30 Kokomo (Ind.) Tribune Sunday, Nov. 6, 1988 Indiana Hoosiers' junior tailback Anthony Thompson, pictured in a game earlier in the season against Ohio State, managed to score a touchdown in Saturday's 21-20 loss to Illinois (Tribune photo by Darcy Draeger) Michigan keeps on winning By The Associated Press At Ann Arbor, the battle for the Little Brown Jug turned into a survival of the fittest. Mike Gillette kicked five field goals and Tony Boles rushed for 184 yards on 32 carries in a constant, driving rain to lead No. 14 Michigan to a 22-7 victory over Minnesota in Big Ten football action Saturday. The victory improved Michigan, leaders in the Big Ten, to 6-2-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the conference.

A Michigan win over Illinois next week would put the Wolverines in the Rose Bowl. Minnesota fell to 2-5-2 and 0-4-2. The victory was costly for Michigan, however. Starting quarterback Michael Taylor broke his collarbone on Michigan's first play from scrimmage and is out for the season. Boles also pulled a groin muscle in the contest.

His status is uncertain. "I'm just glad we won, when you get into a situation like we had losing our quarterback for the year on the first play of the game, combined with the weather, I'm just glad we came out with a win," Michigan coach Bo Schembechler said. Gillette's effort broke the Michigan single-game record of four field goals set by Bob Wood in 1975 and tied by Bob Bergeron in 1984. "They were all chip shots. They were all short, I was expected to make them," said Gillette, who has not missed a field goal in Michigan's past six games.

Greg McMurtry caught a. 23- yard touchdown pass from Demetrius Brown in the fourth quarter for Michigan's other score. Michigan gained 253 yards on the ground and 115 through the air. Boles' effort marked the fourth time this season that he has gained over 150 yards in one game. The Michigan record of five in a season is held by Jamie Morris and Rob Lytle.

The Wolverine defense held Minnesota tailback Darrell Thompson to 46 yards, well below his 102.6 average. Last year, Thompson became the first back ever to gain 200 yards in a game against Michigan. "Thompson ran well when he had the ball," Golden Gophers coach John Gutekunst said. "We didn't want the defense keying on Thompson, we wanted them spread across the field." Boles had 17 carries in the first half before Minnesota had even run 17 plays from scrimage. "We did a good job on Darrell Thompson, he didn't get too much, Schembechler said.

"By the same token, Boles ran real well for us. He had a lot of yards the rain didn't stop Tony Boles." "The Little Brown Jug" is a trophy that has been awarded to the winner of Michigan-Minnesota games since 1909. Minnesota's only score came in the final period on Scott Schaffner's 1-yard run with left. Michigan jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Gillette's 18-yard field goal at 4:41 of the first quarter to cap a 14-play, 72-yard drive. Boles accounted for most of the drive, gaining 40 yards on eight carries.

In the second quarter, Michigan safety Tripp Welbourne returned a Schaffner interception 18 yards to the Minnesota 24-yard line. The Wolverines drove 16 yards on six Big Ten roundup plays, and Gillette kicked a 25- yard field goal with 7:27 left until halftime. On the ensuing kickoff, Michigan's Lance Dottin recovered Chris Gaiters' fumble at the Gophers' 26-yard line. Seven plays later, Gillette kicked another 25- yarder with 4:33 left for a 9-0 lead. Minnesota then drove to the Michigan 4-yard line, but Welbourne recovered Schaffner's fumble with five seconds left in the half.

Iowa improved to 5-3-2 overall and 3-1-2 in the conference, while Northwestern fell to 1-7-1, 1-4-1 in the Big Ten. Stewart did most of the damage in the first quarter, carrying the ball eight times for 55 yards in a 12-play scoring drive culminated by Richard Bass' 11-yard touchdown run with 9:06 left.

Iowa made it 14-0 early in the second quarter when nose guard Dave Haight intercepted quarterback Greg Bradshaw's pass on the Northwestern 26. Hawkeye quarterback Chuck Hartlieb directed an eight-play drive that ended with Bell scoring on a six- yard drive off left tackle, and Jeff Skillett converted the point-after kick. Bell, a 6-foot-3, 256-pound red- shirt freshman, scored again from three yards out with 13:01 left in the third quarter to give Iowa a 28-3 lead. Preceding Bell's two scores were Stewart's 5-yard touchdown run 36 seconds before halftime set up by Keaton Smiley's interception of a Bradshaw pass and a 31-yard field goal by Ira Adler with 8:01 left in the third quarter for Northwestern's first points. Another Northwestern turnover Bradshaw's fumble on his own 23 led to Hartlieb's 3-yard touchdown pass to tight end Marv Cook that made the score 35-3.

Hartlieb completed 18 of 26 passes for 224 yards. Ohio St. 34, Wisconsin 12 At Columbus, Ohio, Greg Frey ran for one touchdown and passed for two others all in a span of 6:05 of the second quarter as Ohio State defeated Wisconsin 3412 in a Big Ten Conference game Saturday. The victory put an end to a two-game losing streak for Ohio State, 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the Big Ten, and kept alive the Buckeyes' hopes of averting their first losing season since 1966. The loss was the llth straight for Wisconsin, 0-9 and 0-6, which had beaten Ohio State in five of the last seven meetings.

Wisconsin, last among all NCAA Div. I-A schools in scoring, led 6-3 after one quarter, scoring on Leon Hunt's 1-yard run on the Badgers' first possession of the game. But Ohio State scored on a 21- yard pass from Frey to Marc Hicks on the second play of the second quarter for a 10-3 lead. The Buckeyes' Vince Clark then blocked a punt by Brad Brekke on Wisconsin's ensuing possession to give Ohio State the ball at the Wisconsin 16. Two plays later, on first and goal at the 1, Frey ran into one of his own players and fumbled the ball, but caught it in midair and fell into the end zone for a 17-6 Buckeye lead.

After a Wisconsin punt, the teams traded turnovers, with Jim Peel intercepting a Lionell Crawford pass to give Ohio State the ball at the Wisconsin 34. Four more plays and Frey hit Jeff Graham on a 13-yard scoring pass for a 24-6 Ohio State lead. Ohio State did all the scoring in the second half, on Pat O'Mor- row's second field goal of the ime and a 9-yard run by Scotty raham. (AP) Illinois quarterback Jeff George had put the game-winning touchdown pass into Mike Bellamy's hands, and Bellamy was not about to let (tie Indiana defender take it away from him in the end zone. "He tried to strip it but wasn't going to let go," said Belllamy, who hung onto the five-yard pass with 26 seconds left in the game to give Illinois a 21-20 victory over the 20th-ranked Hoosiers.

"Mike just made a great grab," said George, who brought the Illini back at the end of the game with two TD passes in less than two minutes. "I have confidence in him and I knew he was going to come down with it." George had cut the Hoosiers' lead to five points at 2:06 with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Wax, then moved the Illini into position for the victory after a crucial Indiana fumble. "It's one of the greatest comebacks that I've ever been involved in," said Illinois Coach John Mackovic. "Our guys just showed how much spirit they have that rare ability to overcome obstacles and play better than anyone would expect." The victory improved the Illini record to 5-3-1, including a 4-1-1 mark in the Big Ten. Indiana fell to 6-2-1, including a 4-2 conference record.

"I certainly give Illinois credit they hung right in there and fought back," said Indiana Coach Bill Mallory. "I think we hurt ourselves more than anything. We didn't do the things in the end that we had to do to win it." George's two key TD passes came after a freak fumble recovery and touchdown by Indiana had dimmed Illinois' chances. Erick Coleman stole an Illinois pass from Keith Jones and raced 47 yards to the end zone at 3:33 to give the Hoosiers a 20-9 lead. But, George quickly narrowed the Hoosier's lead with the TD pass to Wax, and linebacker Julyon Brown recovered a fumble by Indiana quarterback Dave Schnell at the Hoosier 31-yard-line with 1:48 to play to set up the winning Illini drive and TD pass.

Indiana dominated the first half, with Anthony Thompson scoring on a one-yard run in the first quarter and Pete Stoyanovich kicking a 28-yard field goal in the second quarter for a 104) halftime lead. Illinois trimmed the Hoosier lead to 10-9 in the third quarter, as George fired a 31-yard touchdown pass to Bellamy, and Patrick Donnelly blocked an Indiana punt for a safety. Stoyanovich opened the fourth quarter with a 27-yard field goal.

On Indiana's opening 86-yard drive, Schnell ran for 12 yards, then he fired passes of 14 yards and 11 yards to Tony Buford and Rob Turner to set up Thompon's touchdown dive and a 7-0 lead. A fumbled snap by Hoosier holder Tim Jordan kept Pete Stoyanovich from trying a 34-yard field goal in the first quarter. But, an 18-yard pass from Schnell to Cal Miller and a 13-yard run by Thompson in the second quarter put Stoyanovich in position for the 28-yard field goal and a 104) lead. Illini punter Brian Menkhausen gave Indiana good field position with consecutive kicks of 18 yards, IS yards and 7 seven yards in the second quqarter. But, Schnell twice was intercepted deep in Illinois territory oy Mel Agee at the 21 and by Henry Jones at the 6 and the Hoosiers had to settle for the 10-point halftime margin.

George finally got the Illini on the Scoreboard in the third quarter with the first TD pass to Bellamy. Then, Illinois picked up two more points, after Donnelly blocked an Indiana punt and it rolled through the end zone for a safety, trimming the Hoosier lead to 10-9. Stoyanovich widened the Indiana margin to four points with his second field goal as the fourth quarter began. And, Coleman appeared to put the game out of Illinois' reach when he snatched the pass from Jones' and dashed 47 yards for the TD and a 20-9 Hoosier lead.
