With our Famed By ROBERT HILBl'RN The Los Angeles Times HOLLYWOOD Television and rork roll once were allies.

Dirk Clark's "American Bandstand" gave millions of teenagers in the 1950s their first glimpses of Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly. Fifty-six million tuned in for Elvis Presley's first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. The audience was up to 70 million in 14 for the Beatles' Sullivan performance. But TV and rock have been wary of each other in the 1970s. The best that most performers can hope for are the often synthetic, late-night "concert" shows.

When networks put a rocker on prime time, they saddle him with inappropriate guests and silly skits. There is, however, good news. TV and rock renew their alliance this week. Exactly 15 years after the Beatles sang "I Want to Hold Your Hand" on the Sullivan show, ABC gives us the most invognrating prime-time rock show in memory "Heroes of Rock 'n' Roll," a two-hour recap to air 9 p.m. Friday on Channels 6 and 7 on the personalities and incidents that made rock an explosive force.

AS A BOM'S, ABC also airs "Elvis'," a three-hour drama of rock's greatest star. The Dick Clark Productions film, which airs at 8 p.m. Sunday on Channels 6 and 7, is too literal to he a major document, but it exceeds in many ways "The Buddy Holly Story," a surprise cinematic hit of 1978. For those too young to have experienced rock's 25-year story, "Heroes of Rock 'n' Roll" is a valuahle primer. For those who cheered or Jeered the arrival of Presley and or the Beatles, the special is a marvelous slice of nostalgia.

Rock's greatest are featured Little Richard, Jerry Ijk Lewis, Fats Domino from the 1950s; the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin from the 19(Vis; David Bowie, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen from the 1970s Rather than turn to a single source years of American producer-directors Andrew Snlt and Malcolm sifted through 4 million feet of newsreel, movie, TV and concert footage for material. APPROXIMATELY 20 percent of the six dozen sequences in "Heroes" never have been shown on American TV. Most of the re maining footage will be seen for the first time since its original air date. Among the exclusives: a slice of Presley's 1956 screen test for "Love Me the Beatles singing at Liverpool's Cavern Club two years before the Sullivan show; a number from Dylan's never-released "Eat the Document" movie, and teen riots in Boston at an Alan Freed-sponsored concert in the 1950s. Freed was the disc jockey whose career was dramatized in "American Hot Wax." But the heart of "Heroes" is material that was shown on TV in the '50s and '60s and then filed on a library shelf.

Solt and Ieo tracked down the footage with a detective's determination and then assembled it with a canny sense for what was important In the music's development. The choicest moments include Presley's gyrating performance on the Milton Berle show, which sparked so many viewer complaints that Presley was photographed only from the waist up on his subsequent Sullivan show appearance. ALSO: THE BEATLES af the Hollywood Bowl, Otis Redding's final performance he-fore his death in a 1967 plane crash, a mid-'60s Rolling Stones' rendition of "Satisfaction," which was censored (by ABC-TV, ironically) to avoid the offending words "trying to make some girl." And on and on. The key to the show's charm and vitality is that Solt and Leo approached it both as rock fans and as disciplined TV-film docu-mentarians. Too often, network specials get their facts right but lack heart.

"Heroes" succeeds on both levels. To illustrate adult scorn for rock in the '50s, "Heroes" replays comedian Steve Allen's mocking recitation of the admittedly simplistic lyrics of Gene Vincent's hit "Be Bop a Lula." Solt and Leo follow the Allen clip with Vincent's own sensual version of "Be Bop a Lula" from a '50s rock exploitation film. The stress in "Heroes" is on music, but there are references to rock's sociocultural impact. We see the sociological fallout of parental outcry that all but drove rock off the airwaves in the early '60s, the Beatles-led rebound in 1904 and the Bob Dylan-assisted turn toward social comment. make it right.
