A youth coach gets involved cause of his or her love for kids or the sport which they're involved in. What happens? A child becomes injured for whatever reason and somehow the coach seems to take the brunt of the blame. A well-known case occurred in a South Jersey Little League tournament game a few years ago. A shortstop, because there were several shortstops on his team, was placed in the outfield. He becomes injured after misplaying a fly ball.

The complaint: the child was not adequately taught how to field an outfield position. In order to help satisfy legal requirements since that event, the Ail-American Sports Medicine Center held its third annual Recreational Coaches, Little League and Softball Clinic last Thursday at the Monmouth College gymnasium. New Jersey has a law which protects volunteer coaches who have participated in a "safety orientation and training program" from civil liability for injuries or damages which have occurred while in the coaches care. "A lot of people are so paranoid that when you step on the field you're going to be sued," said Brian McGrath, Director of Marketing and Patient Services for the Neptune-based Center. "We want to give someone the working-hands knowledge of how to run a practice and keep them out of trouble." The clinic was designed to help baseball and Softball coaches in most areas of play, practice, conditioning, injury treatment and game conditions, such as hitting and fielding.

Other topics covered were adolescent sports injuries and the law. "The Little League (national office in Williamsport, Pa.) does not endorse anyone, but they say what we have offer far exceeds what is expected in a program," McGrath said. "Anyone who does Little League should have training in a safety-oriented program." TEAM COACHING: USGF Class II girls gymnastics team; owns Head over Heals Gymnastics. HIGH SCHOOL ATTENDED: Keyport. It was the first time I've ever won a team title in Class II. I've had some individual champions when I was coaching at Alts Gymnastics and at Holmdel High School." Head over Heals Class II team is advancing to the Region 7 Class II championships April 22 in Pittsburg.

GOAL AS COACH: "I just want them to be the best they can be. I want them to keep it in perspective that they should keep it fun. When it stops being fun they should stop doing it. I think some coaches forget that." -The Legcnj i 1 1 First Holy Communion For That Special Day A Large Selection Of Gift Items Motorcycles Quality Flowering Annuals Vegetable Plants Perennials Nursery Stock Ground Cover "Where Quality Grows" CWtfT PC PADM Missals Rosaries Veils Statues Frames Plaques Ties Arm Bands Jewelry Handkerchiefs Communion Cards Invitations Thank Yous Trinity Book Store 598 Palmer Ave. jnr ataa North Middletown JD-U5)) 741-9563 Located at Rumson Road, Little Silver Mon.
