And he suggested returning volunteers might be worthwhile candidates for foreign service careers. Sargent Shriver, director of the corps, said this on a recorded TV-radio program with Sen. Hugh Scott, a Republican, and Joseph S. Clark, a Democrat, both of Pennsylvania.

Sen. Scott questioned Mr. Shriver persistently and critically about the practicality and cost of the Peace Corps program. He said he'd had many letters asking, "How are you goir.g to he sure that if this is such an emotionally attractive program th-it the Communists will not move in and infiltrate?" Sen. The new Pershing has many advantages over the more cumbersome, stationary Redstone. Because it uses a solid propel-lant, it can be kept ready to fire at a moment's notice.

The Redstone uses liquid oxygen and can be loaded only at the last minute. This exchange then followed: Exchange Quoted Scott: "Mr. Shriver does that mean there will be an FBI clearance on all these people?" Shriver: "That will be determined by the director of the FBI, not bv me." Scott: "If not by the FBI, will there be some form of security clearance?" Shriver: "Definitely." Mr. Scott said a Negro newspaper suggested that the Peace Corps might be all right for young people from wealthy white families but less fortunate Negro youths would just be throwing away their time, economically. Seen as Great Aid Mr. Shriver differed, saying Peace Corps training "could be of great assistance to the exact people you're talking about young Negro Americans, or, as a matter of fact, any young Americans who are interested in getting themselves additional skilk Skills in foreign languages, skills that would equip them, for ox-ample, perhaps to become members of our foreign service." Holmdel Township also'is participating in national defense today. Located in the Crawfords Corner section is a Nike antiaircraft base which is part of the Nike defense ring surrounding the New York metropolitan area. Holmdel Township was formed in 1357 when a 17.9 square mile area broke away from Middle-tjwn Township. Before that Holmdel was known as Upper Middletown and Middletown Point. The settlement of Holmdel dates back to the mid-17th Century.

The Holmdel Baptist Church and the Middletown Baptist Church both date to 1663 and are the oldest Baptist churches in the state. While populations soared to the north in Haritan Township and to the east in Middle-town Township, Holmdel Township saw only an influx of about 230 new homes during the decade.

The population increased from 1.380 to 2,959 during the 10 years. How much longer before housing developments descend upon the township, rich in potential for home building, is anybody's guess. But if and when a housing boom does come, it is expected that the township will be ready for it. The reason: It has the experience of its neighbors to look to in order to avoid the same growing pains they went through. In Knviable Position And at the same time the township will be in the enviable position of having its idustrial and commercial growth precede its residential growth.

A $1 million Bcndix plant was opened in Holmdel Village last year. The new Bell Laboratories Research Center off Crawfords Corner road will be nearing completion the end of this year, and work on a Lily Tulip Cup Corp. paper products' plant is expected to get under way this summer off Route 33 in the Centerville section. However, the local Planning Board has not yet reached an agree-men on revisions for residential zoning.

Holmdel Township has excellent transportation facilities. It is practically bisected by Garden State Parkway. State Route 35 and the New York and Long Branch Railroad run through the northern section of the township making that area attractive for industrial development. State Route 34 runs along the western part of the township. Although most interior thoro-fares are narrow two lane roads, all are hard surfaced.

The three man Township Committee is planning a $730,000 road improvement program which calls for the widening of Roberts, Red Hill, Longstreet and Crawfords corner roads. Has Three Schools Holmdel Township has three elementary schools with an enrollment nearing 550 pupils. The newest school, the Holmdel Elementary School off Keyport Holmdel road, was opened in September 1958. The other two schools are located in Holmdel Village and in Centerville. High school students attend high schools in Keyport and Red Bank.

Except for the Hazlet and Centerville sections, the township does not have public water serv- ice. The township has no mu- nicipal garbage service. Resi- I dents arrange for their own garbage collection through private contractors. The township has only one po- liceman, a part-time chief, but is served by state police in the i nearby Keyport barracks. Holmdel Township gained in- i tcrnational prominence last summer when Bell Labs scien- tist here conducted the first i cross country telephone call by way of a man-made satellite.
