Manalapan hoped to repeat last year's top-five finish, but was in the middle of the pack. "They had a little trouble finding their marks, but they bowled well," Manalapan coach Diana Smith said.

After finishing fourth in the Shore Conference North Division this year, St. John Vianney coach Aado Kommendant said, he was pleased with yesterday's effort. "We didn't do too well in our division," Kommendant said, "but I told them they could redeem themselves. They came here and had a good outing." "As a team, we shot really well," St John Vianney bowler Brian Patoe said. "We had a chance to advance after the second game, but we blew it in the third game.

It got very hot in here and the lanes dried up because of the heat." for a state tournament berth with a effort in the second game. But the final game was Monmouth Regional's poorest, and the team finished fifth with 2,803 points. "That second game was the highest we ever scored in a couple of years," said Monmouth Regional captain Kevin Kawas, who rolled a 582 series. Other Shore Conference teams competing yesterday were Middle-town North, St. John Vianney, Ocean, Neptune, Wall, Manasquan, Keyport, Long Branch, Matawan, CBA, Manalapan and Middletown South.

Wall, after winning the Shore Conference South Division, had lofty expectations. "We folded under the pressure," said Wall bowler Mike Quarg. "We got discouraged in the first game and it just carried over." Wall's Jeni Loesch (701 series), who competes with the boys team, Monmouth Regional finishes fifth, but only the top three are eligible for the state championship. Hwt: O'Brien Adams 12-10 (OT); Filosa Mullins 4-1. blanked tying Maple Shade's Josh Moore for the ninth and final spot in the individual competition. The best game of the day went to sophomore Adam Patterson of Burlington County Institute of Technology, Medford Township. He came within two pins of his first high school perfect game in the third game. Patterson's 288 stood as the tournament game high and propelled him into second place for high series at 672.

Patterson, who bowled his first 300 game last month, will be making his first appearance in the state finals. Shawnee's Wayne Shannon, a freshman, earned the high series with a 705. "I knew I could do it after my first game," said Shannon, who bowled a 258 in his first game. "That was my best ever. This is just great for the team and for me." Cup bids BRIDGEWATER-RARITAN 6, RED BANK CATHOLIC 0: Pat McCullough's hat trick and John Fallone's fourth shutout led Bridgewater-Raritan in the Mclnnes Cup final at South Mountain Arena.

The Caseys were outshot 31-10 as the Panthers extended their winning streak to 21 games. Bridgewa-ter has not lost since falling 4-3 to Red Bank Catholic in December. That defeat came just two days after Bridgewater pummeled the Caseys 8-0. McCullough, part of a first line that includes Ron Bartolonzo and Greg Wester, scored consecutive goals 2 minutes apart to give Bridgewater a 3-0 lead late in the first period. "The first period was key," Bridgewater coach Dennis Doherty said.

"We came out very hard, very fast, and took the initiative right off the bat." The Caseys had trouble clearing their zone as Fallone lowered his goals-against average below 1.50. TR East, RBC fall in we'd get somewhere in the states. We knew the sectional was going to be tough competition." Eastern's all-junior lineup is making its third appearance in the state finals. "These guys didn't even bowl their average today, but they played as a team. That was the difference," Mangus said.

"Last year, we saw the scores of the early group and figured we could just bowl our average and qualify. "That's when we got knocked out of the team competition." Toms River North won the morning session of 15 teams by bowling 958-909-896 2,763. But the afternoon group out-bowled the Mariners, pushing them into fourth place 13 pins behind Shawnee. Dave Kay led the Mariners with a 615 series and Dave Cozad rolled a 573. Kay advances to the states, dered three first-period goals, one of them shorthanded.

Elkhatib stopped 20 of the next 22 shots, but the last goal he surrendered broke Toms River's back. The Raiders used a pair of Jeff Rothman goals to close a 4-1 deficit to 4-3 just 1:04 into the third period. Old Bridge picked up consecutive minor penalties at 10:30 and 8:11, but Toms River East failed to convert on the power play. The Raiders then gave Old Bridge a two-man advantage, which Toms River East killed. But just as Anthony Giacobbe was skating out of the penalty box, John Horbal hit the back of the net on a right-circle blast that gave Old Bridge a 5-3 edge with 4:30 remaining.

Horbal's goal proved to be paramount because Giacobbe scored with 41 seconds remaining, just seconds after Elkhatib was pulled for an extra skater. Old Bridge was outshot 31-29. By GREG TUFARO STAFF WRITER WEST ORANGE Toms River High School East rallied from a three-goal deficit to win the Hand-chen Cup a year ago. But the Raiders could not dig themselves out of an identical hole in a 5-4 loss to Old ICE HOCKEY Bridge in the mmtmmmmmmm American Conference A Division tournament final at South Mountain Arena yesterday. Toms River East was playing without first-line center Sean O'Leary and first-string goaltender Jameson Cullen, who led the team to a 5-4 victory over River Dell in last year's Handchen Cup final.

O'Leary, the team's leading scorer with 20 goals and 27 assists, was sitting out a one-game disqualification imposed in an 8-5 semifinal victory over Indian Hills. Cullen was kicked off the team for disciplinary reasons last week. Goalie Rory Elkhatib surren- 135: Vieira d. Savage 11-1; Wittman d. Barowski 4-3.
