Pharos-Tribune, Logansport, Indiana, Friday, February 6, 1987 Page 9 Sports Cass, Braves Meet For Title ByGREGMcCLURE Sports Editor WALTON Lewis Cass will meet defending champion Ma- conaquah for the Cass sectional title Saturday night. The Kings came from behind and then had to hold off a late Pioneer rally to beat the Panthers 44-39 in Thursday's -first semifinal game. Defending sectional champion Maconaquah controlled North Miami from start to finish in a 52-36 victory in the second game. Cass 44, Pioneer 39 In Thursday's first game, Pioneer got off to a strong start and led Cass 19-10 early in the second quarter. But the Kings got hot from the field and scored 16 unanswered points and outscored the Panthers 18-1 to take command of the contest with a half time advantage.

Cass was 10-18 from the field in the second period with most of the shots coming from long range over Pioneer's 1-3-1 zone defense. Beth Shanks led the Cass charge, hitting all four of her shots for eight points in the second. "I'm not trying to brag but we hit that way in practice," Lewis Cass coach John Dixon said. "We've been trying to take those shots during games to break zones up." The Kings increased their margin to 13 in the third quarter, outscoring the Panthers 11-6. Pioneer was only two of 13 from the field during the second and third periods.

Panthers' Lewis Cass Sectional Lewis Cass 44 Pioneer 39 Maconaquah. N. Miami 52 36 coach Jeff Waldon said the Kings' outside shooting and his team's shooting slump in the second and third periods was the key to the game. "They (the Kings) did a real good job of spreading the floor out," he said. "I was impressed with their outside shooting.

Our shooting fell off and we got hesitant on our shots. They double-teamed Cathy Hamilton and that's what hurt us." A combination of foul trouble and turnovers by Cass gave the Panthers several opportunities to get back in the game during the final quarter. Cass had four players foul out and seven turnovers during the fourth period but Pioneer was unable to take advantage of the Kings' problems until it was too late. With 1:34 remaining, Pioneer ran off six straight points to narrow the Kings' advantage from 42-33 to 42-39 but by that time only 10 seconds were left in the game. Shelly Hewitt and Lori Huston then hit free throws to seal the Cass win.

"They switched defenses and gave us a lot of things to look at," Dixon said of Pioneer's rally. "We kind of quit going to the basket." Waldon said Pioneer's failure to capitalize at the free throw line in the final period (the Pan- thers were 5-13 in the fourth) hurt the Panthers. "I think we could have been in the game if we could have hit our free throws, "he said. Shanks led 6-12 Cass with 11 points and Aleta Wilson had 10. Angle Sproles and Hamilton paced Pioneer, which ended the season 3-16, with nine points apiece.

Macon. 52, N.M. 36 In the second game Macon- aquah was in control from start to finish. The Braves shot 64 percent from the field in the first quarter to take a 16-4 lead and North Miami never recovered. Maconaquah extended its lead to 15 points at the half and 17 after three quarters.

The 17-2 Braves shot 53 percent from the field (20-38) for the game while North Miami converted only 27 percent of its attempts (15-56). Maconaquah's Sarah Willson led all scorers with 19 points and Hope Hershberger added 12 for the Braves. Sarah Hurst had 10 for North which ended the season 10-9. Sports Editor ROCHESTER Winamac and Caston played their usual nail biting, barn burning, heart stopping extravaganza at the Rochester sectional Thursday night. The last three sectional meetings between the Warriors and Comets have been decided by six points or less. Winamac pulled out this year's game 49-46 and will meet Culver Girls Academy in the championship game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. After trailing by five after the first period, the Warriors outscored Caston 14-4 in the second quarter for a 12-7 lead.

Several of Winamac's points came from Caston turnovers caused by Winamac's full-court pressure defense. In the second quarter the Comets committed seven turnovers. "We felt getting into a full- court game was to our advantage because of our quickness," Winamac head coach Jim Swaney said. "I felt our press was good enough to throw them off." "It did rattle us a bit," Caston head coach J.T. Hubenthal said.

Winamac built a 29-20 margin early in the second half but then Rochester Sectional Winamac 49 Caston 46 Caston charged back to puil to within three at 35-32 after three quarters. Caston junior Shelly Bingle made it a one-point contest by scoring six seconds into the fourth period. She then tied the game with at 38 with another field goal with 6:25 left. Winamac then scored the next six points for a 44-38 lead with 3:23 left. With 2:51 remaining, Caston junior Edie Unger fouled out.

Unger had been kept in check by the Warriors most of the contest, scoring eight points after hitting for 24 against Culver Wednesday night. Caston refused to quit as Bingle and junior Carrie Baker scored to make it a 44-42 game. The Warriors' free throw shooting skills were then tested. Sophomore Stephanie Roth hit two from the line to give Winamac a 46-42 cushion but Caston sophomore Christy Foreman scored to keep the pressure on the Warriors. Roth then connected on one of two free throw attempts for a 47-44 advantage with 27 seconds remaining.

Winamac got the ball back and junior Chris Russell connected on one of two free throws for 48-44 advantage with 17 seconds left. Comet senior Sheri DeWitt then scored but Russell hit one of two free throws again with only two seconds remaining to seal the victory. Swaney felt two keys to Winamac's winning were the Warriors ability to keep Caston off the offensive boards and their consistent outside shooting in the second half. "The last time (we played against the Comets) they had a lot of offensive boards for Swaney said. He also credited freshman Stephanie Ezra with hitting some key field goals down the stretch and Winamac's better free throw- shooting for giving the Warriors what they needed to win.

In their first meeting against Caston earlier this season Winamac hit only 12 of 33 free throws against the Comets. Thursday they connected on 13 of 19 from the line. In Winamac's first meeting against Caston this year the Comets won 60-54 in overtime. Winamac went to 11-7 on the season and Caston finished at 9-11. In Thursday's first semifinal game, freshman Patricia Babcock scored 25 points and senior Mea Tettenborn had 14 to lead Culver Girls Academy (15-4) to a 53-29 win over Rochester.

Sophomore Skdi Rock led Rochester (0-17) with eight points. The Berries will be trying for their fourth straight regional championship after claiming their 17th consecutive Logansport sectional title last week. Logan advanced nine wrestlers, who all won individual sectional titles, to the regional. Western, winner of last week's Taylor sectional, and Frankfort, winner of the Twin Lakes sectional, also both have nine wrestlers in the regional.

Benton Central advanced 10 wrestlers to the regional. The top two wrestlers from each weight class at last week's sectional qualified for Saturday's regional. The top three finishers in each weight class at the regional advance to the semistate at Merrillville next week. Winning nine titles at the sectional helped Logan in the draw for this week's tourney, according to Logansport coach Joe Patacsil. "We're sort of happy with the draw but when you win nine weight classes (at sectional), you usually get a good draw, "he said.

The nine Berries in Saturday's tourney will be Todd Frantz (98 pounds, 19-4 record), Mike Casalini (105, 15-6), Jay Rose (119, 15-4), Troy Kitchel (126, 19-3), Chuck LaDow (132, 21-1), Steve Gochenour (145, 23-1), Ted Freidline (167, 17-2), Scott Price (177, 20-4) and Joe Ricci (185, 11-11). Patacsil says the key for the Berries will be the same as last week, beating the other contenders when they meet. "Western has a good shot at it. Whenever we come across them, we have to beat them," he said. "We don't face that many from Frankfort but we do face some from Western." Winamac's wrestlers at the regional are Todd Schultz (heavyweight, 15-4-1), Kevin Tankersley (112, 18-2-1), Scott Hoffman (126, 21-1), Frank Thompson (167, 17-6), Bruce Fagan (105, 15-4), Jim 0' Harrow (119, 20-3) and Don Thomas (155, 17-5).

Lewis Cass, Pioneer and Caston will each have two wrestlers in the regional. The regional will consist' of three sessions with the first beginning at 9:30 a.m., the second at 1:30 p.m. and the third at 4 p.m. Admission is $3 per session and $5 for the entire tourney.
