Source: "Seven Superstorms of the Northeast, by James Lincoln Turner, Down the Shore Publishing, 2005. if Shannon Mullen, Staff Writer FROM PAGE 01 "We considered leaving it looked higher than the beachfront houses facing it but the wave held us there hypnotized us," he remembered. "The wave broke a few hundred feet out and as it broke, the sunlight started to stream down and turned it creamy white and the most gorgeous shade of green.

It was the most terrifying and beautiful thing I had ever seen in my life." Soul of a tiger Turner fully understands the juxtaposition. "Joseph Conrad said the soul of the ocean is a tiger," Turner said, as CNN broadcast the latest images of Hurricane Rita on the TV behind him. "You might add that the tiger has beautiful stripes." Turner was 3 and too young to remember the '38 hurricane, which swept entire communities away on its rampage across Long Island and up the coast of New England. But another superstorm, known as the Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944, struck the Jersey Shore when he was 8 and propeled a fledgling interest in the weather into a full-blown avocation. Turner vividly recalls watching that storm with his parents and two older sisters from the family's screened-in porch and And Other Blizzards, Hurricanes Tempests frmes Lincoln Turner.

The cover of James Lincoln Turner's book "Seven Superstorms of the (STAFF PHOTO: DAVE MAY) of snow along the coast. The memory of that storm was still fresh on Turner's mind many years later when he penned one of his many "The book itself is like a call to action," Eberwine said. Though the Jersey coast hasn't experienced a direct hit from a hurricane since 1903 (the center of the '44 storm passed 50 miles -ivv rr: stroyed much of Long Beach Island and the 1992 gale that severely damaged beach towns in Monmouth and Ocean counties, the intervening years have been conspicuously, and some would say ominously, weather-related haikus: Snow is the frosting Sweetening the dry, dark cake Of bitter winter. In addition to more scientific analyses of these destructive events, "Superstorms" includes some of Turner's poetry as well as his personal recollections of the storms he has witnessed firsthand. Ray Fisk, publisher of Down the Shore Publishing, said he passed on the book when Turner first submitted the manuscript in 1992.

At the time, The evening of Nov. 24, they attended a performance of "Don Giovanni" at the Metropolitan Opera House. On the way home, a strong, wailing wind kicked up. By dawn the next day, sustained winds were measured in excess of 50 mph, with gusts as high as 78 mph. Trees were felled all along the coast, and heavy rain caused widespread flooding.

Though not of tropical origin, the storm packed the wallop of a hurricane and ravaged a large section of the country, pounding the mid-Atlantic and Northeast states with wind and water. West of the Appalachians, the storm produced terrifying lightning strikes and dumped more than 20 inches of snow. The wind ripped apart the roof of Spring Lake's North End Pavilion and tore off the tops of a number of bungalows in Man-asquan. As terrible as it was, though, Turner looks back on the storm as "one of the greatest events of my life." It was for him a kind of coming-out party. The visit was a present in advance of his birthday two weeks later.

He had taken the train to New York by himself and had soaked up every note of "Don Giovanni." The next afternoon, when he and Joan ventured out to walk to the Frick Museum, the wind was still so fierce, he recalls in east of Long Branch), he said, "Who's to say one of these storms can't make a left turn" if the conditions are right. The power of music Turner's other great passion is classical music. Indeed, classical music has had such a powerful impact on his life that he says it was responsible, late in life, for his conversion from avowed atheist to high Episcopalian. "It was the spiritual power of classical music which strained my atheism to the breaking point," he said. "When I listened to the masters Bach, Mozart, Beethoven I couldn't believe anything so exquisite and ineffably beautiful could come from anything other than the divine." Turner makes a similar connection between classic music and storms, which inspired many of the great composers.

The two are closely intertwined in his memories of yet another superstorm, the Great Appalachian Storm of Nov. 24-26, 1950. Turner, who was about to turn 15, spent those days in the company of his sister, Joan, who lived in an apartment in New York City. his book, that walking up Fifth Avenue "was like trying to climb a steep hill wearing slippery sneakers." Gusts as high as 130 mph shattered thousands of windows and tilted the Empire State Building sway as much as 4 inches. A one-ton piece of cornice from Union Square tore off and crushed a 25-year-old man.

Twenty-nine other New Yorkers would lose their lives before the storm abated. That night, at Joan's Greenwich Village apartment, Turner shared dinner and a highball, with his sister and her future husband. Later, he played the new record Joan had given him for his birthday, a recording of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, again and again. To Turner, it seemed as if Beethoven "captured the very soul of the storm" in the symphony's furious finale. The 1950 storm is the seventh and most recent "superstorm" to have struck the Northeast, Turner said.

Despite a handful of subsequent storms that were intense but less-than-epic, by Turner's reckoning, including the 1962 nor'easter that de- "Joseph Conrad said the soul of the ocean is a tiger. You might add that the tiger has beautiful stripes." James Lincoln Turner, Belmar marveling at the flexibility of two towering willow trees outside his home. Those trees bent nearly to the ground, he remembers, but they never did break. "The voice of the wind was so resounding that even though there were strikes of cloud-to-ground lightning you couldn't hear the thunder," he said. "I remember spectacular sheets of white rain on the asphalt and the wind blowing it into mist.

It was a fantastic sight." At 12, Turner got his first barometer as a Christmas present. The very next day, Dec. 26, 1947, the Shore was clobbered by another superstorm, this one known as the Snow Cloudburst, which dumped nearly 30 inches There is no question in Turner's mind that another superstorm will eventually strike the Jersey Shore. This time, he fears, the destruction could far exceed that caused by the legendary storms he has chronicled in his book, because of the tremendous increase in population and development that has occurred at the Shore in the past 50 years. "One certainty of weather sooner or later the odds catch up to you," he said.

"Every year that goes without a major storm increases the odds of it happening the next year." Even so, Turner isn't about to move to high ground in Pennsylvania somewhere. He still lives a few blocks from the beach that is, after all, where the action is. Down the Shore had another storm book already in the works, "Great Storms of the Jersey Shore," by Margaret Thomas Buchholz and Larry Sa-vadove. Fisk and Turner stayed in touch, however, and eventually the timing was right. "I know for Jim Turner this book represents, truly, the work of a lifetime," Fisk said.

"He's been, if not researching, then preparing to research the book since he was a child." James Eberwine, a hurricane expert with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, helped edit Turner's book, which he called an "invaluable" educational resource.
