He acknowledged he was greatly disappointeo with the team's performance, but added the club could still be a pennant contender next year "with a few changes." Except for declaring that the pitching staff, especially the bullpen, as needing help, Keane declined to speak in specifics. 'We've had some problems," he admitted. "I felt during the spring that the club was good enough to win the pennant, but 1 didn't anticipate these injuries. 'But it hasn't been the injuries alone that has placed us in this position.

It's also been the failure of the club to hit. I don't mean hitting with power, necessarily. Choisit Uied Truck Manager sS I TV By JOHN CEISER HARVEY CEDARS Two hundred and forty of the top surf fishermen on the east coast will congregate here for the 19th annual World Series Surf Fishing Tournament this weekend. The invitational event will bring together teams of picked anglers fron a half dozen states. BUI Ash ton, chairman of the tourney committee of the sponsoring Long Beach Island Fishing Club, said competition will be keen not only for the many trophies and prizes but too for a chance to comne next year. The tournament is set up so that the last 10 teams in the final standings are replaced the following year by 10 teams on the top of tke waiting list. Top team trophv is the Mayor Reynolds Thomas Trophy which will go to the club designated World Champions There will be dozens of individual awards.

The event will be held on the beach in front of the club house here. Each team of six men will fish in four different beach positions during the two-day event. Starting time Saturday is 10 a.m. and Sunday 8:45. Scoring is based on a point system, according to species and size of fish landed.

There will be no admission charge and spectators are invited to watch these experts at work. Surf Fishing The first solid showing of striped bass in the surf in a number of weeks turned up from Spring Lake to Asbury Park yesterday. In addition scattered fish were caught at Braves Fail To Attract Big Crowds MILWAUKEE, Wis. UPI The Milwaukee Braves' spirited run for the National League flag has failed to heat up the turnstiles in the club's lame duck season in this city. But the total attendance for the season will be a lot higher than Board Chairman BUI Bartholomay dolefully predicted.

Bartholomay told a midyear meeting of stockholders of the Atlanta-bound ball club that the 1965 attendance at County Stadium would be about 380,000, a loss of about $1.5 million. As of yesterday, the club had drawn 506,039 in 66 home dates compared with 868,106 for the same number of games in 1964. Last season the paid attendance at season's end amounted to 910,000 despite rumor the club would move. With seven dates left, this year's draw should total between 550,000 a.id 600,000. The remaining games in Mil-waukee include two with Phila-delphia starting tonight, three with San Francisco Sept.

17, 18 and 19, and two with Los Angeles Sept. 21 and 22. There's no disputing the fact that bitterness over the club's decision to move has kept fans away. But there have been occasional breaks in the boycott. On opening day.

in April, Teams, the civic organization seeking to retain major league baseball in Milwaukee, bought out County Stadium for a flat sum. A crowd of 33,874 turned out. The traditional rivalry between the Braves and the Chicago Cubs continued to be the best draw. On eight dates the neighboring teams played to 103,122 fans. Palmer to AKRON, Ohio UP Arnold Palmer will be missing from the World Series of Golf at Firestone Country Coub Saturday and Sunday for the first time since it was inaugurated in 1962, but Jack Nicklaus will be back after a year's absence.

Youths programs for 1965-66 start Monday for boys and girls in the third through the eighth grades.

Swimming instruction, sports, physical fitness and club activities will be offered throughout the year. This fall the boys will have a choice of two days to come to the for the first time and the program consists of four nine-week sessions. surf casters may have had some real action if the bass that showed hadn't stayed out of casting range off the sea wall most of the time. Offshore Fishing At long last the bluefish responded to chum and the party boats drifting off the Highlands Bridge around the old site of Ambrose Lightship brought back nice catches. Capt.

Pete Saro Jr. reported about 200 fish between one and two pounds on his Spray III out of Belmar. Capt. "We have different ideas," said the New York fight manager.

"Either Ernie buys me out or I'll sell the contract to someone else. I've been made an offer by Ike Salem of New York. He wants to buy the contract." Isaacson said Terrell, of Chicago, has virtually completed negotiations to defend his WBA title against George Chuvalo, the Canadian champion, in Toronto. "I wanted him to fight Chuvalo as part of a double-header with the Cassius Clay-Floyd Patterson fight in Las Vegas," said Isaacson. "If Ernie wants to do things his way without consulting me, then he can do it all without me.

All he has to do is buy me out." in the Classic. Marr was unable to compete because he was running a fever and Player passed up the tournament to go home to South Africa. Play in the Wcrld Series will begin at 1 p.m. each day, including the practice round CaUgnt. I Press Tourney Anthony Graziano Long i ronV, iiinM in nuielal I Branch, weighed in a quartet of bass in the Asbury Park Press striped bass tournament recently that were topped by a 35-pound, four-ounce fish.

The others were 28 pounds, 18 pounds and 16 pounds, six ounces. Seaside Tourney Weekly bluefish winner in the Seaside Park Tournament of Fish was Fred Soden, Trenton, with a three-pound, 11-ounce chopper. Foreign Fishing The Soviet fishing fleet is still concentrating its efforts from 105 to 140 miles off Cape Cod. A fleet of 45, that included 23 fish factory stern trawlers, 15 side trawlers, six refrigerated transports and a tug, were working according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Also two Polish stern trawlers and a Romanian stern trawler were operating. MafB l- aVafj)t)lll)asjMJJ NEW YORK iJfl Johnny Keane received his vote of confidence in wnting yesterday when he was signed to another one-year contract as manager of the New York Yankees.

The move was somewhat unprecedented since it was the first time the Yankees had ever strayed from their practice of waiting until the end of the season before announcing the retention or dismissal of their manager. "Dan Topping club president and I decided for two reasons to do it earlier than we've ever done it before," said the club's vice president and general manager, Ralph Houk. "The first reason is obvious. It's because of the club's present standing and we wanted to scotch all rumors one way or the other. "The other reason is that I want it fully understood by the players and everybody con- nected with the club that John will be here next year Houk made it clear he was not holding Keane responsible for the failure ot the club, currently in sixth place after being widely picked to win its sixth successive American League championship.

"We cannot blame our present position on the manager," he said. "We feel it is the result of not having our club together for the entire season. "While we do not like to use injuries as an alibi, it is nonetheless true that we have not been able to play our regular club as a unit this season." At one time or another, the Yankees have been without the services of Mickey Mantle, El-ston Howard, Roger Maris and Tony Kubek. Maris and Kubek 1962 IS 1962 CHEV. 1959 CHEV.
