lot of talent, a lot of young talent." The emergence of some of that youth could take some pressure off Wagner, who Silva said has become more comfortable with her abilities over the past two years. "She's definitely more mature in a playing sense," Silva said. "I think she was timid (early on) because of her skill level, and now she's comfortable with who she is on the field and knowing what her skill level is and what she can do." By ROBERT ZIEGLER STAFF WRITER The rumor was circulating among those in the Shore Conference soccer scene as early as last spring that Gibby Wagner was going to skip this high school season. Not only is she playing, but with the sprained right knee that cost her the first month of last year completely healed, the junior could be poised for a breakout season.

That's exactly what Wall needs after losing three Asbury Park Press All-Shore first-team choices to graduation. First-year coach Jaimie Silva doesn't believe Wagner is putting too much pressure on herself to carry the Crimson Knights, however. "I think she just has the same philosophy, like 'I'm here to play, and that's all I need to worry and I think that's a good thing," said Silva, who was an assistant at Wall for five years. "I think she's just focused on playing the best she can all the time and really, that's what we're all trying to do." Wagner said she didn't take the rumors to heart and understands people tend to talk about players of her caliber. It's something she'll probably continue to deal with as her junior year progresses and she gets closer to making decisions about college.

She currently has plans to take unofficial visits to Princeton, North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, and when her club team makes a trip to Las Vegas, UCLA, Stanford and USC. "I want to take as many (visits) as I can to compare schools because they're all different in some way. I want to see everything," said Wagner, who had seven goals and five assists in a little more than half a season.

More immediate than the need to choose a college, however, is that of the Crimson Knights to replace players like April Damurjian, Kelsey Barn-ickel, Anna Decker and Cara Critchlow heading into Friday's season opener against Class North rival Freehold. The biggest question mark is between the posts. Junior Colleen Maher and sophomore FIVE PLAYERS TO WATCH FIVE GAMES TO WATCH Wall at Freehold, Friday. Two of the Shore's top teams open the season in a game with huge Class North title implications. Freehold has gone 56-5-2 the last three seasons, including a 33-2-1 mark in the division.

The Crimson Knights beat Freehold, 3-2, last year, their first win over the Colonials since 2004. Middletown North at Manalapan, Sept 27: Manalapan and Amy Carhart, who had 14 goals and nine assists last season, are looking for their first Class A North championship since 2003. The Lions have won four consecutive division titles, but must replace all-everything sweeper Julie Lancos, now at Florida State. Jackson Memorial at Brick Memorial, Oct 8: Brick Memorial is the defending Class A South champion and has won the title in seven of the last nine years. The Jaguars actually finished third, also behind Toms River North, in Class A South last year, but defeated the Mustangs, 2-1 to win their first Shore Conference Tournament title.

Manasquan at St. John Vianney, Oct 10: Led by Julia Martz, Elise Hammer and Kendall Malinowski, and on the heels of their first winning season since 2001 the Warriors will be in the Class A Central hunt. St. John Vianney came on strong at the end of last season and brings back a large and strong senior class led by Jen Mulvey. Red Bank Catholic at Holmdel, Oct 14: The other two teams expected to compete for the Class A Central title also have a lot back.

The Caseys return most of the team that advanced to the semifinals of the Shore Conference and NJSIAA Non-Public South A tournaments, and Holmdel has eight returners from its first outright division championship team. Shannon Mayrose, Freehold: Last season's Asbury Park Press Player of the Year, Mayrose led the Shore Conference in scoring with 30 goals and 10 assists. The senior, who has orally committed to Virginia Tech, scored her second goal of the NJSIAA Group III final in overtime to give the Colonials a 2-1 victory. Dana Costello, Jackson Memorial: Costello led the Shore Conference Tournament champs in scoring with 13 goals and 12 assists last season and will be counted on for even more production as a junior after the graduation of Jordan Bunch and Kierstyn Mabey. Alexandra Eagle, Freehold: The Shore's top returning defender and a two-time Asbury Park Press All-Shore first-team selection, Eagle continues to anchor a defense that has helped the Colonials go 42-3-1 the past two seasons.

Ashley Lewis, Freehold: Lewis is the top returning goalie in the Shore and the third key contributor to a team looking for its third straight and second outright state title. The senior has 37 shutouts over the past two seasons.
