Oct. 24, 1976 Fusina Riddles West Virginia Kubacki Directs Harvard Victory Over Princeton in league play and 24 -l-irV tiffed ft 4 in the half, the Lions quickly used Fusina completions of 27 yards to Tom Donovan and 13 yards to Scott Sitzkee to get to the Mountaineer three. Fusina scored a play later. Aided by a pair of West Virginia fumbles and two pass interceptions, the Lions scored the final time with 55 seconds to go in the third quarter.

West Virginia's first scoring opportunity didn't come until the final six minutes of the game when Bill McKen-zie missed a 48-yard field goal attempt. Not surprisingly, the Lions completely dominated the statistics, piling up 410 yards total offense to just 187 for the Mountaineers, who have managed only one tie with the Lions since 1955. Manhandled by the bigger and more aggressive Penn State defense, West Virginia's offensive unit could net just 75 yards on 38 rushing attempts while the Lions picked up 147 yards on 39 attempts. Mat Sehey, Penn State's leading ground gainer in the first three games before being sidelined with an injury, rushed for 43 yards on 14 carries to lead the Lions. Junior Lee Donell had 31 yards on eight carries to lead the Mountaineers.

(AP) Quarterback Chuck Fusina riddled the West Virginia secondary for 201 passing yards and two touchdowns yesterday afternoon as surging Penn State defeated the Mountaineers for the 18th straight time, 33-0. Fusina threw first half scoring passes of seven yards to running back Steve Geise and 15 yards to tight end Mick Shuler and then scored another touchdown himself from a yard out as the Nit-tany Lions powered their ay to a 26-0 halftime lead and then breezed from there for the victory.

Scoring their third straight victory and fourth of the season in seven games, the Nittany Lions dominated the game. West Virginia's only serious scoring threat came in the last minute of the game when the Mountaineers got as dose as the Lions' five-yard line, but substitute quarterback Rich Duggan was sacked on the final two plays of the game to assure West Yriginia's first home-field shutout in 13 seasons. West Virginia's pass defense was top-rated in NCAA statistics entering the game, but it didn't take long for Fusina to start connecting against the WVU secondary. He threw a 39-yard board in the second period when Tiger linebacker Paul McKeon picked off a Kubacki pass at niidfield. Seven plays later halfback Bobby Isom took a pitchout and went four yards for a score.

Mike Lynch booted a 35-yard field goal midway through the second period to put Harvard ahead, 17-7. Princeton came within three points early in the fourth period when quarterback Kirby Lockhart hit tight end Todd Jacobson on a seven yard pass for a touchdown. Harvard defensive end Bob Baggott recovered a Lock-hard fumble midway through the fourth period to shut off a final Princeton scoring drive. Lynch booted his second field goal with seconds left in the final quarter to seal the Harvard win. Harvard is now 4-1 in Ivy League play and 5-1 overall, while Princeton drops to 2-2 The Associated Press PRINCETON Quarterback Kubacki directed Harvard, to two first period touchdowns yesterday to spark the Crimson to a 20-14 win over Princeton.

On its first series. Harvard drove to the Princeton 48 before being forced to punt. ivy Princeton back Kevin Hag-erty fielded the punt and gave the ball to Jerry Peacock on a reverse, but Peacock fumbled the ball. Harvard recovered on the Princeton three and halfback Tommy Winn went for the score. Harvard scored again on its second series, with Kubacki directing an eleven play, 55- yard drive capped by an eight yard pass from Kubacki to tight end Bob McDcrmott.

Fighting Irish Halt South Carolina, 13-6 Manges, Raba Lead Maryland To 30-3 Win The Associated Press DURHAM, N.C. Quarterback Mark Manges threw two touchdown passes to Bob Raba and scored once himself to lead sixth-ranked Maryland to a 30-3 victory over Duke yesterday in an Atlantic Coast Conference football game. Atlantic Coast iThe victory was a giant step for the unbeaten Terps in their bid for the ACC championship.

With four games remaining, the Terps close out against ACC rivals Clemson and Virginia and will be heavily favored. Maryland took the opening kickoff and rolled 79 yards in 14 plays, capped by George Scott's plunging over from the one. The Terps ran the margin to 13-0 in the second quarter on an 11-yard pas from Manges to Raba. The score was set up when linebacker Mike Miller recovered quarterback Mike Dunn's fumble on the Duke 29. The Blue Devils got their only score midway through the second period when Vince Musco kicked a 46-yard field goal.

Maryland, 7-0 for the season, ran the margin to 23-3 in the third quarter when Mike Sochke kicked a 36-yard field goal. The Terp's final touchdown came with 4:12 left in the third quarter when Manges went over from the one. The drive capped a 54-yard drive in nine plays. yards in 32 carries, including more than yards following Browner's pass interception in the closing minutes, which iced the game for the Irish. Ten first-quarter points were all Notre Dame needed, but the Irish defense had to come up with several big plays to stop the fired-up Gamecocks before a sellout crowd which included President Ford.

Hunter's 181 yards rushing counted for 32 yards more than the entire South Carolina offense could get. In all, Notre Dame rushed 52 times for 224 yards. The six points by South Carolina matched the total that Notre Dame had given up in its previous four games. Irish ahead 10-0 with four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Reeve kicked a second field goal, a 30-yarder, with 5:08 left in the first half to put Notre Dame ahead 13-0 and the Gamecocks got their only three first-half points with two seconds left on a 49-yard field goal by Britt Parrish.

The only scoring in the second half was a 35-yard field goal by Parrish with 9:47 remaining as the Gamecocks outscored the Irish 3-0 in the final two quarters and held Notre Dame to four first downs. The Gamecocks dominated the second half, picking up 12 first downs, but could not get any more points on the scoreboard. COLUMBIA, SC. (AP) Notre Dame freshman Willard Browner scored on a nine-yard pass from Rick Slager in the first quarter and his brother, Jim Browner, intercepted a pass to stop a South Carolina drive in the closing minutes as the Fighting Irish defeated the Gamecocks 13-6 in an intersectional college football game yesterday afternoon. The victory was Notre Dame's fifth in a row and left the 12th-ranked visitor's with a 5-1 record.

It was the 19th-ranked Gamecock's first home loss as South Carolina fell to 5-3 for the season. Notre Dame's Al Hunter rushed for 181 Notre Dame wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, driving 80 yards in 11 plays after receiving the opening kickoff. The drive was capped by Slager's nine-yard pass to Browner with 10: 15 left in the first quarter. The touchdown pass was the fourth completion in a row for Slager who tossed a 24-yarder to Dan Keleher and passes of 18 and seven yards to Ken MacAfee. After an exchance of punts, the Irish took over at their own 48 and Slager tossed a 20-yard screen pass to Hunter, and two plays later Mark McLane went 13 yards to the Gamecock 19.

The drive stalled and Dave Reeve kicked a 37 yard field goal to put the PROVIDENCE, R.I. -Wally Shields scored two second half touchdowns, one on a 25 yard burst up the middle, as Brown rallied for a 28-18 football victory yesterday over Holy Cross. The Bruins, plagued by errors throughout the game, returned after intermission and quickly proceeded on their first drive to overcome the Crusaders 7-6 halftime lead. On their initial drive of the third period, the Bruins marched from their 25 in 11 plays with Shields darting into the end zone from two yards out. That put Brown in the lead fur good.

Holy Cross jumped in front on halfback Dave Nanglc's 50-yard run after the Crusaders recovered a fumbled handoff at midfield in the first period. Brown scored for the first time when quarterback Paul Michalko went off left tackle for two yards in the second period. However, the attempted conversion kick failed and Holy Cross held a 7-6 lead. ITHACA, N.Y. Dartmouth, paced by the powerful running of Sam Coffey, rolled to an easy 35-0 victory over host Cornell in college football action here yesterday.

The defeat was the Big Red's worst home performance in 41 years, dating back to Cornell's 54-0 loss to Princeton in 1935. The Green raced to a 28-0 halftime lead. Dartmouth scored on its first possession, moving 80 yards on 16 plays, all rushes. Coffey, who ran for 52 of the yards, capped the drive with a three-yard jaunt. Rick Low cry added his first of five extra points.

Cornell had two scoring opportunities before the second Green score. The Red moved to the Dartmouth 21, on a 25-yard pass play from Jim llofher to Ramon McEnaney. The drive was thwarted, and a 38-yard field goal went wide. A minute later, Cornell's Don Verstecg fell on a Green fumble, but a pass interception by Dartmouth's Dave VanVliet halted the Hed try. PHILADELPHIA Junior halfback John Pagliaro carried the ball 33 times for 87 yards.

Tying a Yale record for game carries, and scored all three Yale touchdowns as Yale rolled over Penn 21-7 in Ivy League football Saturday. Yale's first score came half way through the second quarter after Yale ground out 75 yards in eight plays, including a 16-yard run by senior fullback Mike South-worth. Pagliaro took a pitchout from senior quarterback Stone Phillips and scored on an 18-yard dash. Shreds Syracuse Surprises Temple WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Andy Hitt's last-minute 36-yard desperation pass to split end Andre Greer gave Virginia a come-from-behind IS-17 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over a stunned Wake Forest team here yesterday afternoon.

The win gave Virginia its first victory in 16 games, snapping the nation's longest losing streak. The Cavaliers' defense held on as Wake Forest drove 56 yards to the Virginia 27, where Bob Hely missed a 44-yard field goal attempt with six seconds remaining in the game. Wake Forest appeared to have clinched a 17-12 win when the Cavaliers took possession on their 38 with time running out. But Hitt completed a 21-yard pass to flanker Joe Sroba, who went out of bounds at the Deacon 36, setting up Hitt's scoring bomb on the following play. a one-yard touchdown run from fullback Jim Sessler and sophomore Dave Jacobs obs ended the Orange scoring with a 27-yard field goal.

KINGSTON, R. I. Halfback Roger Strandberg ran for 103 yards and three touchdowns yesterday in powering Boston University to a 35-0 upset victory over Rhode Island in a Yankee Conference football game. Fashioning their first conference victory and only their second in six over-all starts this season, the BU Terriers took command at the outset and wrecked the Rhode Island defense. The Terriers put together two long drives to set up a pair of nine-yard touchdown runs by quarterback Greg Geiger and Strandberg in the first period.

Bruce Rich booted a 44-yard field goal for a 16-0 halftime lead. The Associated Press SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Sophomore quarterback Bill Hurley surprised Temple with an unusually effective passing attack yesterday to East drive Syracuse University to a 24-16 college football victory. Hurley connected on 11 of 20 passes for 193 yards and one touchdown. None of his passes was intercepted.

Going into the Temple game, the converted tailback had completed only seven passes for 110 yards in the' previous five games. Hurley completed six passes to Don McGee for 108 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown pass. Junior tailback Bob Avery led all rushers with 98 yards on 17 carries, including a 49-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Syracuse got Art Smedberg passed seven yards to Mike Lonneman for the final touchdown in the fourth period. VILLANOVA, Pa.

Tony Serge's two-yard plunge just before halftime proved to be the game winner yesterday as Villanova's ground powerhouse rolled over Youngs-town State 34-14 in college football. The Wildcats amassed 379 yards on the ground and tallied five touchdowns, all on runs, including two from Charley Gross. Villanova's Ken Diminick opened the scoring on a three-yard dive early in the first quarter. Gross scored his first on a six-yard run with a minute left in the period. Youngstown came alive midway through the second quarter when quarterback Cliff Straudt carried it in from the five, but Serge RALEIGH, N.C.

Quarterback Johnny Evans passed and ran North Carolina State to a 38-21 victory over Clemson in an Atlantic Coast Conference football battle yesterday. 1 Evans scored for the Wolf pack on runs of 13 and 2 yards. He set up another score with a run of 55 yards and then passed 13 yards to Elijah Marshall for a touchdown. Evans was ably abetted by fullback Ted Brown, who scored touchdowns on runs of 1 and 30 yards. Texas A Rice Into Pieces answered for Villanova to put the game out of reach and leave the Wildcats with a 21-7 halftime lead.

ORONO, Maine Lehigh University piled up 360 yards on the ground, including 174 by senior fullback Rod Gardner, to blank the University of Maine 24-0 before a Homecoming football crowd here yesterday. The Engineers scored in the first quarter on a 30-yard field goal by Greg Pierog, then boosted their lead to 10-0 after halfback Dave Aprill, who rushed for a total of 114 yards, scored on a four-yard run. In the fourth quarter, Lehigh put together touchdown drives of 51 and 70 yards respectively. The first drive, completed in 11 plays, ended when Gardner burst up the middle for three yards. WEST POINT, N.Y.

-Quarterback Joe O'Brien and running back Anthony Brown recorded first-half touchdowns yesterday, starting Boston College to a 17-10 win over Army in college football. O'Brien tallied on a four-yard keeper to Hive the Eagles a 7-3 lead in the second quarter. Wide receiver Dave Zum-bach passed 24 yards to Brown on a fake field goal attempt with no time remaining in the first half to make it 14-3 and Boston College was never threatened after that. Tim Moorman added field goals of 17 and 34 yards and Glen Capriola scored on a three-yard, fourth-quarter run to complete the scoring for the Eagles, 5-1. BROOKLINE, Mass.

-Running back George Cap-padona ran for touchdowns in the first and fourth quarters to lead visiting New Hampshire to a 35-21 football win over Northeastern Saturday. Cappadona opened the scoring for the Wildcats with a one-yard plunge in the first period, followed by five-yard scoring jaunts by teammates Tim Pindry and quarterback Jeff Allen. But the Huskies' Chris Brawley put the hosts on the board when he scored from one yard out on a trap play over center. UTEP opened with a strong running attack and scored first when quarterzack Steve Smith bolted over from the one with 3: 50 left in the first period. Less than two minutes later Graham handed off to running back Ron Harris, who streaked upfield 59 yards to the Miner nine before being hauled down by tornerback Ken Yates.

Graham cracked over for his first score two plays later from the five. CSU's Harry Washington took a Terry Walker punt 59 yards to the UTEP 14 to set up Graham' second score, in the second period. Associared Press South Carolina quarterback Ron Bass fires pass as Notre Dame's Bob Golic and Ross Browner (89) combine to hit him down in first quarter of game won by Notre Dame, 1 3-6. Lauda Battles To Keep Crown 45-22 to maintain first place in the Western Athletic Conference. Cousins, a sophomore who took over as the starter three games ago, scored on runs of 10, 4, 4 and one yards and directed a quick-hitting wishbone offense that accounted for 465 yards on the ground.

Wyoming tried only two passes, but one was a 10-yard touchdown toss from backup quarterback Don Calyton to tight end Walter Howard. The Cowboys, 4-0 in the VVAC and 6-1 on the year, also scored on a four-yard run by Clayton and a 32-yard field goal and six extra points by Dan Christopulos. Utah gained only 95 yards rushing, but quarterbacks Don Hagemann and Pat Deg-man completed 18 of 34 passes for 255 yards. Hagemann threw scoring passes of 41 yards to flanker Jack Steptoe and 20 yards to fullback Mike Moseley. The Associated Press COLLEGE STATION, Tex.

Massive George Woodard shredded Rice's porous defense for four touchdowns yesterday to give Texas a 57-34 Southwest Confer-Far West ence football victory over the Owls and their premier passer Tommy Kramer. It was most explosive offensive production since 1961 when the Aggies blanked Trinity 55-0. Woodard, a 6-0, 240-pound sophomore battered for 188 yards on 29 carries and scored on runs of 15, one, five and 9 yards. He also raced 38 yards on a screen pass to set up an field goal. Kramer, the nation's leading passer, riddled 4th ranked pass defense for three touchdowns and scored twice on one-yard plunges that were set up by his passing.

II; finished with 24 completions In 59 attempts for 376 yards, far above his average of 282 yards per game. quarterback David Walker, in his second start this season, scored once and pllk-d up 173 yards total offense before ledving the game early in the fourth period. PROVO, Utah Gifford Nielsen passed for five touchdowns while senior tailback Jeff Blanc rushed for another and became Brigham Young University's career scoring leader as BYU defeated interstate rival Utah State 45 to 14 yesterday. Nielsen completed 28 of 48 passes for 408 yards and in the process broke the National Collegiate Athletic Association single-game season passing mark which he set last week against Southern Mississippi. He had 455 total yards in that game.

Blanc scored BYU's first touchdown to become the career scoring leader, taking a pitch out from Nielsen and sweeping around right end to score with 6:08 remaining in the first quarter. Blanc took over the scoring title from former BYU tailback Pete Van Valkenberg. Blanc has now scored 168 points, including 28 touchdowns. Unable to gain any substantial yardage on the ground, Nieslen went to his specialty, the pass, in the second quarter. Nielsen guided BYU to three scores in a five-minute stretch aided by two fine catches in the end zone.

Ohio State defeated Purdue, 24-3. 10. Georgia played last night. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. Quarterback Marty Crosby led Citadel's offensive machine tt a 26-7 military academy victory over the Air Force yesterday in college football.

Although Crosby and slashing running back Andrew Johnson were potent weapons, Citadel's defensive team actually dominated the game. Johnson, a 185-pound senior, scored the first touchdown of the game midway in the first quarter onaa three-yard run, capping a 27-yard drive after a poor Air Force punt. That was about all the offense the Bulldogs needed. The Citadel defense kept Air Force on its side of the field for most of the first half as defensive ends Randy Johnson and Bob Tillman and noseguard David Sol-lazzo sacked Falcon quarterbacks nine times to stall several potential drives. Quarterback Mart-Cousins tied a school record with four touchdowns and gained 104 yards on 15 carries yesterday as Wyoming smashed Utah GOTEMBA, Japan (AP) -Mario Andretti sat in the pole position for today's Japan Formula One Grand Prix, but figured to take a back seat as defending world champion Niki Lauda of Austria battled to keep his crown from Britain's Junies Hunt. A crowd of more than 100,000 was expected to watch the 16th and final race of the year for auto racing supremacy in 1976. The 27-year-old Lauda needed to finish ahead of Hunt in the 198.87-mile race in order to retain the three-point stan-ings lead he carried into the event. The threut of rain hung over the first Formula One race to be held in Japan one to be contested by 24 drivers from 12 countries who qualified their races over this 2.651-mile track about 90 miles west of Tokyo. Liuda was to drive a Ferrari 312 T-2 against Hunt's McLaren M23 under overcast skies at the Fuji International Speedway Circuit.

Hunt managed a slight advantage in the duel by gaining a front-row spot with Aiidretti Andretti, the Nazareth, veteran, wasn't overly conlidciit about his chances in the race. He said after taking the pole in qualifying Saturday that "I sweated so much today in winning the pole position that I just dun't know about the race." He admitted, however, that "the course condition is much better than it was." BOZEMAN, Mont. Quarterback Paul Dennehy scored twice and threw a scoring pass to Bryan Flaig to lead Montana State 29-14 over Idaho yesterday in a football game between Big Sky Conference frontrunners. The win gave Montana State undisputed possession of first place in the league with a 4-0 mark and dropped Idaho to 22-1. Dennehy scored his club's first touchdown on a one-yard keeper, and his seven-yard scamper in the third quarter yanked the Bobcats out of a jam after Idaho had pulled within three points.

Idaho's classy uar terback, Craig Juntu-nen, scored both Vandal six-pointers on sparkling runs of 27 and 10 yards, but was injured early in third period. MSU tailback Tom Kostrba raced 40 yards for insurance in the fourth period. 1 FORT COLLINS, Colo. Quarterback Dun Graham scored two touchdowns and Colorado State's defense held Texas-El Paso scoreless for the last three periods yesterday as the Rams took a 28-7 Western Athletic Conference football victory. It was UTEP's fifth conference loss in a row and left the Miners 1-6 for the season.

The Rains are 4-3 over-all and 1-2 in league action..
