The Torchbearers, (left to right) Vinnie Cioffi, Bob Doak, ond Jack Kincaid, present a program of modern gospel music as part of their music ministry, said the Rev. Walter C. Pierce, pastor of the First Assembly of God Church. NEW YORK A half eaten Danish and an abandoned cup of black coffee sat on a recording device covered with buttons and dials that dwarfed the dimly lit room. Sounds of rock music blared through the air, coming from behind a glass partition where a young man dressed in a tee shirt and jeans sang about "Coin" south of the border, gonna try to find some kind of order Other young college -students or recent grads in the j(iins and sneakers uniform piced the floor, listened in-tiihtly, and commented quietly to each other while the s'ifjger continued.

dim light, the cork wfills, and the Indian-pattern, Oriental type rug on the wall give the studio a cozy, co-cijon-like atmosphere from which something beautiful would hopefully grow. pilIS IS THE WORLD of 30-year-old Tom Picardo, kiown professionally asT. WHILE HE WAS THERE, luwever, Ton met his current partner, Terry Cash-p-an. then head of the publishing company there. The two recorded with a third partner as Cashman, Pistilli.

and West, writing and singing all their own works. That was when Tom Picardo was dubbed T. P. West. "They didn't want us working in promotion and writing under the same name," explains Tom.

In 1969 as The Buchanan Brothers, another alias, the group made "Medicine Man." That same year Cash-man and West wrote "Sausalito." for Al Martino. In 1970 they were asked by the producer of "The Partridge Family," to write music for the group's television show. That same year they did several commercials, among them, "Kodak makes your pictures count." AND THEN THEIR big break came. As Blendingwell Music they discovered. -4 i tL? 0 0 0 0 0 NOW SHOWING AT WALTER READE THEATRES Neptune City JMOf.

There's a lot of time involved, a lot of stopping" and starting, a lot of doing it over for just the right marketable sound. "The secret of good production," says Tom discussing his work, "is knowing when to stop. It's also a pood idea when you've got kids as bright as this (Temple City) to let them contribute to the production." From the Hit Factory, Temple City's tapes will be played to record companies Tom and Terry think are sympathetic to the particular kind of music. TOM HIMSELF PLAYS piano, guitar, bass, "anything you don't have to blow into." Terry plays guitar. Both write the lyrics and music for their songs, and both know all the facets of music produciton equally well, according to Tom.

Tom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Picardo, Bradley Beach, and has a younger sister and brother who are both musical and whom he predicts will probably end up in the business as well. He is married to the former Barbara Dodge, a dancer who specializes in Flamenco and Spanish ballet. When Tom visits his parents he sometimes has the opportunity to hear local groups.

"The trouble with most of them is that they are not original enough. The companies want originality in writing, especially, and then in sound," he comments. Of his job, Tom says, "I do what I want for a living, and that's something most people can't say." -BARBARA SCHOENEWEIS "Vote" for "The Candidate" Wed. saver gallon It's not cheaper, it just costs less. Jim's hit record and album provided a catalyst for the Blendingwell teams, who now spend most of their time producing records. However, Cashman and West have recently come out with an album of their own called, "A Song or Two," featuring "American City Suite." Their style is folk rock.

"We have always had record business recognition, but now we have public recognition," he says. Among the artists Cashman and West are handling are Steve Goodman, who wrote "City of New Orleans" for Arlo Guthrie, the William St. James Trio, and Jim Tragas. "We're never at a loss for acts," says Tom. "Once you do something popular, people seek you out." TOM EXPLAINS THAT it 13 a 1 stKyj big half BOBBY LEWIS' NITE GALLERY fri.
