Parties in opposition to having the county seat permanently located at Nogales have recently circulated a rumor to the effect that should Nogales obtain the county seat at the coming election an exhorbitant price will be charged for the ground necessary for the county buildings. The following extract from the minutes of the last meeting of the city council of Nogales, held Wednesday evening, Oct. 24th, shows the above rumor to be false, and will prove interesting reading to the citizens of Santa Cruz county. Land Free of Cost. Extract from the Miaotes of the Nogales City Council- The question was brought up of conveying land in Nogales to the county for county purposes.

Whereupon the mayor stated that as trustee under the U. patent for the towusite at Nogales and under the R. S. of Chap. 11, Para.

180, Sec. 14, he is required by the law to deed to the county any land that the supervisors deem necessary for a court house and other county purposes, and which the supervisors choose to select, and that as soon as they designated the land desired that the trustee was ready to execute a deed to the supervisors for the property. Free of cost. F. L.

Kiel, Clerk. W. F. Overton, Mayor. Dr.

A. H. Noon, our next legislative assemblyman will represent our little county iu a most satisfactory manner to his constituents. He is familiar with the needs of Every section of our county, having for years been a resident of what is now Santa Cruz county. He can be expected to took after the county's interests, intelligently, faithfully and well and it is the duty of those having the county's welfare at heart to help swell the doctor's major ity next Monday.

William J. Brya.v, has answered the query of the, Republicans as to his course, if elected, ia regard to silver, and it is to be hoped that they are sat is tied with the reply. Like Lincoln, Mr. Bryan refuses to cross a bridg until he comes to it, nor to construe before it is necessary a Republican iaw in regard to which Republicans differ so widely as they do on the gold law He says: "I want the Republicans wko ask that question to first find out what the law requires, and then waut them to know that if elected President I will enforce that law just as I will enforce the law against trusts. and put striped clothes ou big thieves as well as little thieves.

But if you ask. me to construe a Republican law I reply that shall not construe a law until it becomes my duty to enforce it." The editor of The Vidette begs the forgiveness of those of our citizens who were asked by him to subscribe for the Tncson Star. At the time Little Johnnie Hushes was in Noga les devoting his time iu telling of the greatness of the Star and the fin things it was going to do for the peo pie of Nogeles we pittied him, and helped him secure more subscribers here for the Star than that paper ever had in the whole of its misspent life, John was grateful and expresed hi in self iu verse and song of the niagnami ty of the people of Nogales. John was so grateful he talked of removing the Star to Nogales, the eounty seat of Santa Cruz county. He scoffed at the idea of removing the county seat from Nogales, where it rightfully be longs, and almost shed tears, when, after he had "worked" the town to a standstill he took his departure for Patagonia, where he remained several days in the interest of the Star.

He evidently was more successful in Pa tagania than in Nogales, or in other words, "Jratagonia went us one better." As a result the Star is now devoting a department to Patagonia, a little village up on the Sonoita river, as the proper place to locate the seat of government of Santa Cruz county. The paper that would advocate such an absurd piece of damn tommy rot, must have been properly "fixed" for otherwise it would not take the chances ot being black-listed in a com munity the size of Nogales. John Hughes will receive a warm (7) wel come when next he comes to Nosrales to get subscribers for the Star. The Vidette has during the past month received many communications from the various precinct lying out' side of Nogales, asking why this paper was not working for the county seat at Nogales. It was not necessary to do so.

Nothing had been done by the promotors of the removal in the matter of procuring voters from the outside at the time when they would have become illigable to vote When the registration closed, the men having charge of the proposition Had neglected to do the things ex pected of couuty seat boomers, and those of us who had carefully watched events knew there were not enough voters personally interested or fools and knaves in the county to vote the county seat away from our beautiful and prosperous city to a little village, whera the majority of the people are said to be miners who prospect the hills for precious metals. If they find theKi they remain. If they fail to strike it rich they move on. The Vidette hopes that Patagouia will become a good town and believes that in the years to come it will do so, but the luture ot a mining camp is a mighty uncertain proposition, as many mining men know. Have the backers of Patagonia any more right to say Patagonia and vicinity have a brighter future than Washington and vicinity? In this issue of The Vidette you will find some interesting "facts and figures" under the heading ef "citizens and taxpayers of Santa Cruc county," which shows beyond a question of a doubt that Nogales has every thing in its favor from a taxpayer' standpoint, to ask for the county -seat's permanent location here.

No matter how big a majority Nogales has over Patagonia, she will be one of the best advertised camps in seven states But R. R. Richardson has no hopes of Attention has recently been called to a most remarkable statement by Governor Roosevelt, who boasts, with details, how he shot a Spanish soldier at the battle of San Juan, while the latter was running from him and was only some thirty feet away. The Governor says: "When we reached the trenches we found them filled with dead bodies in the light blue-and white uniform of the Spanish regular. Lieutenant Davis' sergeant, Clarence Gould, killed a Spauish with his revolver just as the Spainard aiming at one of uiy Rough Ridera.

At about the same time, I also shot one. I was with Henry Bradshar, running up at the double, and two Spaniards leaped from the trenches not ten yards away. As they turned to run I closed in and tired twice, missing the first and killing the second At the time, I did not know of Gould's exploit and supposed my feat to be unique." "Certainly the Governor's action in telling of it is unique. So far as known no officer in modern warfare has Heretofore boasted of shooting down a flying enemy in cold blood. American officers and men have accepted the duty of fighting and killing the enemy as one of the sad necessities of war but have sought to win no glory-by gloating over the widows and orphans they were forced to make.

Other "great" wairiors have been forced to speed the fatal bullet or thrust the deadly sword, but they have sought to forget it. They certainly never boasted of it. Anoyne who questions the accuracy of this statement will find it related in Colonel Roosevelt's book. "The Rough Riders," printed immediately after the Spanish War. Political Announcement.
