The holiday itself dates back to 165 B.C. The outnumbered Jewish army defeated the Syrian Greeks and returned to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. They set out to cleanse and rededicate the Temple, but found only enough oil to burn for a single day. Yet, tradition holds that the small flask of oil lasted eight days, a miracle celebrated each year at Hanukkah.

During the eight days of the holiday which begins at sundown on Dec. 3 this year families light their own menorahs to recall the ancient miracle. They recite three blessings over the candles the first night and two each night after that. Tradition calls for the shamash or helper candle to be either higher or lower than the others. That candle is lit first and then used to light the others one the first night, two the second and so on.

The eight candles representing the days of the holiday should be of the same height so that no single night of Hanukkah takes on more significance of the others.
