MONDAY, JUNE 28. 1999 ASBURYPARK PRESS PAGE D5 SOCCER Lady Stallions' streak reaches nine i STAFF REPORT THE NEW Jersey Lady Stallions won their ninth consecutive game yesterday, beating the Delaware Genies 5-2 in a Women's Elite Soccer Wl-League road game. NIGERIA 2, DENMARK 0: Nigeria moved into position to become the first African team to ever advance to the quarterfinals with its victory over Denmark at Jack Kent Cooke Stadium.

Mercy Akide scored in the 25th minute and Nkiru Okosieme in the 81st as the Super Falcons finished Group A with a 2-1 record. Akide, taking a lead pass from Patience Avre, put the ball between the legs of goalkeeper Dorthe Larsen to give Nigeria the first-half lead. Okosieme sealed the victory with a 17-yard blast after defender Jeanne Axelsen mishandled the ball at the edge of the penalty box. ITALY 2, MEXICO 0: With nothing to gain, Italy and Mexico played a spirited match in Foxbora, Mass. Italy (1-1-1) got goals from Patrizia Pan-ico in the 37th minute and Paola Zanni in the 51st, both on shots goalkeeper Lenny Quinones (Displayed.

Panico scored with a brilliant move on which she put the ball between defenders. But her shot was low, right at Quinones' hands, and it sneaked through into the net. The second goal was a 20-yard lob by Zanni's left foot that sailed over the outstretched hands of Quinones. Mexico (0-3) performed far better than in losses to Brazil (7-1) and Germany (6-0). Several times, striker Maribel Dominguez threatened off long passes, including a chip over goalie Giorgia Brenzan that tipped off the crossbar and sailed over the net in the 35th minute.

The Associated Press players in scoring, and Germany ties Brazil and gets U.S. team next GERMANY gave up a goal on the last play of the game yesterday. As penance, it now has to play the United States. In the fourth minute of second-half injury time, Maicon drove home a 12-footer after a twice-headed free kick to lift Brazil into a 3-3 tie with Germany in Landover, and first place in Group in the Women's World Cup. The result means Brazil will play Nigeria, the second-place team from Group in the quarterfinals.

Group runner-up Germany will face the tournament favorite U.S. team, with both games Thursday at Jack Kent Cooke Stadium. "We always seem to have something like" this happen to us," Germany goalkeeper Silke Rottenberg said. "We are no more afraid of the Americans than they are of us. We don't want to hide from the Americans, we just didn't want to have to book any early flight home." Brazil now avoids the United States until the semifinals.

"Inevitably we have to play the U.S," Brazil coach Wilson De Oliveira Rica said. "But down the road is much better." The result also eliminated Italy from contention for a quarterfinal berth. The Germans, though exhausted in the heat and humidity, had limited Brazil to one shot on goal in the second half until the final push in injury time when Tina Wunderlich fouled Maicon to the right of the penalty box. LADY STALLIONS 5 GENIES 2 fer scored in the second half. Goalkeeper Amy Pseja, who had an assist on Smith's second goal, made two saves.

On Friday, the Lady Stallions defeated the Central Jersey Splash of the W2-League, 2-0, in New Brunswick. Kelly scored both goals in that game. The Lady Stallions have yet to lose a game since acquiring Smith and Confer, both of whom were signed after the season's first game, a loss to the Maryland Pride of the Wl-League. Smith was an Ail-American at Seton Hall and a five-year member of England's national team. Confer played for three national championship teams at the University of North Carolina.

On Saturday in Toms River, the Stallions, who play in the D3-Pro League of United Soccer Leagues, defeated the New Brunswick-based Central Jersey Riptide of the Premier Developmental League, 4-0. The Riptide had upset the Stallions earlier in the season. Associated Press Italian defender Luisa Marchio (right) heads the ball out of reach of Mexico's Maribel Dominguez. i i Kelly had two goals each as the Lady Stallions, who play out of Toms River, improved their record to 9-1. Delaware is now 0-8.

Smith now has 10 goals and three assists for 23 points. Kelly is second in the Wl-League with 22 points (nine goals, four assists). Robin Confer, who has missed two games, is third in Wl at 7-5-19. The Lady Stallions outshot the Genies 23-12 and put the game away in the first half by scoring all three goals, two by Smith. Kelly and Con Sissi, who earlier scored her tourna- ment-high sixth goal, took the kick and chipped the ball into the box.

It was headed once by a teammate and once by Germany defender Sandra Minnert and fell to the left foot of second-half substitute Maicon, who drove the shot past Rottenberg. In a match that pitted Brazilian flair vs. German precision, Germany scored first when Maren Meinert made a nice 40-yard run down the middle of the field and passed left in the penalty box to Birgit Prinz, who netted in the eighth minute. Brazil tied the game in the 15th on Katia da Silva's 17-yard strike into the upper left-hand corner of the net, then took the lead on Sissi's 28-yard free kick around the left side of the wall in the 20th. Down 2-1 at halftime, Germany regained the lead early in the second half on goals from Bettina Wiegmann and Jones.

E-mail from the World Cup WELL, THE day started off the same, breakfast followed by a team meeting.

The meeting was a little disappointing. Yesterday, I was told that I would be starting. Things changed. Tony changed the lineup and therefore I was not in it. It was a huge disappointment.

However, his decision was made due to situations that may happen down the road. He explained to me that if Kate (Sobrero) happens to have a relapse, he wanted Carla (Overbeck) and Joy (Fawcett) to be comfortable working together in the middle of defense. I totally understand his decision. So, I will have to keep working hard at practice and show him he needs to use me. On a happier note, my mother brought the hair supply again.

We have been using colored hair spray. Once you apply shampoo the coloring comes out. However, if Joy Fawcett scores a goal, Kate Sobrero said she would permanently dye her hair red and blue! The nail art is still coming along. Hope you enjoy the game! The celebrations will be fun! u.s. ence paid off.

Lilly carried along the right perimeter of the box before lofting a cross to the other side of the penalty area. MacMillan centered back to the goal mouth where Venturini went face first to nod home a shot with keeper Kye Yong Sun just inches from grabbing it. Eight minutes later, MacMillan sent a cross that Venturini headed in from eight yards for a 3-0 lead, punctuated by her crowd-pleasing cartwheel-roundoff-fl ip. "My jaw went down to my knees," said Foudy of Venturini's flip. "I had no idea.

I said, 'Where the (heck) did you pull that one She said, 'I'm a gymnast, I said, 'Get out of It was so fantastic." "It's a great credit to Julie (Foudy). She came in and took control as well and Tiffeny (Milbrett) came in and sparked us, but I think it was coming. "Not to take anything away from them, but I think the team was playing and it was just a matter of time." MacMillan gave the United States a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute, taking a cross from Foudy at the top left corner of the penalty area and hitting a low shot on one hop into the near corner. Two minutes later, Foudy set up midfielder Kristine Lilly in the penalty area, but her 15-yard shot banged off the left post. North Korea immediately coun jTrom Page Dl to know that no matter what the other team gives us, we'll have the players to work with it." Venturini, a starter in the 1995 World Cup and also part of the 1996 team, had lost her job when Michelle Akers moved from the front line to midfielder.

With Akers resting, Venturini received a rare start. Still, it wasn't until DiCicco inserted two of his starters at half-time midfielder Julie Foudy and Milbrett that the American attack showed some life. think we played a great game.
