Asbury Park Nov. 7, 1382 D3 Telegraph office closing reflects technology change Excel Wood comes out of Chapter 11 LAKEWOOD The vice president of Excel Wood Products which emerged from a Chapter 11 reorganization last month, says the company will progress in the future. Simon Weisz, vice president of 'the company located on Prospect and Massachusetts Avenues, said the "company is confident that its role as a prominent leader in the industry and as an employer in the Ocean County area will not only- be maintained but progress in the future." Excel, which produces kitchen cabinets and bathroom fixtures, employs more than Business Beat I HX to KTP i 300 people, Weisz said. Excel filed for a business reorganiza tion under Chapter 11 of the federal bank ruptcy code March 1981 after the company saw a 510 million drop in sales to J26 mil lion. Weisz said then that the filing! for Chapter 11 was not a financial bankruptcy but a technical one which would allow them time to renegotiate loans from batiks planning to file suit against them.

Li frWr 2 Following the 1980 drop in business -the company fell into default on three bank loans because the net worth of Excel had dropped to $550,000, Weisz said. The loans were granted on terms that allowed them to remain unsecured as long as the company's net worth remained ai $5 million, he said. MC DANIEL Business Editor THE WESTERN UNION Telegraph Company office in Asbury Park will be closing sometime in December partly the consequence of reduced business but partly the victim of a changing Western Union. "The Bullet Lock and Safe Company (Main Street, Asbury Park) will provide all the services currently provided by our office," according to Richard A. McNeil, city manager of agency operations for New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. "We are in the process of centralizing and computerizing," he said. "The volume of business Just doesn't justify us keeping a full-time office here." He predicted that the part-time agency at Bullet Lock and Safe would be handling about nine transactions a day as the Western Union office does now.

Western Union employs three full-time agents at its Mattison Avenue office. Those employees will get furlough notices soon and have bumping rights over agents with less seniority in the Trenton, Atlantic City and Paterson offices. Somewhere down the line, though, three people are going to lose their jobs. The closing of the Asbury Park office is a result of the changing character of Western Union a company that has been agile and progressive enough to change with the times. There was a time when Western Union's sole business was transmitting telegrams back and forth across the country.

That's not the case today. Western Union messengers, who were once active in even the samllest hamlets in the country, today are used only in larger cities. "Although we still have telegrams their use has gone way down," McNeil said. "The increased use of Mailgrams, however, has more than made up for the decline." In addition to the booming business in Mailgrams, Western Union has several other services from which it derives income. "One of our most used services is money orders," McNeil said, "and that'll make up the bulk of the business that the new agent (in Asbury Park) will handle." There are two ways to send money by Western Union.

The most common and frequently used way is to physically show up at a Western Union office, hand over the money and tell the agent where you want it sent. The more modern way, however, is to call a central Western Union number and, using your Visa or Master Charge number, have the money sent that way. "A lot of our operations are computerized," McNeil said. Another service of Western Union is the Telex or Telex services. This service is used mainly by businesses that want instantaneous, written communication internally between offices or with other businesses.

The Telex service delivers 63 words a minute and the Telex delivers 100 words a minute. In either case a Telex machine is bought or rented from Western Union and rates for circuit rental are based on distance and the amount of time used. Even if an intended recipient does not have a Telex machine, the sender can dial up a central computer feed in the message and it is delivered by more traditional methods like a telegram. Earlier this year Western Union won permission to operate international telex and telegraph services for the first time in 39 years and it has been expanding those operations ever since. Another expanding business for Western Union is the Metrofone service.

Like MCI, Sprint and others, Western Union is going into competition with the Bell System's long distance telephone service. In operation for only two years, Metrofone is not yet available in all areas of the country but the service is expanding. But the money order business continues to be a fast growing and widely used service. McNeil, who is based in the Atlantic City office, sees he has seen an increased need for the service in that city since the advent of casinos. "Most of the casinos have machines at the teller cages.

If a person needs money they can call a relative or even use their own Visa or Mastercard to 1 order tmselves a check. Five minutes after we have received the order, a check can be rinting out at the casino," McNeil said.
