A Flippant Remark JJR- PS: ne statement by Connie Downey, an official of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare that the only alternatives to abortion are "suicide, motherhood and madness" shows the bankruptcy of our federal gov-eminent. I am aghast that our bureaucrat can't give us at least a little creative imagination in return for their munificent salaries. Instead of a flippant dismissal of this anguishing prob-lem, I suggest that Ms. Downey look at the bumper stickers here in Monmouth County. They show an alternative that I feel sure will appeal to many women with unwanted pregnancies.

That is adoption. GEORGE A. HESPE, Red Bank A Message for Flynn EDITOR, PRESS: My congratulations to William E. Flynn, D-Monmouth, who will fight at "every possible level" to keep the New Jersey Bell Telephone Co. from increasing pay toll charges to 20 cents.

If, after this dramatic battle (most cities in the United States now have 20 cents pay telephone charges), he has one breath of stamina left, he might direct his enthusiasm to voting "non" to increasing his legislative salary from 110,000 to $18,000. And If his will is as strong as most legislators contend It is, be might defer collection of his legislative salary at the beginning of the year and collect payments on the meetings he might deign to attend. SUPER TOE FOOTBALL GAME EDITOR, PRESS: I often feel alarmed at some of the sick drivel that appears in your Forum under the guise of freedom of the press. This was especially true of the remarks regarding public employees using official vehicles. I happen to live very near the Toms River DYFS Office, and I see these dedicated employees working long hours in service of clients who do not have "official times" of need. One employee whom I know even took a homeless child into his own home rather than see the child placed In the county shelter.

PRESS: We simply want to express our admiration for the Wanamaaaa volunteer firemen and police department and our appreciation for tht prompt, courteous way in which both departments responded to our request (or aa-aJjtance on Sunday, Nov. 27.

While using the toaster in our kitchen we noticed a puff of smoke coming from tbt wall. We hoped it was nothing serious, but rather than risk a fire by hesitating we called for the flit company and asked if someone could come out to check our wiring as a preventive measure. Within seconds not only did several firemen appear at our door, but also all the equipment necessary to fight a blaze pulled up in front of our house. One of the police officers explained that although we thought our problem was minor, the fire company was prepared for any possibility. Several firemen examined the wiring and confirmed our suspicion of a short circuit due (as we later learned from an electrician who repaired the connection) to a loose connection.

This letter Is our way of saying "thank you" to all those gentlemen who interrupted their day of relaxation to respond to our need, and who protect the Interests of their fellow residents 365 days a year. SALLY AND BILL BASSOFF, Ocean Township Kennedy's Victory EDITOR, PRESS: Now that the voters of Monmouth and Ocean Counties have elected Brian Kennedy as senator, we have another lawyer to represent us in Trenton. No more little guy to be pulled apart by that I mean a school teacher, Sen. Herbert Buehler, who had little to gain only to work for the people. He has worked very hard these past four years, after all, he is only one man and miracles just don't happen overnight.

Now when all his hard work will become a reality, who will take the credit, Mr. Kennedy, whose only issue was Sen. Buehler's teaching salary. Mr. Kennedy failed to mention that the figure he quoted, 115,000, allowed Sen.

Buehler by the state for staff, was also received by Mr. Kennedy for staff. He, too, received a telephone credit card and a railroad pass. This letter is also directed to the Asbury Park Press who endorsed Mr. Kennedy and it seemed you gave him better coverage.

Why wasn't Sen. Buehler Interviewed by your editorial board? Is this fair and impartial reporting? Mr. Kennedy is once again abstaining recently he abstained on the Lifeline bill that would benefit senior citizens. Is he being paid a salary of $10,000 to continually abstain? Come on, Mr. Kennedy, do your Job.

On election night when he was interviewed on WJLK, Mr. Kennedy made the statement, "Good guys finish last," so I guess we lost a good guy, Sen. Herbert Buehler. Byrne and by the Merlino Bill.

Voters were led to believe that the New Jersey Income tax was necessary to support "Thorough and Efficient" education In our schools. Voters wen also told that the New Jersey income tax would be used for educating our children and not for any other purpose. In the past, voters were told the New Jersey educational system needed help, either we introduce the income tax or the lottery; we chose the lottery. Then It wu either the sales tax or the income tax; we chose the sales tax. Obviously we opened Pandora's box with apparent disregard for inflation and the laws of economics or else again we have not learned our lesson.

The distressing thing about all this Is the hopelessness of the voter and taxpayer who are at the mercy of their elected officials and believe the lawmakers are working in the best interest of the people of New Jersey. I guess if we the people want more, we must pass more laws; more laws no doubt mean more government; more government means more regulation and more taxes. After all is said and done, we the people must pay. I guess, as a last resort, the people of New Jersey (Including our industries) that don't want to be burdened with more taxes, can always move out of the state. Could it be that New Jersey has Inherited New York Cify's philosophy of fiscal responsibility? SAMUEL J.
