"I TUESDAY, JUNE 22, 1999 ASBURY PARK PRESS PAGE C6 HORSE RACING WOMEN'S WORLD CUP SOCCER Tournament draws media masses Lukas suspended after horse fails drug test PRESS WIRE SERVICES NEW YORK The media is embracing this year's Women's World Cup. Accreditations for the tournament are up to 1.975, a number that far exceeds any other women's soccer event. Of those accreditations, 900 went to reporters, 400 to photographers and 600 to represen NOTES tatives from radio and television sta the Waltzing Mathilda's were named after the Australian song. Brazil has no official nickname, but the media calls the Brazilians the Samba Queens, because they play the "samba soccer" that Brazil is famous for. Group featuring Germany, Brazil, Italy and Mexico, was nicknamed "the group of death" because of the high quality teams in the draw.

It would have been even more impressive had those four nations been together in the men's event Sweet 16 Nigerian midfielder Ifeanyi-chukwu Chiejene, who played in Sunday's win over North Korea, is the youngest player in the Women's World Cup. Chiejene turned 16 a little over a month ago. The Super Falcons have another 16-year-old in the ranks, Florence Iweta, who turned 16 in March. Mexico also sports a sweet 16, Moni Vergara, who celebrated her birthday in May. The tournament's oldest player is Norway's team captain Linda Med-alen.

The veteran of the 1991 and 1995 Women's World Cup turned 34 on June 17. 1995, only the six U.S. games were broadcast. This year, all the games will be televised. Seventy-four countries will broadcast the matches, with a possible television audience of 1 billion.

Marathon woman When she's finished running the Women's World Cup, Maria Messing plans to relax in a fashion. After the July 10 final, she'll begin gearing up for the New York City Marathon, as in, run 26.2 miles. She and her husband sent in applications in the spring to participate in the Nov. 7 race. "I just bought new running shoes and a new running outfit, and July 12 is my first day I go into training," said Messing, 35, president of the World Cup Organizing Committee.

She's never run a marathon, but her past three years have been one. In addition to nurturing the World Cup, she's given birth to two daughters in that span. "It will be three years that I've been involved with this by the time the tournament is over," she said. "That's one year for every one week the teams are on the field." When she went to the men's '98 World Cup in France, she was in the final weeks of her second pregnancy. "I tried to conceal my shape as I got on the plane back from France.

I was in clear violation of their rules in terms of how late in a pregnancy you can travel." Messing has no career plans after the World Cup. "I want to spend time with my husband and my kids and relax." And the New York City Marathon awaits. Messing has run shorter races, but she hasn't been able to fit running into her World Cup routine despite those new running shoes. That will change after July 10. Nickname game The Black Queens tied the Waltzing Mathilda's, the Super Falcons beat North Korea and the Samba Queens waltzed over Mexico in "the group of death." This may sound like a video game score, but all these titles are nicknames in the World Cup.

The Nigerian team is called the Super Falcons, while its men's team is known as the Super Eagles. The Black Queens are from Ghana and most analgesics and antihistamines. Dance Master, a 3-5 favorite in the maiden race, finished second. He was disqualified from the purse money. Bernie Hettel, the chief state steward and executive director of the Kentucky Racing Commission, said Lukas told the stewards that he will not appeal.

He could not be reached for comment yesterday at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. Hettel said benzenemethanol is widely used for minor breathing problems and skin diseases but it is not permitted in a horse's system when it races. It is "a therapeutic medication used on horses with regularity and necessity," Hettel said, adding the substance is not a stimulant. tions. Of these journalists, 500 come from outside the United States, with China and Nigeria making up the largest overseas contingents.

For the opening game, the United States vs. Denmark in Giants Stadium on Saturday, 416 reporters, 124 photographers and 17 radio and television stations were accredited. Interest in the U.S. team has increased dramatically since it won the 1991 Women's World Cup in China. On their return to the United States in '91, only one reporter met the players at the airport.

Another difference is the number of matches that will be televised. In SCOREBOARD 1 FINAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL TOP 25 TUCSON, Arli. D. Wayne Lukas, trainer of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Charismatic, has been suspended by Churchill Downs for 10 days after one of his horses failed a postrace drug test. The suspension most likely will be upheld by other state commissions, meaning Lukas will not be permitted on the grounds of any recognized race track in the country as long as he is suspended. The suspension is scheduled for July 6-15.

The stewards made their decision during an informal hearing Sunday at Churchill Downs, giving Lukas the minimum sanction for a positive test. The 2-year-old horse tested positive on May 16 for benzene-methanol, which is present in BASEBALL Major League Expos at Braves, 7:35 p.m., TBS. BASKETBALL WNBA Sparks at Comets, 8 p.m., ESPN. The 67-year-old Layden, a former NBA Coach of the Year, resigned because of the long workdays and traveling. Layden said he leaves with more respect for professional women's basketball than the men's game. The women, he says, have superior work and team ethics. BASEBALL: The Triple A affiliate of the Anaheim Angels purchased the contract of Atlantic City Surf outfielder Will Pennyfeather.

Penny-feather, a former Pittsburg Pirates outfielder, will report to the Angels Edmonton, Alberta affiliate. The 1986 Perth Amboy High School grad played 40 games for the Pirates in the early 1990s. He signed with the Surf of the independent Atlantic League last year in hopes of resurrecting his major league career Brian O'Connor scattered five hits over seven innings as the Altoona Curve downed the Trenton Thunder 4-3 last night in front of 6,670 fans at Mercer County Waterfront Park. Mike Robertson and Alex Hernandez each homered as Altoona improved to 37-34 on the year. Trenton fell to 45-23.

Pitchers Rick Ankiel of the St. Louis Cardinals and Ryan Anderson of the Seattle Mariners were among the players selected for the U.S. roster for the first All-Star Futures game at Boston's Fenway Park next month Former Chicago Cubs third baseman Ron Santo had a mild heart attack and was hospitalized in Denver, the team said. Santo, a color commentator for Cubs' broadcasts on WGN radio, was stricken early yesterday at a Denver hotel. TRACK AND FIELD: Olympic champion and world-record decath-lete Dan O'Brien withdrew from the U.S.

track championships because of turf toe. O'Brien will not participate in the meet, held in Eugene, from June 24-27, because of the injury to his left foot. COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Mark Up-shaw probably would have signed with Rhode Island anyway. Still, the former Columbus (Ga.) High School standout is pleased to know Stanford coaches were interested even if their recruitment letter arrived 21 years late. The letter, signed by then-Cardinal coach Dick DiBiaso, was dated May 5, 1978, but didn't arrive at Columbus High until this spring.

GOLF: The team of Bob Goalby and Howie Johnson won the Grand Champions Competition of 1999, for senior golfers 60 years and older, as the Ford Senior Champions Competition started in Dearborn, Mich. They had a best-ball total of 3-under-par 69 at the TPC of Michigan. NFL: Linebacker Dixon Edwards signed a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins, three weeks after he was released by Minnesota in a cost-cutting move. Terms of the deal were not released, but published reports said the deal was worth more than the NFL minimum of $400,000 but less than $1 million. TV SPORTS: The Women's World Cup may have set an attendance record, but it didn't draw well on television.

U.S. Open golf coverage on NBC and baseball's game of the week on Fox both had higher ratings Saturday than the United States' tournament-opening 3-0 win over Denmark on ABC. The World Cup got a 2.2 overnight rating and a 6 share, while the U.S. Open grabbed a 5.31 5 up 6 percent from 1 998 for its third-round coverage Saturday. Fox baseball, with the New York Mets and St.

Louis Cardinals in 25 markets, had a 2.8 8. MISCELLANEOUS: Ascent Entertainment Group announced it had reached an agreement to settle lawsuits filed by shareholders who challenged the sale of the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche and the new Pepsi Center. Ascent spokesman Arthur Aaron denied the agreement canceled the $400 million deal with Bill Laurie, whose wife, Nancy, is heiress to the Wal-Mart fortune.
