"It was very important to be fast," Wilberger said. "When youVe got bullets whizzing all around you, with 75 men sitting outside waiting there wasnt a lot of time to think You just acted." Of ten working in cow pastures and cornfields, surrounded by horses and manure, surgeons typically wiped off surgical saws on their aprons between patients. "They also had morphine." It's unclear, however, whether Confederate doctors were able to obtain anesthetics because their medical records have been lost or destroyed, Wilberger said. A facility in Pittsburgh was a major supplier of morphine used in the North, Wilberger discovered while reading in an old history of medicine in the city. Pittsburgh also was the site for a fair that raised about $300,000 in a few days for the war's medical costs, a record-setting sum at the time. And West Penn Hospital once was used as a Union military hospital. WEDDINGS Mr.

CLEARANCE RACKS RE-STOCKED DAILY v4CK WW xl I Wilberger's interest in the Civil War stemmed from growing up in Richmond, Va.

After obtaining a journalism degree from the University of Richmond, Wilberger entered the medical college at Virginia Commonwealth University, also in Richmond. The campus encompasses the former Confederate White House headquarters for Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy. Reminders of the Civil War were everywhere. "I can't say I've had a lifelong interest in it, but I can say I've had a lifelong exposure to it, said Wilberger, who came to Pittsburgh in 1978. "Every few weeks, I'li pick up a new piece of information Almost every time I go into a big city, I try to find an old bookstore and go rummaging around in there." Testing themselves during a lunch hour, classmates and coworkers Miss Cline and Sandi Brummert, 25, of Monroeville, undertook the repair of a leaky faucet in the executive bathroom at the Fidelity Savings Bank in Ross. "We knew what we were doing, but we weren't strong enough to turn some of the nuts. Everything was corroded," said Miss Cline, whose boyfriend recently gave her a box of tools for Valentine's Day. "Nobody told us we had to be bodybuilders," said Ms.

Brummert. A pipe wrench helped the women complete their project the next day. "It cost us all of 90 cents," said Miss Cline. LeDonne was teaching a kayaking course at Deer Lakes a few years ago when a woman in the class discovered his occupation. She suggested the home repairs class, first offered last year at the high school but canceled because of lack of interest Enough students signed up, however, when CCAC offered it this year.

LeDonne had planned to devote the last class to basic car repairs, at his students' request. But an ominous weather forecast led him to scrap the idea, relieving him of having to show the women how to change a flat tire. "Once they leam, they won't want to do it, anyhow."
