We hit all the time in my basement." Four years ago Daubert became the first freshman to play regularly for 18-year coach Bill Frank. "I just saw the potential there," said Frank, who placed Daubert in the outfield because a senior was at short, then moved him to the infield the next year. Daubert is also the Raiders' closer. "Even though he was young, he was far ahead By TONY GRAHAM STAFF WRITER JAKE DAUBERT, a Toms River East senior, rises with the sun. "I usually wake up about 6:15," said Daubert, a record-setting baseball player and a National Honor Society member, of his school-day routine.

"During the season I'm looking toward the game all the time," he said. "But I always concentrate on my school work. You've got to have discipline. A baseball player has got to to be smart. "I think that helps me out because I'm focused.

I'm kind of like a perfectionist." Mary Lou Blake, academic adviser to the Raiders baseball team who was Daubert's English teacher last year, said there's a spark about him. "He can reach down academically and get the job Predictions and team capsules. D9 done when he knows there's a lot to be done, just as I've seen him do on the baseball field," Blake said. "He's a humble kid, pleasant, a gentleman. Yet he's definitely a real, live kid." In three years of varsity play, Daubert has energized Raiders baseball.

A sweet-swinging lefty, Daubert owns three career school records and four season marks, including last year's .506 batting average. Nine other career marks are within his reach this season. His father, Jack, coached Daubert in Little League and now coaches his younger brothers, Drew and TRE freshman Luke. of other people his age, Frank said. "It helped me grow up," Daubert said of his elevation to varsity as a freshman.

"With a coach like Mr. Frank, it's all discipline. He teaches you life lessons. That's his philosophy. He's not just all high Please see Daubert, page H10.
