JOSEPH (HAMMONT0N) 28, MARIST 16: Behind the running of seniors Ed Silipena and Rob Mauriello and junior Carmine Avellino, St. Joseph exploded for 203 yards to defeat Marist 28-16 and win the state Parochial I championship at the College of New Jersey. St. Joseph got on the board first with a 1-yard sneak by Mauriello. But it only took Marist 12 seconds to strike back, as Riley Jefferson ran 61 yards for a touchdown.

But Marist would score all its points in the first half. Marist led at the half 16-14. MAINLAND 14, PENNSAUKEN 7: Quarterback Jeff Boyd scored on a 7-yard keeper with 2:12 remaining in regulation to give the Mustangs the NJSIAA South Jersey Group III crown at the College of New Jersey. Pennsauken took a 7-0 lead in the third quarter when Cliff Horsey connected with Clinton Tabb for a 6-yard TD pass. But Mainland tied the game on Dean Jones' 18-yard run.

The Associated Press contributed to this story and one first down, the score was 20-0 with a minute left in the opening period. And while the Warriors' special teams were busy doing their thing, the defense was equally overwhelming, holding potent Hamilton to 174 total yards. Overall, Franklin recovered five fumbles and held highly-regarded quarterback Greg Muckerson (7-of-18, 82 yards in the air, 32 yards rushing) in check. HOB0KEN 33, PASSAIC VALLEY 12: Junior Keon Walker carried 19 times for 164 yards and three touchdowns Sunday to lead Hoboken past Passaic Valley 33-12 to win its third straight North Jersey Section 1, Group III championship at Giants Stadium. Walker broke loose for scores of 65, 28, and 18 yards during the battle of the unbeatens.

Hoboken struck paydirt on its first possession, on a 31-yard halfback option pass from Mike Forcum to Juan Lopez. It was the Red Wings' only pass of the day. Lopez also intercepted a pass to thwart the Hornets at the start of the fourth quarter. MORRIS KNOLLS 36, SHABAZZ 20: Bryan Pojanowski ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns Sunday to lead Morris Knolls to a 36-20 win over Shabazz and capture the North Jersey Section 2, Group III championship at Giants Stadium. By JOHN HALEY STAFF WRITER EAST RUTHERFORD As the Franklin High School football team began preparing for its showdown with Hamilton West in the lSIAA Central Jersey Group III championship, there was only one facet of its game that wasn't STATE sharply tuned ROUNDUP sPecial teams- aaaaaaaaaaaaaa The Warriors put an extra emphasis on their special teams play this week and it certainly showed at Giants Stadium last night as two fumble recoveries on kickoffs and two blocked punts led to a 26-3 decision and the CJ Group III title.

Playing in its third straight title game, Franklin (10-1) won its sixth sectional title and second in three years. The Warriors had won the crown in 1994. Hamilton West lost for the first time in 11 games this season. "I can't say enough about our special teams play and our defense," said Franklin coach Joe George, who is now 38-11-2 after five seasons at the helm. "Our special teams hadn't been performing that well, but the kids made a commitment this week." Hamilton West had to be stunned.

The wishbone tjiat allowed Hillsborough to bring an undefeated record into the Central Jersey Group IV title game was shut down rather handily in Middletown North's 33-8 rout at Giants Stadium. Since no teams in the Shore Conference use the wishbone, Middletown North may need to wait until next December to stop it cold again.

Shawn Mayer, the highly touted junior quarterback for Hillsborough, with over 2,000 total yards entering the game, was essentially denied the opportunity to do something constructive with the football. Mayer failed to complete a pass and carried the ball a mere 15 times for 65 yards. And that was precisely the idea for Middletown North defensive end Todd Gallagher and his cohorts to make Mayer think twice about keeping the ball on the option. "We knew their tight end would block me, but my job was to still somehow get the quarterback to pitch the ball," said Gallagher, a 5-11, 200-pound senior. "If he cut in, the linebackers would be there, but the idea was to get the ball out of his hands.

It worked almost every time." Middletown North coach Mike Galos credited defensive coordinator Al Tirpack with devising the wishbone-snapping defense. "Our kids carried out Al's plans to the letter," Galos said. "We had our ends, safeties and linebackers going to the quarterback. (Mayer) didn't really break a long run all day. We saw tape of them and he would always eventually break one, then break another and another." Half of Mayer's six throws were caught, but by the wrong team.
