1 Sears The vacancy creates a chance tor the Democrats to increase their small 44-36 majority in the Assembly. In Mr. Olszowy's district, the other assemblyman, William J. Bate, and the senator, Joseph Hirkala, are both Democrats. To fill the vacancy, the Assembly must issue a writ of elections.

It could schedule either a special primary and election in the district, which would cost the state money, or include the seat in this November's elections. If the Assembly chooses a November election, which is likely, It would have to act soon to give candidates time to file for the June 3 primary. The filing deadline is Thursday. the Assembly waits until after Thursday, which is likely, the Democratic and Republican party organizations in Passaic County would nominate the candidates. MRS.
