Fiercely independent at the time of her arrival there, she had insisted on doing her own laundry and taking care of herself as much as possible.

With time and declining health, she learned to accept increasing help as well as the kindness and affection of members of the Sunrise staff and finally Hospice. Helen was born July 8, 1913, in Brooklyn, the third of six children. Her mother, Kathryn Veronica: Sullivan, also born in Brooklyn, was the 17th child of Irish parents. Helen's father, Andrew Isadore Nordstrom, born in Goteborg, Sweden, had joined the Swedish Navy at an early age and after a few years, had come to America and joined the U.S. Navy.

He received the Congressional Medal of Honor for heroism disastrous fire aboard duriness Kearsage before Helen's birth. Helen lived with her family in the Brooklyn Navy Yard until they moved to Newport, R.I., when she was very young. In Newport, for about nine years, her family grew, and they enjoyed an old-fashioned smalltown life despite her father's frequent stints at sea. After her father was reassigned to Washing. ton, D.C., she finished junior high and high school in that city.

He died on assignment when she was 16, and her family remained in Washington, where she began her long and demanding working life. Among other positions, Helen worked as a secretary for the Prudential Insurance Co. and during World War II, in the Department of the Navy. For almost 20 years, she was administrative assistant to the dean of arts and sciences at Catholic University and finally worked for a member of the Board of Governors of the U.S. Federal Reserve until she retired.

HELEN MARIE McCARTHY, 94, of Lincroft, MIDDLETOWN, Helen met and married Francis J. McCarthy while they each lived in the Brookland section of Washington. Their daughter, Sheila, was born in that neighborhood, with members of both families living nearby. Later moving to Hyattsville, and Alexandria, Helen and Mack loved their home, often entertaining family and friends. Sheila and her husband and children spent many unforgettable times with them, too.

One of Helen's favorite activities was baking. Whether it was for serving at home, donating to church sales or sending to Sheila while in college or Sheila's children wherever they might be, she was tireless. Her chocolate chip Helen was always interested in literary pursuits. A dramatic young redhead, she enjoyed acting with her three sisters, Margaret, Ruth and Isabel, in a theater group at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Washington.

She was a voracious reader of poetry and fiction all her adult life. The stories she told and wrote for her grandchildren were vivid enough to convince Betsi that she was born Native American. Her interest in the news led her to correspond regularly with her political representatives until she was no longer able to type. Helen was predeceased by her husband, her three sisters and two brothers, Francis and Vincent, and two of her grandchildren, Joseph and Meg. She leaves behind her daughter, Sheila Eberhardt; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Kelly, Peter Eberhardt, Michael Eberhardt and Paul Eberhardt; and her nine great-grandchildren.
