C12 The Pittsburgh Press Saturday, January 13, 1990 TELEVISION KDKA continues with changes Tiven quits as WQEX boss, takes cable job in California The news department also has been reorganized. Sports commentator Bill Currie's job has been eliminated and Currie let go, and internal department heads have been reassigned. Assistant News Director Jim Esser is now managing editor, Executive Producer Jocelyn Hough is now executive producer of news programming and Senior Producer Chuck Samuels is now executive producer. Samuels and Hough used to be below Esser on the organizational flow chart; now all three are equal. But Mclnerney says "nobody's been demoted," despite the shift in titles.

"They all always reported to me This better defines their roles." Mclnerney says the reorganization, in news at least, is over, and no more jobs will be eliminated. Though Mclnerney says "the changes are certainly going to help us become more cost-efficient," neither she nor Adair will say how much money has been saved by them. With the new structure in place, Adair says KDKA is now "reorganized for the '90s. "It's a clearer organization; it's a more efficient organization." (Robert Bianco is The Pittsburgh Press TV-Radio editor.) By Robert Bianco The Pittsburgh Press The KDKA cost-cutting moves that led to the cancellation of "Pittsburgh 2Day" also have led to a major structural reorganization at the station, reducing the number of departments from seven to five and realigning several job titles. KDKA's sales and marketing department have been combined into one, with sales head Hal Whack resigning.

Also combined are the comptroller and human resources departments. In the wake of the realignment, Program Director Jayne Adair has gained a new title director of program strategy. She will be in charge of the station's research; strategic planning; special projects, including baseball and the Pittsburgh Marathon; and syndicated programming. Her job, she says, is to "focus more on longer-term planning than day-to-day operations." In one of the oddities of the arrangement, her job will no longer include supervision of the station's local programming, except for "Evening Magazine." She already has a job to do on Arthur Greenwald, "Evening" producer and KDKA creative services director, has resigned. Greenwald could not be reached for comment.

and photographers of the paper. Although Orange County is roughly the same market size as Pittsburgh, there is no local station because Los Angeles stations own all the television licenses. Tiven said the new cable station will provide the missing local coverage. And local it will be. "The intent," Tiven said, "is not to do something that passes for CNN or CNN Headline News." As for WQEX, Tiven said the search is just beginning for his replacement He hopes to see an in-house appointment.

"There is a substantial number of people in the building who can do this job. It's more a question of who, not if." Tiven spent about a decade in Pittsburgh, working here first as news director at WPXI from 1980 to 1984. He then spent a year at WQED-TV before accepting a job on NBC's ill-fated news show "American Almanac." Then it was on to WQEX. He expects his last day to be Feb. 6.

"I'll miss it." (Allan Walton is entertainment editor of The Pittsburgh Press.) By Allan Walton The Pittsburgh Press Kenneth Tiven says he was perfectly content in his job as station manager at WQEX-TV, the station he helped create in 1986. Then came a call from California. And now, Tiven is announcing his resignation at WQEX. Sometime next month he'll assume duties as vice president and general manager of a new 24-hour cable news organization called Orange County Cable News. "This project is about the only thing that meets the requirements to dislodge me from here," Tiven said yesterday.

"It fills a missing link." Which is? "A total absence of local news. This will be the first time in the history of television that someone is going to do news for a specific area and actually have the resources to do it as television journalism." The resources are being provided by Freedom Newspapers, the chain that owns the Orange County Register. Tiven will design and manage the new station OCCN in conjunction with Arthur Greenwald "Evening" producer resigns KDKA's remaining local programs, such as "Let's Read a Story," have been moved over to the news department and the supervision of News Director Sue Mclnerney. Jan Getz, who had been doing "Story" and the canceled "2Day" for the programming department, has a new title project management director and will report to Mclnerney or marketing director Bruce Kaplan, depending on the project. Kenneth Tiven Leaving next month The Register, located about 45 miles south of Los Angeles.
