She expertly switches between Channel 4 and Channel 7 as many times as she can during the 90 seconds or so that each station presents its nightly weathercast. Joan Field isn't interested in getting the most up-to-date forecasts, she just wants to watch both of her favorite TV weathermen, who are on the air at the same time. On Channel 4 NBC's flagship station in New York City the forecasts are delivered by her husband, Frank Field. On Channel 7 ABC's standard-bearer predictions for the next day's outlook come from her son. Storm Field.

They don't always jibe. TWENTY SEVEN i-YEAR-old Storm was hired last March as WABC medical-science reporter a position his father holds at WNBC. A trained meteorologist, like his father, Storm stepped in front of the cameras as a weatherman for the first time when Hurricane Belle struck Long Island in August and WABC's regular weatherman, Tex Antoine, was ill. Storm did such a good job that the station asked him to continue doing the 11 p.m. and weekend forecasts.

Storm admits that when he was faced with that first on-the-air weathercast, he relied on the methods and mannerisms he had seen his father using for so many years. And, even after weeks on the air, there is still a close resemblance between the way the Fields deliver their predictions. degree from the Massachusetts College of Optometry and he worked hard to convince TV station operators that there was a need for medical-science reporting as well as weather forecasting. He eventually pioneered such reporting on the air. He practiced optometry for several months in Portland, Maine, before returning to New York. Through his father, he met the head of a television features syndication firm and was asked if he would like to do some features on medicine and science. After some of his work appeared through the syndicate, an independent station in the city hired him as a free-lance reporter.

Sometimes you try to give him a nudge if he needs it, of course, but if you're working on something big you don't tell him. "One of the most disheartening things is I'll do something I'm really proud of and I'll think is good and I'll call home and ask his mother, 'Did you see my and she'll say, 'Oh, no, I was watching Storm practically revels in the competition. "I wiped him out on that one," Storm says with a big grin, noting that WABC sent him to Philadelphia the very night the story broke, while WNBC waited nearly four days before sending Frank to Atlanta for a catch-up show from the federal Center for Disease Control.
