Thomas had another night blooming cereus in bloom last Friday evening. Eleven flowers were out and presented a rich appearance, whilst the perfume was exquisite. Fortunately it was quite calm, otherwise the damage must inevitably have been much more extensive. Whilst the building and contents were not worth much in the market, yet they were "Uncle" Davy's all in this line, and the loss falls heavily upon an aged and hard working colored man.

Our enterprising friend Mr. Clias. W. Brown has kindly presented us a Charles Town souvenir coffee spoon. It is something handsome, made of solid sterling silver, and whilst it does not bear, as our neighbor of the JFree Press suggests, an inscription setting forth that "John Brown's first victim at Harper's Ferry was an colored man," yet, it has in the bowl the name of John Brown, and a representation of his hanging upon the scaffold at this place, whilst the handle is handsomely ornamented with the historic name of "Charles Town, W.

Va." The many visitors, to our of them John Brown Brown worshippers, and others frequently expressed a desire for some souvenir to take away with them. The enterprise of Mr. Brown supplies that want, and the Charles Town Souvenir Spoon" can hereafter be found pt liis jewelry store ou Main street, Personal Mention. Walter L. Wilson leaves for Lehigh to-day. Capt. John Howard went to Goshen, yesterday. Rev.

Rumsey Smithson was in town yesterday. Hon. B. D. Gibson went to Baltimore j'esterday.

Mr. Mallorie has been ill, but. is now convalescent. Mr. Van Lear Lippitt leaves for Lehigh on Thursday.

Miss Bessie Knipe, of Baltimore, is visiting friends here. Miss Minnie Ilarreil is visiting her sister at Harper's Perry. Miss Mary Howell is visiting her brothers in Charles Town. Itev. W.

P. Locke is on a visit to his father near Summit Point. Mr. Joseph Crane, of Roanoke, has been visiting bis relatives here. The Misses Loose, of Ilazerstowu, are visiting Miss Mary Kennedy.

Miss Edna Morrison visited her uncle in Harper's Ferry last week. Mr. Jno. O. has gone on a business trip to Southwest Virginia.

Mr. James of Indiana, is on a visit to his brother, Mr. C. Carrell. Mr.

and Mrs. Forrest W. Brown and son have returned from Capon Springs. Master Alex. Neill, of Ilagerstown, is visiting at the home of his uncle, Dr.

Neil I. Miss Bessie C'opeland, of Baltimore, visited the Misses Easterday last week. Mr. and Mrs. M.

E. Bolinger spent Sunday with Mr. parents in Ilagerstown. Hon. Wm.

L. Wilson and Capt. George Baylor have returned from their Lake trip. The wife and children of Lieut. E.

S. Avis are visiting the latter's sisters in this place. Miss Cora Belle Atkinson, of Gonzales. Texas, is visiting the family of Rev. Dr.

Hopkins. Mr. George Lambright and daughter, of Ivnoxville, Shannondale Springs. Mrs. Ilattie Wolf, of Carlisle, has been visiting her parents, Capt.

John Howard and wife. Capt. Eugene Baker attended the Shenandoah Baptist Association at Rockland, last week. Mr. Joseph Baker and wife, of Bowling Green, are visiting Mr.

parents near Leetown. Mrs. John T. Trussell has been visiting Woodlawn Camp and her mother in Cecil county, Md. Mr.

Harry Tutwiler, who has been visiting his parents here, returned to Philadelphia on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thomas, of Frederick Citv, have been visiting Mr. Albert Dichl and family.

Mr. Edward Dichl and mother, and Miss Sophia Hermann, of Frederick City, are at Mr. Louis Diehl's. Miss Bessie Snavely, of Sharpsburg, spent several days last week with Mrs. M.

Wynkoop is attending court in Shenandoah county, and will be absent from town this week. Mr. Charles Hermann, who has been visiting Mr. Louis Diehl, returned home to Frederick City yesterday. Mr.

Edward Mattbrei is spending a few days at the parental home in Baltimore, for the recuperation of his health. Mr. and Mrs. Adam Young and Miss Lucy Young returned last week from a visit to friends in Loudouu county, Va. The Misses Estep and Miss Brehme, who have been visiting Miss Laura Kennedy, left for their homes in Maryland on Saturday.

The St. Paul, papers announce the engagement of Mr. Charles Porterfield to Miss Catharine Knox Taylor, of that City. Mr. Ilenry Bedinger Swearingin has been lip from Washington City, visiting his relatives linn.

John T. Colston, Miss Bessie Coition and Miss Lucilla Yates visited the Baptist Association at Rockland, Warren county, last week. Misses Minnie and Emma Legg, daughters of Col. John C. Logg, of Baltimore, are spendiug part of their vacation with their aunt Mrs.

Geo. W. Taylor. Mrs. Maud Bauserman, of Woodstock, spent a short while in Charles Town last Wednesday, en route to the parental home in Hliepherdstown.

Miss Patty Moon, of Scottsville, Albemarle county, and Miss Peedie Roper, of Petersburg," two of Virginia's most charming young ladies, are visiting Miss Christine Chew. Mr. m. Beall, Supt. of the Charles Town, W.

Building and 'Construction Company, spent several days in Goshen. He has large interests here and is pleased with the outlook for our Blade. Mr. Herbert Barbee, the wellknown Virginian artist, gave us a pleasant call last Tuesday. Mr.

15arbee, it will be recollected, is preparing the statue of a Confederate soldier to be erected at Luray, Va. Braxton Davenport will return to the West Virginia University. Frank Manniug, who was at Blacksburg last year, will go to Morgantown, as will also Arthur Thomas, who was in Baltimore last year. Jefferson county will be represented in all by some six or seven students at the West Virginia University nesct session, Church Items. The Presbytery of Winchester will meet in Moorelield, Wednesday, Sentember 10.

1 The Rev. Frank Aglionby of London, preached in Zion (Episcopal) Church last Rev. M. S. Reed will begin a protracted meeting at Shenandoah Junction next Sunday night, at 74 o'clock.

Governor Fleming has pardoned Howard Fidinger, Kdward Allen and George Fry, who were jointly indicted in Jefferson county for larceny and sentenced to two years' confinement in the State penitentiary. The boys were between fifteen and eighteen years of age at the time the offense was committed, and their pardon was recommended by the judge who tried them, the State Senators from this district, the two members of the House of Delegates from Jefferson county and the prosecuting attorney of this county.
