The Caseys fell to Westfield, 3-2, in a match that came down to first singles.

After taking the first set 7-6 (7-4) in a tiebreaker, Red Bank Catholic's Dena Tan-enbaum lost the final two sets to Westfield's LexiBorr. Borr won the second set 6-3, and the deciding third set 6-1 to clinch the match for Westfield. Tanenbaum lost to Borr 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 in last year's TOC semifinal matchup. Red Bank Catholic picked up the first point of the match after Rocine Moschella defeated Sam Borr at second singles 6-1, 6-0. Moschella knew the key to her match was to come out strong and stay on the attack.

"I was so focused today," Moschella said. "She (Borr) does a good job of mixing the pace up and frustrating her opponents. "There was something about today, I just stayed focused and played my game." At third singles Westfield's Debbie Wu defeated Jenna Pelle-grino 6-2, 6-1 to take a 2-1 overall lead. Red Bank Catholic's first doubles team came back and evened the score at 2 as Leigh Oliver and Cara McGrath defeated Morgan Murphy and Sarah Murphy 6-1, 6-2. McGrath, a senior, was happy with the way her final match went. "We went out there knowing it was the state final," McGrath said.

"We had to do the best we possibly could and give it our all. We got an early lead, and just stuck to our game." Even with Tanenbaum falling in the deciding match, it's clear her teammates didn't forget the impressive season that she had. Moschella had nothing but praise for Tanenbaum. "Dena has played amazing all season," Moschella said. "There's not many better number ones that we would want on our team.

King has helped the Colonials to a 10-1 record this season. "People talk about the girls that will be incoming freshmen but hearing about them and seeing them perform is totally different," Pusz said. Red Bank Catholic head coach Lynn DiGioia was disappointed with the loss, but happy with how far her team advanced in the tournament. "We knew Westfield was a good team and that it was going to be a close match either way, DiGioia said.

"This team brought me the farthest ever in my 13 years of coaching, I'm proud of them for that." Looking to next season, Red Bank Catholic should enjoy an other successful campaign. "We have all three singles davers returning for next year, and hopefully our young players can step up," DiGioia said. "With that being said, I'm very proud of the run they had this year. Red Bank Catholic (22-2). class, the Colonials have racked up some impressive scores along the way this season. Freehold has scored at least 107 points in seven of their 11 meets this sea son.

"Usually we have a sophomore and two freshmen as our top three scores at our meets," Pusz said. "I usually try to keep three of our top girls in each event. And it could be any combina tion of the gymnasts from either the freshman or sophomore class. That reason has made the Colonials a tough opponent this season with their only loss (103.95-103.425) coming versus Ocean on Oct. 7.

Freehold will match up with the Shore Conference's top teams such as Red Bank Catholic, Mid- dletown South, Freehold Town ship, Ocean, Howell, Holmdel and Middletown North for a chance at the Shore Conference Championships team title at Brick Memorial High School. "In 1992, that's the only year that we've won the Shore Conference championship team title," Pusz said. "We came in third two years ago. But we definitely think the team title is within our reach this year." 732-643-4086; schristieiiapp.com; http:twitter.comsherlonapp By SHERLON CHRISTIE STAFF WRITER The Freehold gymnastics team's freshman class was a big question mark in the preseason. But after several strong performances during the season, the freshmen have made the Colonials a strong contender for the Shore Conference Championships tomorrow.

"Overall, we were hoping for another successful season as a team," Freehold gymnastics coach Katie Pusz said. "This freshman class has had an impact on that. I didn't know what we were getting until after the first meet." That first meet was a 107.3-101.055 victory over Holm-del on Sep. 15. Maria Cusanelli, Shani Weiss and Jenna Crisalli have emerged as leaders of that freshman class.

Cusanelli took first in vault (9.15) and second in beam (8.75). Weiss took third in vault (8.83), bars (8.55) and beam (8.7). Crisalli took first in floor (9.5), and second in bars (9.15). The Colonials have a roster consisting of six freshmen (Crisalli, Cusanelli, Weiss, Samantha Loftu9, Hannah Stokes and Cindy Viru), eight sophomores led by Jennifer King, Rachel Kudler and Brittany Cannarozzi, jtfnior Angela Lfjtigette and senior Gabby Cusanelli, the captain.
