C4 The Pittsburgh Press Monday, May 2. lsjaa TELEVISION Reader dares a boycott of 'Double Dare' Wayne P. Kelly Jr. of Robert Bianco 4 '-''iiiiiih- NBC airing drama of hostage Flight 847 By Jerry Buck LOS ANGELES (AP) The actors portraying the terror aboard an airliner hijacked to Lebanon sometimes used jokes to get through the tense, emotional scenes, says Lindsay Wagner, who stars as courageous flight attendant Uli Derickson. There are moments of humor." said Ms.

Wagner of the NBC movie, "The Taking of Flight 847: The Uli Derickson Story." NBC will air the two-hour movie tonight at 9. "It was the only way to survive aboard the plane. And when we did the heavy scenes, we'd break up trying to get through it The emotions would become so overpowering, you had to have relief." To an extent, that was one way the real-life hostages aboard the TWA jet coped with fear after two terrorists seized the plane June 17, 1985, on a flight from Athens to Rome. It was Ms. Derickson who emerged as a heroine during the hijacking, in which the plane was diverted to Beirut flew to Algiers, then returned to Beirut She helped get some passengers released and attempted to conceal the identities of the Jewish passengers.

One passenger, a young Navy frogman, Robert Stethem, was shot to death by the terrorists. The other passengers and crew eventually were released. "She was very human," said Ms. Wagner of Ms. Derickson.

"She ended up doing some extraordinary things. There were times when she was crying and her hands were shaking, but she didn't freeze up. She pushed through her emotions. One terrorist made her sing 'Patty Cake' in German, then proposed marriage to her." Most of the movie was filmed in a mockup of the airplane's cabin, a small and cramped space. Ms.

Derickson, who is still flying with TWA, was a consultant for the film. "I asked her things like what it was like moment to moment" said Ms. Wagner. "She was on the set if I had any questions. (For) some things you can simply use your own instinct but when you had a choice, I wanted her input She also relayed some of the little anecdotes.

She was very good in helping me create moments." It would not be unreasonable for festival officials to be concerned about the propriety of mixing contemporary Christian music, which tends to have an explicit evangelical message, with a government-backed city festival. If that's what's going on, one wishes festival officials would stop talking about "artistic integrity" and just say so. LIZA SPECIAL Liza Minnelli is bringing out some big Broadway guns for her ABC special May 31, "Liza Minnelli: Triple Play." The one-hour special will be done In three parts a drama, a comedy and a musical The drama segment will be written by Lanford Wilson, who wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Tally's Folly" and the current hit "Burn This." The comedy will be written by Terrence McNally and Wendy Wasserstein It the score for the musical will be written by John Kander and Fred Ebb, who worked with Miss Minnelli on "Cabaret" "New York, New York." "The Rink" and her TV special "Liza with a 'V Ryan O'Neal, Lou Gossett Jr. and John Rubinstein are the guests, and the special will be directed by British director Piers Haggard from Heaven," "The Singing in his first American assignment Let's hope all these Impressive people come up with an equally impressive show. (Robert Bianco is The Pittsburgh Press TV-Radio editor.) opens the letters column with a complaint about the waste on "Double "Recently I made an in-house' cancellation of a TV show, not due to its sex or violence, but rather its insensitivity to hunger in a hungry world.

I'm referring to the kids' game show "Double Dare, aired daily at p.m. on WPGH. "During the 'physical challenge' aspect of the game. I've seen kids walk though tubs of bean dip and slide through peas and corn. Apparently, getting food all over the contestants is a big part of the game's "Unfortunately, for many people in the world, it's a physical challenge 'ust to keep from starving to death.

Mions can't meet this challenge. "I find it especially ironic that this show was begun during a budding national awareness of America's own growing problems of its poor and homeless. "Surely, we well-fed Americans don't need to be desensitized to the plight of the hungry any more than we have been already. "I realize that your readers' children probably find this show entertaining. I know mine did.

Nonetheless, I dare your readers to take a stand for the hungry and 'just say no' to 'Double REPLY I must admit, my first reaction to your letter was "What a stick in the mud," but the more I thought about it, the harder I found it to disagree. With so many people hungry and homeless, such a wanton show of wastefulness is hard to defend. "Double Dare" spokeswoman Linda Alexander, however, is quick to point out that no waste is actually occurring, despite appearances. She says the show only uses stale food, purchased from food banks after it is no longer distributable. No dairy products are used on the show, because they couldn't be used stale (imagine all those kids rolling around in sour milk).

So what looks like milk is actually water and food coloring. The only edible props are the eggs, because bad eggs would stop the contestants in their tracks. While it is comforting to know that, other than the eggs, no actual waste is occurring, the appearance of insensitivity remains. Using food as a prop in a hungry world sends the wrong message to our children and to anyone who has ever faced hunger. The show's contestants no doubt get some naughty pleasure out of playing in their food.

But would it really ruin their fun if the mess didn't look edible? Mart Carolyn Ludvrig is vpset with the Three Rivers Arts Festival's refusal to allow WPITFM to sponsor concert of contemporary Christian music "It makes me want to shout that the people of Pittsburgh are being discriminated against There seems to be no sense at all in the action taken by festival director John Brice and his apparent censorship of what is to be enjoyed and appreciated by the people. "I know I am not alone when I say I am disappointed in the Arts Festival's REPLY WPIT FM operations manager Dusty Rhodes is disappointed, as well, but he says the matter is closed. Negotiations have ended and Rhodes says he was told the festival does not want to work with the station this year. The festival was willing to have a gospel concert, perhaps because gospel has been assimilated into the general culture in ways that contemporary Christian music has not QE3 mszmm TONIGHT'S HIGHLIGHTS STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS Wales Con-ference Championship, game one: New Jersey or Washington at Boston (L).
