The author is a graduate of Long Branch High School. He attended Monmouth College when it was a two-year college. He has dedicated the book to his parents, Mrs. George R. Pettit, formerly of Long Branch, and the late Mr.

Pettit. He received his bachelor degree in chemistry from Washington State University. He received both his masters degree and his Ph. D. at Wayne State University, Detroit.

He is professor of chemistry and past chairman of the organic chemistry division at Arizona State University, as well as adviser to the National Cancer Institute, and member of the Cancer Chemotherapy Advisory Committee of the National Institutes of Health. A fellow of the American Institute of Che-American Institute of Chemists, Dr. Pettit is a member of the American Chemical Society (London), Phi Lambda Upsilon, the Society of Sigma Xi, and the American Association of University Professors. Since 1954, Dr. Pel tit has published over 150 articles.
