1. The jalarmiatar spread of infantile paralysis in the large cities of the country, especially In New York and Philadelphia, has resulted in the bringing of an unusually large number of children to tho resort during the past two months by their parents; their action doubtless -being; attributable to their desire to avoid the existence of this plague among their children. Within the past 10 days, many misleading; statements have been circulated and published concerning cases of the disease in At' lantic City, but "the fact remains that out of the thousands of children who have come to the resort during the past two months, only four slight cases have coma voder the observation of the department of health, and these are isolated in the Municipal hospital, no deaths being reported. With the establishment of a rigird Quarantine, which precludes the entrance of children under ltt years of age coming into the resort without health certificates, there is absolutely no need of anxiety; and their will probably be no abatement in the number of children brought here to escape the prevalence of the disease in other cities, as Atlantic City is unquestionably one of the healthiest recreation spots in the world for children of all aires. YACHTING ACTIVITY INCREASES.

With the deepening of the Inlet channel, there has been a noticeable, increase in the number of vessels now entering the resort, and a daily visitor to the Inlet section can observe large steam j-achts and sailing vessels constantly passing in and out, while these are greatly augmented by a number of motor boats, naptha launches and other, small craft which are continually plying about; while the regulation Atlantic City sail boats for the transportation of visitors seem to be more nura crous than ever. Along the beach at night may bt found numerous gatherings enjoyinf water melon parties, and these are often elaborated with dancing. Many visitors who desire to escape the hot sun that often prevails during the regular bathing hour, find enjoyment in night bathing, which Is extremely popular at this season of the year. Philadelphia's representatives supplied most of the exhibits for Atlantic City's first automobile show, which opened Monday night on the Million. lollar pier, to contin-ue for two weeks.

The lower side of the pier, a space about 4(H) feet long by more than 100 feet wide, has been set aside for the display and crowds may inspect the latest motors and dance during intermissions. The Egyptian roof garden of the Hotel Breakers. stories in the air, has proved so popular that Proprietor Joel Hillman is planning to provide two additional open-air gardens overlooking the Boardwalk and the ocean. A "Night at Montmarte" with plenty of Parisian atmosphere, took place in the Egyptian garden on Wednesday, and "nights" in Venice. Bohemia, Turkey, Tokio and Hindustan are to follow during the season.

Professional theatrical nights are to be continued at the Breakers on Thursdays instead ot Tuesdays. HOTEL. GUESTS. The Hotel Traymore is entertaining Tt. A.

at the Essex Country club. Manchester, Airs. W. Harry Brown of Pittsburg and Beverly Cove, engaged a table and brought a company of guests. The unexpected death of the lte Eben D.

Jordan of Boston at his West Alanchester summer home and his funeral at Trinity church, Boston, the afternoon of the fourth had quite a bearing on the attendance at the dinner-dance, as Mr. Jordan was a prominent member of the club. It will be recalled that hlj only daughter. Dorothy, became the brid of ex-President Roosevelt's nephew, Douglas Robinson of New York, last February. She had arrived to spend August with her parents.

Her home coming was an extremely sorrowful one. The deceased was Boston's noted financial backer of grand opera and was instrumental in putting Boston's famous institution, the New England Conservatory of Afuslc, on its present rolid foundation. S.K.BONIFACH MARS' GALL LURES MERCURIES FROM MESSENGER JOBS High wages paid In the munitions plants has lured so many messenger boys both youngsters who usually work only in the daytime, and the gray-haired "boys" who carry telegrams at nisrht that the service of the Western Union and Postal telegraph companies has suffered. War born prosperity has vastly increased the number of messages sent and received every day, but the shortage of messengers it has created has resulted in an order by the Western Union to discontinue package deliveries, except on purely local orders. This order, which goes into effect Sept. 1.

will affect packages sent from other cities for delivery by messenger. I. Ij. manager of the Wetrn Union office in Pittsburg, explained today. The company, tnrotish its national distribution service has ben doing a business that netted more than profit a year.

It had coi Lrrtc la with business houses in many of the large cities to distribute packages sent by express to distant points, but because of the scarcity of messenger boys, and the greatly increased number of telegrams handled, this service will be turned over to another company. TELEGRAMS COME FIRST. "Packages will be delivered on local calls, as in the past," Mr. Leith explained, "but we are not encouraging that sort of bnsfness at present, and persons who wish to send packages in the city by messenger, are given to understand that delivery of telegrams comes flrVst. "Because of the school vacation period we have about all the boys we need at this time, but when the schools reopen there is certain to be a scarcity.

That is because munitions and other manufacturing plants are to pay the boys so much more than "we can. The child labor laws have also cut down the available supply of boys." No order in regard to package delivery service has been received at the local office a of the Postal Telegraph but it was said today that an order similar to that at the Western Union would not be surprising. This company has the same trouble in getting boys, although it has lost comparatively few of the bearded variety, the earnings of most of these men being as high, or nearly so, as they could get in any other work. BIG DEMAND FOR BOTS. Besides the lure of the munition plants, factories of all kinds all over the country are said to be drawing upon the available messenger-boy supply to fill the places left vacant through the mobilization of the National Guard along the Mexican border.

In some rases, two boys are required to do -the job that one guardsman left behind, and by splitting up his salary they are able to "pull down" a fatter pay envelope than the one the messenger boy gets. The messenger average between S'S and $9 a week, exclusive of tipa. In the industrial plants they are able to make from $10 to $15 a week, it was aaid. In explanation of the present shortage of boys. How He Felt.

The conditions in the trenches were dreary in the extreme after the drenching and long-continued rainfall, but tho irrepressible spirits of the "Pals' were not yet entirely quenched when the order came to leave the trencnes. "Hurry up out of this, my grUinnt soldiers." was the cheery ci! ot te fcergeant to his waist-deep and ratn-eodden men. "Soldiers!" came the derisive answer from one of them. "I'm not a soldier; Tm av blooming bulrushl" Tit-Bits. burg, now of Washington and Beverly Farms, is to go to France in September to do special work for blind soldiers.

Aliss Katherine Dorr of Boston and Alanchester, who will accompany her, Is a sister of Airs. William E. Russell. Richard Alanning Russell, who married Miss Helen AIcKee Alunson of New York and Pittsburg early in July, is a brother of Aliss Door's brother-in-law. Both are sons of the late ex-Governor Russell of Alassachusetts.
