Page 2A Pharos-Tribune Living Section, Sunday, December 28, 1986 Winter Bring! New Rules For Drivers BLOOMINGTON Key words to remember when driving on ice and snow are "patience" and "being attentive." With this in mind, highway safety researchers in Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs offer some tips for motorists. Don't be in too big a hurry to reach your destination. Allow extra travel time. Drive a safe, steady pace. Try to avoid making any sudden moves with the steering wheel, brakes or accelerator.

Because holiday trips often involve longer periods of driving time, the SPEA safety experts in the Transportation Research Center suggest a rest period every couple of hours. This is particularly important when traveling with small children, who tend to become restless and distractive as the hours go by. Noting that up to 50 percent of all traffic accidents can be attributed to some form of "driver inattention, "the researchers stress awareness of the winter driving environment. Always be attentive to what is happening around you oncoming cars, the vehicles in front and behind, changing road conditions and approaching stop signs and traffic lights and adjust your driving accordingly. Also, leave more than the recommended space (normally one car length for every 10 miles per hour the car is traveling) between you and the car in front of you.

Finally, this is an especially critical time of year to wear the seat belt or shoulder harness. Buckle up! It is the best protection against the other person's driving mistakes. If all helpful hints fail and you end up snowbound along the road, the SPEA researchers suggest running the motor for short periods of time to keep warm, but not long enough to use up the gas supply or to allow carbon monoxide to build up inside the vehicle. Check the exhaust to make sure it isn't clogged up with snow. Keep a blanket or two in the trunk of the car to provide extra warmth in case yon become stranded.

Candy bars, which provide quick energy, also should be part of this mini safety kit. Real-Landes Are Married Susan (Real) and Gary Landes Susan Real and Gary Landes. were married Nov. 29 during a 7:30 p.m. candlelight ceremony in First Presbyterian Church, Brownsville, Texas.
