Asbury Park Nov. 20, 1382 B5 Scholastic Sports Report Seraphs' title dreams go up in smoke with 3-2 loss cepted a pass and blasted a shot into the lower left corner of the goal. It was his first tally of the season. Finally, in the third period, St. Benedict's offense got untracked when Rafael Velasquez picked off a pass right in front of the Seraph goal and booted the ball past Tom Gross.

Here, Tabare Ramos, who plays for the United States National Team, began to show his incredible talent, and things began to swing St. Benedict's way. On a direct kick from 20 yards out, Ramos found a tiny hole in the Mater Dei wall and boomed the ball through it and into the net to tie the game, 2-2. The goal was the 49th of the season for Ramos and set the stage for a weird finish. VanSchaack describes it: "The play started with a direct kick by Ramos from about 30 yards out.

The shot hit the post and the ball bounded right out to a teammate (Javier Rual), who was standing right in front of the goal. He rebounded it in and that was the game. "We just didn't execute in the second half. We played a kick-andrrun game with them and Ramos was the difference. "He's a strong player, but we played him very well; we contained him.

He never had a really good shot. "Then that shot of his hits and post, they get a break, and it's all over for us. "But we got this far and that, in itself, is quite and accomplishment. I would hope that people would look at the strides this program has made in the last two years and not just dwell on the outcome of this game. Mustangs present rench with memorable victory I in so much hard work so much effort.

"We played well and we controlled the first half, but mistakes really killed us. With a few breaks, early on, we could have had a Gve, six-goal lead." At 0:12 of the second period, Mater Dei's Gary Sisto picked up a nice crossing pass from Mike Molloy and tucked the ball into the right corner of the net to give the Seraphs a 1-0 lead. The goal was the 15th of the year for Sisto. Later on in the period, the Mater Dei lead went to 2-0 when John Kilbride inter i ft jt 4 v. I I I 1 1" f- r-1f I i A -x.

"Everything just seemed to go in St. Benedict's favor," said Seraph coach Ken VanSchaack. "I was a little nervous, not a lot. No butterfingers today." a Yascur made a big save early on in the second quarter.

Yascur came out to challenge a charging, Butch Gelnovatch and successfully smothered the shot. "When he came right in front of me I Just dove right at his feet," Yascur said. Right after Gross' score, Butch Gelnovatch who had two scores called back in game, the first on a jumping in violation, the next on a hand ball led Wall's attack and threatened to get off a mighty ilast from close range, but his shot was Reflected out of danger by Stephens and Greg Pagano cleared it. 'Wall had another opportunity on a corner, but that's when Gelnovatch was called for a hand ball. A few minutes after that a scuffle between Wall's Rick Renna and Yascur broke out and both were ejected.

After that Raritan turned it on. Chris Eisdorfer, the Rockets' leading scorer with 26 goals, took five consecutive shots strong shots but they whistled over the crossbar, beside the net or into Megill's arms. But though Eisdorfer didn't score, he did succeed in winding the clock down to one minute. Wall didn't relent and had one last good chance on Steve Smalley's shot, but his chip landed safely in Yascur's waiting arms. The game finally ended with Raritan in possession of the ball and the Central Jersey Group III title.

Freehold PRINCETON On Thursday, Free hold Township sophomore Cory Schnebel was having all sorts of problems with his team's penalty shot drill. "I was putting the ball wide all day, I wasn't really concentrating," said Schnebel, who went 0-5 practicing penalty kicks. i But Schnebel was concentrating yesterday when it mattered most. He blasted home the decisive goal in a 5-4 shootout that gave the Patriots a 2-1 victory over Steinert in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Central Jersey Group IV championship soccer game at Princeton University. The first four Steinert players scored in the shootout, as did Freehold Township's Craig Schnebel, Mark Cregle, Kenny Finn, aiid John Duffy.

But Steinert's fifth shooter fired the ball wide of Patriot goalie Grant Pearson. 1 Suddenly, there was Schnebel, with Freehold Township's first NJSIAA section title resting at his feet. "I had a lot of pressure, I just concentrated real hard," he said. The final Brick Memorial goal came with five seconds left in the third quarter when Fogler and Mike Powers ran a give-and-go to perfection. Fogler charged down field, drew Brown toward him, crossed the ball to Powers, who quickly zipped the ball back to Fogler, who chipped the ball into a wide-open net. "This was the most satisfying of them all," added Mark Kelber, who has been on all three championship teams. "We didn't say anything on the way here, we just thought about what we had to do. It was our best game of the season and it couldn't have come at a better time." By JOE ZEDALIS Press Staff Writer DOVER TOWNSHIP Brick Memorial head coach Woody French garnered his 200th career coach victory yesterday and its doubtful that French himself could have picked a more appropriate time to reach the milestone.

The Golden Mustangs won their third straight New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association South Jersey Group soccer championship and avenged two regular-season losses to Toms River South with a 4-1 triumph over the Indians at Ocean County College. Memorial collected its second straight South Jersey Group UJ title after winning in Group two years ago. It was a "simple" victory for Brick Memorial, which advances to the Group III semifinals against Central Jersey Group HI Raritan at a site and time to be determined. "Simple" because that's they way the Mustangs made it look. The four Brick goals were picture perfect.

The passes were sharp and the plays were executed like the coaches draw it on the blackboard. The defense, which has been Brick Memorial's strong suit all season long, bottled up the South strikers. The only Toms River goal came when Paul Hamadyk converted a penalty shot at 12:32 of the fourth period. "We wanted this one very bad," said French, who saw his club drop 2-0 and 3-2 decisions to South's Indians during the regular season. "Toms River South gave us the worst beating we ever had earlier this year.

In fact, they helped us turn our season around. But today we were the better team right from the opening whistle. "When the season started, I never envisioned this," French explained. "But as the season went on I knew it was possible." When French said from the opening whistle, he wasn't kidding. Memorial launched two quick shots at South keeper Tom Brown in the early minutes and notched its first goal just 3:09 into the game.

On a corner kick, Mark Kelber boomed the ball into the penalty box. The ball sailed through a group in front of the cage and right onto the foot of Mike Kelber who deflected the ball to the far post. Memorial (17-5-1) made it 2-0 at 10:50 of the opening quarter when winger John Aromando crossed the ball to Rob Fogler, who put it in. The Mustangs kept the pressure on in the second quarter but some heroics by Brown, who finished with eight saves, prevented an early blowout. But Memorial couldn't be stopped for long, however.

But just when Freehold Township head coach Bill DePeppe and goalie Grant Pearson began to envision their 11th shutout of the season, Steinert tied the game on a 20-yard shot by Bob Dass at 12:19 of the fourth quarter.

"There was a bit of a letdown emotionally after they tied the game," said DePeppe. "A few of our players were upset, it almost appeared as if it were a winning goal rather than a tying goal."
