It is the second time the older son of Kirk Douglas is following in his father's footsteps-first as an actor, and now as a producer.

This time, however, he is accomplishing something his father had given up on. Michael has just completed production of the movie version of the popular Ken Kesey novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Kirk Douglas had had the rights to the play since he starred In the Broadway production in 1963. For a variety of reasons. Kirk failed to win support for the project and finally decided he would sell the rights four years ago. The buyer turned out to be his son.

MICHAEL ADMITS that it was a ticklish situation, but adds that his father is "extremely pleased with the way things turned out." Michael, who spends six months of the year in a posh penthouse apartment atop San Francisco's Russian Hill, had seen the play no less than 10 times-the first four times when his father was appearing in the New York production and six times in San Francisco, where it is still running. "Five million people have already seen the play and millions have read it around the world since it's been translated in 12 languages. Consequently, I believe that we have a built-in audience.
