Montanaro, starting his 21st year as head coach at RBC, needs just two wins to reach his 100th career victory. His record now stands at 98-85-5.

"The important thing is to be competitive and to win as often as we deserve to," Montanaro said. "Athletic success requires solid performance, perseverance and teamwork. But the important thing is not so much how well those qualities surface now, but how evident they will be 10 years from now in business and family life." Montanaro, who teaches Algebra and Geometry at Red Bank Catholic, play every game perform the crucial job of opening the holes for Chater from his fullback position. He also plays linebacker on defense. The quarterbacking chores will be handled by sophomore Bill McCarthy, who started five games there as a freshman.

He and Koch took over last year when Brian Walker fractured his leg in the opening game of the season. Other returning players Montanaro is especially counting on are two-way linemen Peter Montanaro, the coach's nephew, Jim Grant, who has all the skills, and split end Quinton Mitchell. "We lost some starters from last year," Montanaro said, "but we have a good returning nucleus with experience. Our primary worry will be depth. We'll suit up 33-35 players.

I just want them all to play to the best of their ability and the rewards will be there." 19 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEW size, good speed," Montanaro said. "He has a natural instinct for the ball. He goes and gets it." Zimmerman plays tight end and linebacker. "He's a tough kid and a good football player," Montanaro said, "but his greatest asset is that he works hard all the time." Krieger is a two-way tackle. "He's got great strength and is very adept at facing all kinds of situations," Montanaro said.

"He's always on top of his game." Chater, running back and safety, is a three-year starter who did the bulk of the ball carrying last year. "He's the complete running back," Montanaro said. "He's got excellent running skills and is also a very good receiver." Senior Josh Kendle, son of Asbury Park football coach Jesse Kendle, will hasthe dual role of head coach and of- fensive coordinator. The mastery of the X's and O's drawn and followed in both pursuits, according to Montanaro, should produce the hard-work ethic that portends success. Red Bank Catholic shifts to a Class North schedule this year after two years in Class South.

Prior to that the Caseys played in Class North. "It'll be a totally new experience for us," Montanaro said. "We'll be playing teams we haven't played in years, or haven't played at all. It kind of evens out, however, since we don't know them and they don't know us." The important thing to Montanaro is being ready to play. "Athletes, in a sense, should be more concerned with themselves than the teams they play," he said.

"If you aren't prepared, you aren't going to do well." ii We lost some starters from last year. But we have a good returning nucleus with experience. Our primary worry will be depth. LOU MONTANARO RBC coach Seniors Rob Koch, Eric Zimmerman, Eric Krieger and Hussam Chater are the key returnees. Koch, a three-year starter, plays split end and safety.
