ft tticaia tsstszx oicaiT. mem. TO CLEAN CARPETS. If you have a carpet that looks dingy and you wish to restore it to its original freshness, make a stiff lather of Ivory Soap and warm water and scrub it, width by width, with the lather. Wipe with a clean damp sponge.

Do not apply more water than necessary. The vegetable oils of which Ivory Soap is made, and its purity, fit it for many special uses for which other soaps are unsafe and unsatisfactory. COPYRIGHT IM BV THC PBOCTIR 0MBLt CO CICINTI That Smallpox Scare. Last Friday, the city wns thrown into a state of excitement by the report that we had a case of smallpox in town. A little later, two cases were reported.

Of course, everybody was seared. Here are the facts: John Vaughn, who had been working as nn undertaker in Kansas City, and had been exposed to smallpox (so it was reported), had returned a few days before the report was circulated. He was not well when he came home, and Thursday he showed signs smallpox. The physicians decided it was smallpox, and the house was quarantined. However, about twenty of John's friends had spent Wednesday evening with him, and they were quarantined and the quarantine has not been raised yet.

Careful examination within the past two days has proved that John has only light case of varioloid. He has not been confined to his bed at all. The second case was that of Miss Kate Her. She had visited Kansas City, and it was reported that she had been exposed to smallpox. She became indisposed, and wns in bed one day.

A doctor was called, who said her ailment might be smallpox. The premises was immediately quarantined, and so remained until it was ascrtained that she had measles in a light form. She is now as well as ever, and the quarantine has been raised. These ore the only cases. The report has gone forth that Garnett has 160 cases of smallpox; that there were lour deaths in one day, etc.

Many i oUnct people in me munuj mivt scared out of their wits, nnd they can be blamed, cither. There is not the least danger, however; for, while we only have one case of varioloid, it is quarantined, 'an 1 those whojvisited Vaughn are quarantined, and the quarantine will not be raised until nil danger is over. No Smallpox in Garnett. Sumors having gained wide circulation that there are a number of smallpox coses in this city, I desire to state for the benefit of the public that there is not one case here. There is one case of varioloid, but the house occupied by the patient, with nil the occupants thereof, and all the oersons who have been in any way I mvebcen in any way I strict quarantine, and autions have been tak exposed are under all necassnry precauti en to prevent the spread of this disease.

People from the country and elsewhere need have no fear of being infected by 1 reason of coming to this city. There was one case which wns reported to be smallpox, and the house was quarantined. This quarantine has been removed after lapse of some days nnd after four reputable, practicing physicians, including the public health officer, have stated their examinations in writing nnd their opin- ton that there is not about this patient the slightest trace or symptom of an eruptive fcver of any kind.
