It will be remembered that one of the Pittsburg police officers was killed at the corner of Wood st. and Sixth ave. a short time ago. With the proposed system the officer will not be required to stand in the street, but will be on the corner of the pavement.

Similar systems are being experimented with in other cities with success, notably in Philadelphia. If this signaling system is successful a more elaborate system will be installed, and the director's intention frs to place a. small lookout station, composed chiefly -of glass and metal, to be placed about eight feet above the pavement, and Just large enough for one man, so that the man operating the system will have a full view of the street crossing, and at the same time be protected in bad weather, as the lookout station will be heated and made comfortable. For this trial installation, however, the officer will simply stand on the corner of the pavement. The temporary "Installation will be made about the first of the year.

LANKETS JR. husband of Sadie Reckley, in his 49t year. Director Robert Swan, of the department of public works, will install, as an experiment, an electric traffic signaling system at the intersection of Sixth ave. and Smithfield st. If this temporary system proves successful.

Director Swan will install them at all important street crossings where cornermen are stationed. Eight signals of the style shown in the accompanying photograph will be placed. The signals have a 10-inch red lens to indicate to stop, and a 10-inch green lens to indicate to start. Each signal will be lighted by a 100-Watt lamp. -Director Swan's idea is not to do away with the traffic officers, but to secure? a more safe and practicable signaling system for the regulation of street traffic.
