Jim Cag-ney is Bob's peer in the California landholding department.

NEW YORK Vanessa Redgrave's persuasive acting gifts don't translate into politics her Trotskyite cell trying to take over Britain's Actors Equity (actors' union) fell flat on its aspirations; she drew only 45 actors to her you-should-pardon-the-expression Rump Group for a show of farce and not even all of them were on her side The playwright Robert Andersons (Teresa Wright) rang down the curtain; he's the gifted author of "Tea Sympathy" and never stopped talking about his first wife, who died of cancer; their pals say he couldn't bury her in his mind. It is the second time the older son of Kirk Douglas is following in his father's footsteps-first as an actor, and now as a producer.

This time, however, he is accomplishing something his father had given up on. Michael has just completed production of the movie version of the popular Ken Kesey novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Kirk Douglas had had the rights to the play since he starred In the Broadway production in 1963. For a variety of reasons. Kirk failed to win support for the project and finally decided he would sell the rights four years ago. The buyer turned out to be his son.

MICHAEL ADMITS that it was a ticklish situation, but adds that his father is "extremely pleased with the way things turned out." Michael, who spends six months of the year in a posh penthouse apartment atop San Francisco's Russian Hill, had seen the play no less than 10 times-the first four times when his father was appearing in the New York production and six times in San Francisco, where it is still running. "Five million people have already seen the play and millions have read it around the world since it's been translated in 12 languages. Consequently, I believe that we have a built-in audience. With that combination, it's got to be a hit," the younger Douglas said enthusiastically. "Jack had wanted to do the project since it came out.

Now everyone says he's perfect for the part, but it wasn't until I saw him do it that I realized how right he was," Michael continued. During production of the film at the Oregon State Mental Hospital, Michael commuted to San Francisco for the weekly taping of "Streets of San Francisco," which is now in its fourth season. In between, he wrote some of the series scripts, and periodically flew to Los Angeles to spend time with Brenda Vacarro whom his father refers to as his "inlaw person." The penthouse is done completely in white white walls, white bookshelves, bar and TV. There's a plexl-glass dining room table, a white fur rug and two glass walls that overlook the city as well as the bay. The place is kept spotlessly clean by a housekeeper who comes in every day at 4 and stays until she has given Michael dinner and done his dishes.

"When you are acting," he says, "you are doing what some one else wants. But when you are producing, you are in control. And I like that feeling." He also is cognizant of the responsibility that goes 'along with it. Movie companies and backers didn't do flips just because he had a movie property or because he was the son of Kirk Douglas, he said. "I went to several film companies with it but few of them saw the humor in the film.

They thought it would be another 'Snake Pit' and that had been done already, "Finally, I got Saul Zaentz interested in it. Zaentz is the head of Fantasy Records and he became the co-producer. About two-thirds of the way through the production, United Artists came in to the project." Douglas stuck with the film from the beginning and was responsible for casting Nicholson as well as many of the minor roles. "We were looking for actors who could play the part of mental patients. One day a guy come in and said he heard we were looking for 'crazies' and said he thought he would be perfect for the part.

I thought he was. It turned out the guy was crazy. He had slit someone's throat and had been committed to the hospital where we were shooting."
