ASBURY PARK PRESS I THURSDAY, JUNE 19,2003 PANORAMA MOVIE TIMETABLE Mi, depressimn Former broker Paul Mecurio merges real life and laughs two weeks later. He asked Mecurio to send material. "There was nothing as exciting to hear my first joke on the Tonight Mecurio said. "It's interesting. I didn't come from money.

I'm just some middle-class guy, but who ends up on Wall Street being a part of a number of major deals that are on the front page of the Wall Street Journal. But nothing was as powerful as hearing my first joke, which I got paid $50 for, air on 'The Tonight I created that out of the ether. I was sucked into comedy after that." Mecurio, who will perform today through Sunday at Rascals in Ocean Township, brought two notebooks to work: a deal book and a joke book. "When I would be scribbling madly at a meeting they thought I was writing about what was at hand, however, it was jokes." At that time, Mecurio embarked on a secret double life. By day, he would work in the high-powered world of Wall Street; at night, he took his chances on the New York comedy scene.

"It got to be really difficult," Mecurio said. "I was like an addict. I worked 100 hours a week sometimes, and I remember during some down-time at 7 p.m. I took a cab to a club, messed my hair up. I was getting ready to go on, and someone in the bar was getting stabbed.

I went on and said, 'I always wanted to go on after a The guy who was cut got mad at me. He threw a balled-up wad of paper filled York and go to Boston, where I told my girlfriend to go to, since they have a good stand-up scene." Mecurio's lifestyle changed completely. He visited friends in their huge Greenwich, homes and left depressed. "I literally would have to go the bathroom just to pull myself together," Mecurio said. "I could have had that life if I wanted it" The IRS noticed that he had a dramatic decline in revenue and a large increase in fast-food receipts.

"I ate about $2,000 worth of junk being on the road and they called me in. I explained my situation and they asked if I was crazy. I explained that I was just passionate. I just felt worse than ever." A friend called Mecurio in 1995 and asked him to work at his firm. Mecurio agreed and swore off stand-up.

"But like an addict, I was back onstage in seven months," Mecurio said. "It was the same thing again. I lied to my girlfriend and didn't tell anyone." Within a year, Mecurio quit his job and focused on stand-up comedy. He became one of the original writers of "The Daily Show" in 1996 and married his longtime, long-suffering girlfriend. After winning an Emmy and a Peabody for his work on "The Daily Show," he toils part-time for Jon Stewart's send-up of the news.

Mecurio, the father of a 4-year-old son, is constantly hitting the stand-up trail and hopes his show becomes a reality. "Anything can happen," Mecurio said. "Just look at my life." COMEDY By ED CONDRAN CORRESPONDENT Some people's lives are so Interesting that they could be fodder for a TV show. Paul Mecurio's story might just merit that. The New York comedian is working on a sitcom that would be based on his life story.

If the show is only half as interesting as Mecurio's rise, the program will be worth watching. While growing up in Providence, R.I., Mecurio and his siblings worked at his mother's furniture store. "My mother didn't have three children, she had three employees," Mecurio cracked. "We were all expected to work at the store." After graduating from the University of Rhode Island in 1983, Mecurio went to law school at Georgetown. "I had to see the world after spending my whole life in a small town," Mecurio said.

After graduating in 1989, he became a corporate Wall Street attorney and investment banker. "I was working on mergers and acquisitions and making some really good money. I bought a nice Manhattan apartment. I had suits from Barney's. It wasn't bad." During his third year with the company in 1992, Mecurio was invited by a client to catch a private show by Jay Leno, who was about to take over "The Tonight Show" from Johnny Carson.

Mecurio, who had been writing jokes on the side for his own amusement, not only chose to attend, he printed out 15 pages of wisecracks. "After Leno performed, I sheepishly went up to him and said that I write jokes and that if he were interested, I would like to sell him some jokes for 'The Tonight Leno took the jokes and surprised Mecurio by calling him 'I was sucked into says Paul Mecurio, who performs at Rascals in Ocean Township today through Sunday. during my act and she saw them and thought I was cheating on her," Mecurio said. "I told her that the notes had to do with deal code names." In 1993, Mecurio's dad passed away unexpectedly and he took a leave of absence and returned to Providence to help his mother. After seven months, Mecurio returned to Manhattan.

"My mother had no use for me," Mecurio said. "It was like being 12 again. I had to go." Shortly after coming back to the law firm, Mecurio quit and decided to try his luck as a comedian. He moved from his fancy, upper-West-Side digs to a rooming house in New Ro-chelle. "It was just like those film noirs," Mecurio said.

"It was dark and depressing. I had to share a bathroom. I had a hot plate. But I could slip into New PAUL MECURIO 8:30 p.m. today, 8:30 and 10:45 p.m.
