tomorrow at the Court Tavern, 124 Church New Brunswick) named their recent album "Superfuzz BigmufT for the effects boxes its two guitarists use. So there's no need calling them a guitar band. They play metallic punk rock the way the Stooges and the Sex Pistols intended it good, basic melodies with three-ish chords, no flash, no meandering, lots distortion and a drummer (Dan Peters) who keeps the beat with the graee of a '73 Chevy Nova. In an age when, so many rock bands hajre gloom and doom on thir minds, what puts Mudhflney overt their conviction that all is not lost. Singer Mark Arm, who formed the band with fellow guitarist Steve Turner after their old band, Seattle's much-loved Green River, called it quits, is in a constant struggle between good and bad, happiness and sadness.

In "If I Think," which sounds like Pink Floyd as done by the Flaming Lips, the singer tries as hard as he can to forget about the girl who devastated him, but can't quite do it. "I opened my eyes, watched the sky turned blue," he sings. "I felt so good I almost forgot all about you." Another song has him "slidin' in 'n' out of grace." As long as Arm doesn't slide off either side of the fence he's sitting on, this could be a great band. East Coast Rocker, a Montclair-based rock music weekly, has launched its 1989 unsigned bands competition, which will award $10,000 to one band early next year. The 1988 winner, Bergen County reggae band No HI I c-.
