She had been bludgeoned to death. The two other active investigations involving the murder of teen-age females have been going on for more than nine years. On Jan. 30, 1974, the body of Suzanne Garden, 14, of Dover Township was found strangled and stabbed in a clearing in a wooded section of Dover Township about a mile from her Gilford Park home. Five weeks later, the body of Cindy Leslie, an 18-year-old Beachwood woman, was found in woods off Highland Parkway in the downtown section of Toms River.

Other active cases include the murders of: Cynthia Leeds, a 21-year-old pregnant woman who was found strangled and stabbed to death in her Brick Township apartment Aug. 26, 1976. She had quit her job two weeks before the slaying. Dorothy McMaster, Route 527, Dover 7, rrr By DANIEL S. CLAY Press Staff Writer TOMS RIVER A number of unsolved Ocean County murders are being reviewpd to see if convicted killer Richard Biegenwald may have been involved, but Ocean County Prosecutor Edward J.

Turnbach won't say if Biegenwald is a suspect. "It is the normal investigative procedure in a case like this to see if there is any connection," Turnbach said, adding, "But I am not in a position to say he is a suspect." Biegenwald, who is being held in Trenton State Prison charged with the murder of an 18-year-old Camden woman, is expected to be indicted in connection with the deaths of three others, including two 17-year-old Ocean County girls. There are at least 13 unsolved murders in Ocean County, but when most of them were committed Biegenwald was serving an 18-year prison term for the 1958 murder of an assistant Hudson County prosecutor. He was paroled in 1975, arrested again for a parole violation in 1977 and finally released in February 1981. One unsolved Ocean County murder that police are looking at carefully is that of Virginia Clayton, a 17-year-old Freehold Township girl whose body was found in a deer pit in Jackson Township Sept.

11. Although her father, John Clayton, says he doesn't believe Biegenwald had anything to do with the slaying, police have said the circumstances surrounding her death are similar to those in other deaths linked to Biegenwald. Monmouth County Prosecutor Alexander D. Lehrer has said he will seek indictments against Biegenwald for the murders of Maria Ciallela, 17, Brick Township; Betsy Bacon, 17, Sea Girt; Deborah Osborne, 17, Seaside Heights, and William J. Ward, 34, North Wildwood.

While the method of operation is similar only in the unsolved Clayton murder, investigators are looking at the other unsolved homicides. Of the 13 unsolved murders, four are inactive cases. The oldest active investigation is 15 years old and involves another 17-year-old iikiv is mi greater uanger wuay wan girl getting into a car with a perfect stranger." Ocean County Prosecutor Edward J. Turnbach. DESPITE THE FACT many parents are adamant in insisting their children never hitchhike, thousands of teen-age girls do, often with tragic results.

An investigation into the deaths of two girls police say may have been murdered by convicted killer Richard Biegenwald has revealed they may have been hitchhiking when they were picked up by their Miller. When the body of Virginia Clayton, a 17-year-old Freehold Township girl, was found last September in a deer pit in Township, police said she was known to be a hitchhiker. On Sept. 21, 1968, the body of 17-year-, old Juliette Linzmayer of Brick Township was found in a branch of the Metedeconk River. She was known to hitchhike around "the area.

In October 1971, the body of Navy Yeoman John A. Reinsch was found in the woods in Barnegat Township. The last time he was seen was by his girl friend, who dropped him off on a highway in Westchester County, N.Y., saw him hitchhiking and saw him get into a car. Capt. William Gallant of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and a veteran of many years of investigations, said a great number of hitchhikers become the victims of various crimes but the only publicity linking a victim to hitchhiking comes when the victim is murdered.

In the current investigation of murders linked to Biegenwald, law enforcement people believe that both Deborah Osborne and Maria Ciallela may have been hitchhiking along Route 88 in Point Pleasant when they were picked up by their killer or killers. Turnbach said investigations of crimes against hitchhiking victims are much more Asbury Park Press In posed photo, a woman tries to hitch a ride on Route 9, Beachwood. (rarest sands of parents became alarmed and frightened. There was at least one killer on the loose, maybe two, and they demanded police crack down on hitchhiking and that schools educate students about the potential danger. A massive manhunt was launched along with the anti-hitchhiking campaign, which saw police from several municipalities in the central part of the county pick up hitchhikers, take them to police stations and notify parents.

The weeks and months passed, and although the murders went unsolved, the furor died down. Police stopped picking up hitchhikers, schools stopped warning students and the practice resumed as strongly as before. Hitchhiking is against the law, but like jaywalking, the law isn't enforced very much. difficult because there is no prior connection between the victim and the perpetrator. In citing the dangers of hitchhiking, Turnbach said, "Responsible people don't pick up hitchhikers.

Who is left but the fringe element?" The most massive anti-hitchhiking campaign in the history of Ocean County took place in early March of 1974 after the body of a Beachwood girl was found near the business area. That was less than five weeks after the discovery of the body of 14-year-old Suzanne Garden in a wooded area less than a mile from her Gilford Park home. Miss Garden had been missing for several days but was last seen alive hitchhiking on Route 37. Nov. 20, 1982, when she left her house on Brooklyn Boulevard to walk to a store to get cigarettes. Lehrer said he believes she was picked up in a car by Biegenwald and killed with two bullets to the head a short time later. Biegenwald is being held in Trenton State Prison in connection with Miss Olesiewicz's murder. Fitzgerald is being held in the Monmouth County, Jail, Freehold Township, where he is reportedly cooperating with police.

Biegenwald' wife, Diane, is being held in the Monmouth County Jail on drug and weapons charges stemming from the raid. Freehold Township resident who was found stabbed to death in a state park in Jackson Township. But John Clayton, Virginia's father, said he doesn't believe Biegenwald was his daughter's killer. Miss Clayton was found stabbed to death Sept. 11 in the Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area.

Police officers investigating the Biegenwald case said a pattern will emerge when the investigation is complete. But all that's known now is that most of the victims were teen-agers walking or hitchhiking alone at night. Miss Ciallella was last seen walking along Route 88 on Halloween night in 1981. Lehrer said she was killed by two bullets to the head shortly after she was picked up by Biegenwald. Miss Osborne was last seen April 5, 1982, at the Idle Hour Bar Lounge, a Point Pleasant bar on Route 88 where she was drinking with a girl friend.

The friend went to the bathroom and when she returned, Miss Osborne was gone. Lehrer said Biegenwald picked up Miss Osborne hitchhiking and later stabbed her. Miss Olesiewicz disappeared Aug. 28, 1982, from the Asbury Park boardwalk. She was shot four times in the head and her body dumped behind a fast food restaurant in Ocean Township, Lehrer said.

Ward was slain Sept. 20 or 21 by five small-caliber gunshot wounds to the head Classes Now Forming Ocean County Prosecutor Edward J. Turnbach would not say if the search for bodies would extend to Ocean County. Sources have said there may be additional victims buried in Ocean County and Staten Island, but police will not disclose the source of that information. Police are looking for the body of John Petrone of Brielle, sources have said.

One of these sources said Biegenwald believed Petrone was a police informant.
