Dead From Strep In Chicago Area AURORA, III (AP) A duster of cases involving a deadly form of strep bacteria that has caused five Chicago-area deaths has prompted health officials to raise public awareness of the illness. Although health officials say the outbreak is not an epidemic, they admitted the number of infections, at least 11, is unusual.

Kane County Medical Director Dr. David Lucks said Sunday people have been diagnosed with Group A streptococcal infection. Most were in Kane County, with Lake and Cook counties each reporting one. The most recent case, involving an elderly Aurora man, was diagnosed Friday, Lucks said. The Illinois Health Department and the US.

Centers for Disease Control were investigating the source of the infections and whether the cases were related, officials said "The same stereotype would suggest some common source and be easier to find," Lucks said. If it's all different kinds of strep, its not going to be one simple solution to the problem." Symptoms for Strep A include a sore throat, fever, chills and painful swelling of the joints and limbs. People with those symptoms should be tested for the bacterium within the first 12 to 24 hours, officials said The infection can be rendered not contagious after 24 hours of medical treatment Beanies Continued from Page A1 in the US. for $300, Bowman said. So beware the very expensive babies, he said.

Make sure the dealer is reputable. If you're going to spend that much, do some research and get to know the product so you can spot a fake, he said. Or take another collector with you who knows what to look for. Learning about Beanie Babies is easy. There's even a magazine, Mary Beth's Beanie world, and if you really want to spend hours and hours, check out the HOSPITAL NOTES Internet for an astounding number of Beanie Babies Web sites.

"Originally, people bought them to play with, but the salesmen kept saying that someday they'd be very valuable, and so the collecting began," Bowman said. Today, the earliest ones, in mint condition, can fetch $4,000. Early Beanie Babies who are missing the tags or have bent tags, might still command $2,000, Bowman said. And that's good enough for Ingram. "Do I like them?" she said.

"I don't know. But if I can pay $4.95 for something that will be worth $400 some day, then yes, I like them."
